As of 12/12/18--not counting the Baylor game today:
Horns among the league leaders--ranking and per game average. Most noticeable to me is the lack of Texas players among the FT% leaders:

    SCORING
    20. White, Jatarie-11.7
    25. Sutton, Sug-10.2

    FIELD GOAL PCT
    5. White, Jatarie-.575

    FREE THROW PCT
    None in top 15

    3-POINT FG PCT
    11. Williams, Danni-.347

    3-POINT FG MADE
    9. Carleton, Bridget-ISU-1.9
    Williams, Danni-UT-1.9

    REBOUNDING
    20. Sutton, Sug-5.9

    OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS
    15. Underwood, Jada-2.2

    DEFENSIVE REBOUNDS
    15. Sutton, Sug-4.6

    ASSISTS
    4. Sutton, Sug-6.1

    ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO
    10. Sutton, Sug-1.9

    STEALS
    None in top 15

    BLOCKED SHOTS
    None in the top 15

    MINUTES PLAYED
    16. Williams, Danni-30.6
    20. Sutton, Sug-30.0

The fact that Sug is the leading rebounder on the team is an example of what I was talking about in another thread regarding Joyner. She makes the team better without even having to score because of the fact that she’s the best rebounder and the most versatile post player defensively on the team.

After watching our game versus UTRGV I’m struck again that our current woes are more mental than physical. I’m not blaming the players here, just would like to see them rise above the things that may be holding them back.

During the Oregon vs Miss State game telecast, the announcers brought up a man named Brett Ledbetter, who is working with Sabrina Ionescu as a “thinking partner,” to help her elevate her teammates. I looked him up online, listened to one of his Ted Talks on YouTube, and located his website, whatdriveswinning.com. He’s worked with some big time players and programs. I wish Texas WBB, and perhaps even the Texas Athletics department in general would consider turning to him to help get us over some of the proverbial humps we seem to face on a recurring basis.

The proverbial humps are definitely mental... as in lack of savvy coaching. I only hope CDC wastes no time addressing this... there was an Elite 8 appearance three years ago followed by two Sweet Sixteen appearances the past two seasons... should we fall anywhere short of the Sweet Sixteen this year, then that proves a trending decline IMO.

Hopefully CDC cares more about women's athletics and won't sit back like Dodds and let our program be driven totally back into the crapper, as it's not easy to recover from that.

And for anyone satisfied with perennial Sweet Sixteen appearances, that is NOT much of an accomplishment when you have played two lower-ranked teams on your home floor and won. It's nothing to brag about at $1M a year... with NO Big 12 regular season or tournament championships to boot.

I sure hope we don't lose any other of our top recruits to transfer... you can't sit players of high caliber and expect them to be content with limited playing time while they learn... Not when the product on the floor in front of them looks the way ours has.

Brnkj--I'm fond of you but you clearly have an axe to grind with Aston. By your standards, one of your favorite coaches, Sherri Coale, should have gotten the axe years ago. This season, she's 3-7, last season, she finished 16-15. In the past 5 years, her highest finish in the Conference is 2nd, she's placed 3rd twice and has a 4th and a 6th place finish. In the past five years of the NCAA tourney, she's been booted out of the first round twice and has lost in the second round three times. Clearly unacceptable by your standards.

I can understand if fans are frustrated or concerned but I find it amusing and hypocritical to throw praises towards Sherri Coale as a coach but call for Karen Aston's ouster when her record is better than Coale's.

The point you're missing is that Coale has not had NEAR the talent Aston has... But she managed to find a way to defeat us at least once each and every season until last year. Besides the issue is what we're not doing without regard to what's going on elsewhere. However a little food for thought what do you think Coale, Fennelly, Mitte, or practically every other coach in the conference could do with the talent on our roster???

I have no axe to grind with Karen personally... How could I when I don't know her? But I do have an issue with the fact that she DOES NOT HAVE WHAT IT TAKES to develop HS All-Americans into NCAA All-Americans nor is she capable of developing a roster full of them into anything more than a mediocre Sweet 16 finish... Not to mention she can't beat Baylor.. not even when she's got more HS All-Americans on her roster than Baylor has players. Remember last year's SWEEP?

Please don't think I'm fighting with you @LutherIsMyDog because I'm very fond of you as well... But results (or lack thereof) don't lie. The way we're going we could very likely see ourselves hovering around a .500 conference record this year.

I can understand your POV but why isn't Coale gettng better recruits? OU has just as many resources and the same prestige as Texas. Why do her teams lose to teams of lesser talent? For example, WVU is stacked with talent and it's harder to recruit to WVU than OU.

Aston is at the point in her career that she needs to prove she can elevate the program to finish consistently with teams in the higher echelon. I want Texas to be a team that's in the conversation each year for the best team in the nation. Aston's proven she can rebuild a program but she needs to prove that she can take it to the elite level.

As much as I like this year's team, I'm prepared for more games like we've seen the past two weeks. I'm prepared for our record to be worse than it has been the last three years. With that said, my expectations for next season will be much higher and that's when I'll be a more critical fan. For now, I'm going to try to enjoy the season and hopefully watch this team grow as the season progresses.

I find conversations such as this healthy as long as we are all civil to one another. I can certainly learn a lot from other people's perspective. In the end, all of us on this forum (with a few exceptions ;)) want Tx WBB to be a prominent program.

Great conversation between brnkj and LIMD. I agree with brnkj on a lot of things (e.g., the need for motion in the offense, the need to change up defenses), but sometimes find his vitriol a bit much. Sheri Coale is an excellent coach, but, as LIMD points out, she has had some very non-stellar seasons. Brnkj seems to feel that we have clearly superior talent and that it's Karen's fault that we haven't had better results. I don't necessarily agree that we have superior talent, certainly this year anyway. We have had some highly ranked recruits, but the proof is when they get on the basketball court. I think rankings of recruits are pretty flawed. For example, as much as I like Joyner, I think she was overranked as a recruit because of her shooting problems. I don't know that Karen can do anything about that. I'm sure they must have worked on her shooting mechanics a great deal. As much hope as I had for Chaz Patterson, I believe she was overranked, too. (higher than Chennedy Carter and Morris of Baylor). Last year, Chaz looked lost and out of control on the court. I had high hopes for this year, but she left before we could tell. I don't even know OU's players this year, but Pellington is a spectacular guard, especially on the drive. Llanusa, who I believe is injured this year, had a great shooting touch. Their post from last year (can't think of her name and don't have time to look it up) was also a super player. We all definitely want the same thing, to get to the sweet sixteen and beyond, but we have a lot of challenges this year. Lashann going down hurt us bad, also Sedona. I'm hoping for a good season, but don't know what to expect in Big 12 play.

Bingo. Texas, under Aston, is the school that attracts great talent but rarely truly develops it. Texas consistently loses games it should win (e.g. last two season-ending losses). Those NCAA tourney teams were NOT better than our team. Their coaches were better than our coach. Period. They won with less. Face it, Texas is where great players go to die. And don't scream, "But what about Ariel and Brooke"? Those players were shades of who they should've been at Texas -- and it's not because they didn't work hard.

Truly elite players and parents know that Texas is in a decline -- and they don't want to come here. Winning against big time teams is hard for any team, but Texas has blown the chances it had to separate itself from the pack - blowing at least 2-3 opportunities to get past Elite 8.

In fact, Texas should have gotten to the Final Four in 2017 -- team was good enough to get there. But Aston craters in the crunch time -- and then makes excuses in press conferences for any and ALL of her shortcomings. "We ran into a team that was hot?" -- the quote after the Stanford loss. No we didn't. We ran into a team with a coach who doesn't just sit there when it matters most. Aston cannot coach -- she was just the obvious choice at the time of hiring. Yes she can teach defense - blah - blah - but she CANNOT maneuver the highs and lows of a big time game. Hell, it's been 7 years and she still hasn't addressed the obvious offensive issues. That's a coach that DOESN'T get it. Unfortunately, Texas is known for hanging on to coaches longer than it should. Maybe this new AD won't continue THAT tradition because it's ludicrous what's happening to the program. Won't be easy to recover from this decline if it doesn't get turned around. And conference around the corner? Geez.

I agree and disagree. The UCLA team of last year was a very good team with 2 WNBA players as starters on that roster. But I do agree that Coach Aston hasn’t done a good job overall of getting the most out of the talent she’s had for the most part. But I would also agree with the the poster that said some of that talent has been a little overrated. I would also take a wait and see approach in terms of saying whether or not the program is in the decline.

The 2020 recruiting class will say whether or not the program is in the decline and whether or not recruits have confidence/ belief in Karen as a Coach. And I’ve been as critical of Karen as anyone but you’re kidding yourself if you think the AD is going to fire her. As I’ve stated numerous times, I just want Coach Aston to evolve and improve as a Coach on offense and defense. And if she can’t she needs to bring in an assistant that can.

Not sure how you expect us to reach Sweet 16 after losing Lashann and Chaz...plus no Sedona..it MIGHT happen, but we are young and, well, challenged! :hookem:

I expect us to make the Sweet 16 the same way all the other elite programs do. Notre Dame lost FOUR players to ACL injuries last year yet won a National Championship. Muffet McGraw made the necessary adjustments necessary to facilitate that type of success. Mississippi State lost FOUR starters to graduation last year, all except McCowan, yet is ranked #7 in the AP with only one loss to a very good Oregon team on the road. Maybe you should go tell Vic Schaefer he can't win because he has too many young or inexperienced players. You continue to win through player development, having a solid system in place, coaching and adjustments. Last year Baylor was down to only 8 healthy players yet won both the regular and post season Big 12 Championship. We should make the Sweet 16 this year. It's not like we don't have the talent!!!!

Hornzupp's post is an extreme example of blaming everything on the coach. Kurupt's reply got it just right. I reiterate, the fact is that our talent, especially this year, is probably not superior to several other teams in the Big 12 (including OU). Lashann out, Sedona out, Joyner just getting back, playing mostly players who were NOT all-Americans and way down in the rankings list (Allen-Taylor, Warren, Underwood). I think they're doing a good job, though they aren't absolute blow-out talents. I'm really liking Destiny's skills, but she wasn't real highly ranked and has some quickness issues. So I plan to enjoy the year and hope we play to our best potential (Ooops. I think that's Beto's line). I emphatically disagree that Brooke and Arial would have been better somewhere else. They were real talents and played great for us, as they would have anywhere.

As I look around at all the Big 12 team's.
    All team's have improved.
This is going to be the year.
    K. Aston will really have to show her coaching skill's.
From what I have seen out of Texas this year so far.
We might be at the bottom of the Conference this year.
A lot will depend on what she does as a Coach.

I'll tell you how I expect us to reach the Sweet 16...
    Jatarie White Sr HS All-American
    Joyner Holmes Jr HS Al-American
    Sug Sutton Jr HS All-American
    Destiny Littleton So HS All-American
    Charli Collier Fr HS All-American
and the rest of the talent on the roster.

But look at the games we've struggled to win against teams with NOT NEAR AS MUCH talent. Look how Mississippi State kicked us with NOT NEAR AS MUCH. Watch how many more we struggle against and might lose to with NOT NEAR AS MUCH. What those teams do have that we are sorely lacking is great coaching. KA is probably the weakest in the conference. I only say "probably" because I haven't seen Tech play yet. But all the rest are stronger with the X's and O's for sure.

Interesting. Pomeroy sounds right, at least for players who have a pretty good three. E.g., at this point, I wouldn't want Joyner (not to pick on her) to take every open three. I do think it matters if anyone is near the basket who might pick up a rebound on a miss.

I was thinking more about our guards, not our post players who haven't shown that they can hit the 3, especially Joyner. Although I do admit she has taken her shots late in the game when it's not going to impact winning the game.
