Both #12/12 Texas (7-2) and NR/NR Stetson (1-7) are coming off losses to #9 Tennessee. Stetson lost 65-55 on Dec. 05 to the Lady Vols. Texas suffered an 88-82 loss to Tennessee on Sunday, Dec. 09 to run their losing streak to two games. The Hatters have not played since that loss to Tennessee. This marks Coach Aston’s third try to get win #150 at Texas.

Stetson and Texas played for the first time last season on Nov. 12, 2017 with the Horns overwhelming the Hatters 95-59 in Austin. Texas will be seeking to break their two game losing streak this season on Sunday while Stetson looks to even the series between the two teams at one win each. Against Stetson, Tennessee was 25 of 30 from the FT line, including 22 of 24 in the second half. Against the Horns, the Lady Vols were 24-32 overall and 17 of 25 from the FT line. Putting the Lady Vols on the FT line hurt both teams in their games versus Tennessee, especially since Texas was 19-24 while Stetson was only 4-4 with all four FTs coming in the first half.

    Stetson Hatters (1-7):
The Hatters average 56.8 ppg and are led by a trio of players averaging in double digits: Sarah Sagerer (#1, 6-3 RS Sr. F) coming in at 13.7 ppg, McKenna Beach (#2, 5-6 Sr. G) with an average of 11.8 ppg and Addi Walters (#11, 5-9 Jr. G) at 11.6 ppg. Those three account for 37.1 of the team’s 56.8 ppg or 65.3% of the scoring. That trio individually has taken 20 plus more shots than the next closest teammate. Walters is the most accurate of the three at 44.6% from the field (33-74). Beach has the most attempts with 92 (made 28; 30.4%). Sagerer has made the most FGs (39-90) on 43.3% from the field. That trio is joined by Bianca Fizouaty (#3, 5-9 Fr. G), Jon'Nita Henry (#14, 5-6 Jr. G) and Kendall Lentz (#35, 5-11 Soph. F) in putting up double digit 3pt attempts. Mackenzie Davis (#21, 5-7 Fr. G) actually has the best percentage from BTA, hitting 44.4% on 4 of 9 treys. Walters 19 of 49 treys (38.8%) leads the Hatters in 3pts made and attempted. Fizquaty is second in both categories with 11 of 36 (30.6%). Stetson doesn’t get to the FT line much as evident by their average of 11.8 FTs per game. Beach has taken 38% of the team’s FT attempts (29-36; 80.6%). Next is Sagerer who has connected on 11 of 16 FTs (68.8%). Megan Vincent (#23, 6-4 Soph. F) at 83.3% (5-6) and Walters (8-8; 100%) are the other two Hatters hitting over 70%.

Sagerer (7.6 rpg) and Vincent (6.4 rpg) lead the team in rebounding. Beach at 4.3 rpg and Henry with 3.1 rpg provide additional help on the boards. Beach is the top distributor with 28 assists. Posts Sagerer and Vincent do an excellent job passing the ball as they have 15 and 20 assists, repectively. Sagerer and Vincent have combined for 32 of the team’s 34 blocks with 16 blocks each. Beach has 17 steals while Fizquaty and Davis each has swiped nine.

The Hatters have 12 players listed on the roster. Day'Neshia Banks (#00, 5-10 Soph. F) and Jordan Cloutier (#10, 5-7 Fr. G) have yet to play this season. Kennedi Colclough (#24, 6-0 Jr. F), coming off a season ending injury last season, played in the first game this season and has not seen action since. She was a starter last season for the first 17 games until her injury, averaging 13.0 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Rosalee Nicholson (#34, 5-6 Fr. G) has played in two games, the first one of the season and the seventh. She averaged 5.0 mpg.

That leaves eight players in the rotation. All have at least three starts to date. Beach and Vincent has eight starts each. Joining them as starters versus Tennessee were Henry, Walters and Sagerer. Vincent (6-4) and Sagerer (6-3) give Stetson good height in the post but the next tallest player in the rotation is 5-11 Lentz. Talk about being thin inside.

    TEXAS LONGHORNS (7-1):
The Longhorns bring two double digit scorers to this game: Jatarie (11.7 ppg) and Sug (10.2 ppg). Danni (9.3 ppg), Audrey (8.9 rpg) and Destiny (8.8 ppg) are moving closer to reaching double digits. Olamide continues to lead in FG% at 59.1% (13-22). Jatarie (46-80; 55.8%) and Jada (21-39; 53.8%) are the other Horns hitting over 50% from the field. Danni (29-89; 32.6%) and Sug (38-84; 45.2%) join Jatarie as the players having taken at least 80 shot attempts. Texas has four primary 3pt shooters. Danni has been the most effective, hitting 34.7% (17-49). Destiny (10-36; 27.8%), Sug (6-22; 27.3%) and Audrey (5-22; 22.7%) continue to be streaky with Audrey (2-3), Destiny (2-5) and Danni (3-8) having good games shooting from BTA against Tennessee. Eight players are averaging at least one FT attempt per game. Audrey’s 15-20 (75.0%) leads the team in FTs made and attempted. Jatarie (13-19; 68.4%), Sug (10-19; 52.6%) and Charli (12-17; 70.6%) are the next three in FT attempts. Danni at 81.8% (9-11), joins Audrey and Charli in being the three players making over 70% from the FT line.

Sug continues to lead the team in rebounding at 5.9 rpg. Jatarie comes in second at 5.1 rpg. Destiny, Audrey, Danni and Jada all average between 4.0 and 4.3 rpg as they provide strong support on the boards. Sug is the leader in distributing the ball with 55 assists. Four players have between 10 and 12 assists each. Charli has nine blocks while Jatarie has five and Olamide four blocks. The three top ballhawks for the Horns are Sug with 10 steals, Audrey with nine and Jada with eight.

Available players for Texas have increased from nine to ten with the return of Joyner. Depth in the post has also gone up a bit. The starters probably won’t change for a while. The starting five of Sug, Danni, Jada, Jatarie and Audrey should remain intact through December at least, if not longer. Every player is averaging at least 10 mpg with Sug (30.0 mpg) and Danni (30.6 mpg) leading the way. Jatarie, Audrey, Destiny and Jada are averaging 20 plus mpg.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.
    Screenshot (57).png

Even without Joyner, Texas has an advantage inside, not so much in height as in numbers. Add Joyner and that advantage increases significantly. Danni has taken on the best shooter in the last few games and she figures to get first crack at either Beach or Walters with Audrey picking up the one Danni doesn’t. Sagerer and Vincent, as long as they stay out of foul trouble, will present the Horns with a tough problem inside. Stetson will have to account for Sug and Joyner when she is in. Those should be tough matchups for the Hatters.

Stetson’s zone gave Tennessee fits. I expect to see zone from the Hatters from the start. Texas has the players to break down the zone by driving inside or by hitting the three. Although that second option is going to depend on whether our guards are hitting their shots from BTA. They are getting better but their season percentages make the zone a good bet for opponents. Texas has a chance to make a killing on the offensive boards off second chance points. For all their height inside, the Hatters are not doing a good job keeping opponents from getting offensive rebounds.

One thing Texas will need to watch is the 3pt line. Stetson averages almost one shot in four from BTA. They may take more than that in this game, especially after seeing how successful Tennessee was. Davis and Walters especially will need to be forced to take contested 3pters.

Not sure if Texas will get another 50 point win against Stetson, but it should be a strong win for the Horns as they break their two game losing streak.

Game time is 1 PM CST on Sunday. This will be the fourth game in a row that Texas has played early in the day (between 11 AM and 1 PM). The game will be televised on the LHN and carried by radio station 105.3 FM.

Both Texas and Stetson had a player receive a weekly honor after playing Tennessee.

Starting sooner than I expected but I expected it to happen by conference play.

Excited to see the move. Jada will continue to get plenty of minutes at both PF & SF.

    Time to watch the game!

Can’t make shots against the zone. And Texas needs to use more pass fakes.

We continue to struggle against a zone. Every team will now be bringing that. Let’s get on that and shut it down now.

Very sloppy and bad game by Texas they don’t value the basketball at all. They take horrible shots and they probably have the worst basketball IQ of any team in the country. Also, how about teaching your players how to use a pass fake Coach Aston?

And although Stetson isn’t a very good team they at least look well coached which is more than you can say about Texas. And did I mention that this team has horrible basketball IQ.

Texas kept trying to force the ball inside when it was obvious that Stetson was sagging into the paint because they can’t hit the broadside of a barn from the perimeter. Losing Chaz continues to be huge because of her ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter. And teams are going to continue to play zone against Texas because of it. Coach Aston also needs to snap out of it and run a better offense against the zone.

Missed the game and only saw the boxscore, but JFC, 26 TOs? 3-21 from 3? Clearly we don't have an effective zone offense...

I was really shocked at how bad the Texas offense was. Any Big 12 team would have blown us out by the end of the first half.

The number of unforced turnovers off of foolish passes was astonishing. Many of them came from trying to force it into a zone so compact and tight it was like Stetson was lining up in a phalanx in front of the basket.

Love the doom and gloomers. Wouldn't be the same without them. :lmao:Really seems like some want Karen gone. Reading the same things said about Jody and Gail when people wanted a change. SMH.

Nice win against a solid team. Joyner had a good game, didn't dominate but played well, better than last game, which is what one wants. Charli had a very good game. She and Joyner had a few nice plays together with Joyner finding Charli for easy layups.

Horns' 3pt shooting was atrocious in this game, 3-21, well below what Texas usually hits. Going in, Horns knew that Stetson would play a collapsing zone, similar to what Stanford used against Baylor yesterday. But our bigs were more productive, even if they did struggle.

I like the rotation right now of Jatarie, Joyner, Olamide and Charlie in the post. Those four accounted for 28 pts and 21 pts. Horns did a nice job at the FT line, going 12-15 while keeping Stetson to only nine attempts.

Lots of TOs. 26 for Texas, 23 for Stetson. Not a smooth and pretty game at all. Horns did pick it up nicely in the second half, shooting 56% from the field and 40% from BTA.

Overall, a good win providing Coach Aston with her 150th win at Texas. :hookem2:

Two more games til conference games begin.

Safe travels to those traveling for the holidays.

No one wants Karen gone, all some of us want is for her to improve and be better as a coach just like she asks of the players. And it all starts with making good decisions and having good basketball IQ. And holding players accountable when they don’t. It’s been 7 years now and Texas still doesn’t know how to effectively attack a zone. Nor do they run an offense that can score against it.

They still take horrible shots and make the same bad decisions that they made in year 1. And how many times are they going to try to force the ball inside against a compact zone? Or try to make a post entry pass to a player standing a foot in front of them?

It isn't rocket science. We have a coach and players that continue to do the same thing over and over again an expect a different result. How in the hell does any team have 26 turnovers? I've never seen a dumber group of players. Stetson a solid team. What a joke. You mean the team that lost to Tulsa, Hofstra, Wrong State, Marist? Well, they did beat Webber International, the pinnacle of women's basketball success, I guess you can give them that.

We definitely had a bad game, but we beat Stetson more than Tennessee did. The obvious problems were turnovers and shooting. I don't think we'll be this bad often. The bright spots were Charli (free throws esp.), Joyner's outside shots. I like the way Destiny drives to the basket. She really is strong there. Warren always plays steady. Today might have had a different outcome if Stetson had gotten more rebounds. Much work to do.

Agree. Always interesting when fans can stomach when a coach blames players but can't quite wrap their brains around the concept of a coach needing to improve. It's not too much to ask. At Texas it's expected. Yes glad we won but this team will get buh-lown out in the Big 12 if they don't execute better.

Blaming the coach is a time-honored human instinct when teams lose. I'm not saying Karen doesn't have room to improve. I certainly don't agree with all her decisions and have disagreed with her many times on this board. But it's easy to overdo it. We can't blame her for injuries or for cold, cold shooting or for every unforced turnover. Sometimes teams don't have the right personnel. Sometimes they have an off night.

I would agree with the shooting but unforced/not very good basketball decisions and low basketball IQ have become a staple of Coach Aston teams since she’s been here.

My interpretation of the various comments of the low basketball IQ of the players, Coach Aston's unwillingness to change, though we have seen that willingness over time and even moreso, this year, is that they are of similar vein as the ones harping on Jody and Gail preceding the coaching changes. That's my interpretation and only my upon reading various posts. Constructive criticism is different from ripping someone down, however couched the language

Look at the various defenses used in this game, man to man, zone, press. Look at the success they had attacking the Stetson zone in the second half. Were there TOs? Absolutely, almost twice what they had been averaging coming into this game. Is that acceptable? No. But is that the norm? No, it's not. But some jump on that first half of shooting and this huge amount of TOs in this game and extrapolate that this team has low Basketball IQ and a coach who is unwilling to change.

It's a game with ups and downs, same as the season. The criticism of Coach Aston dates back at least two years and it has started to creep towards the players recently. All this about a team that is 8-2 and ranked #12. Hopefully, the staff and players know who to listen to and are willing to put in the time and effort needed to reach their goals, especially since we as fans don't put in any work towards reaching those team goals.

    Same old :e-poo:for seven seasons...
    1-No movement on offense
2-Unprepared to execute against a zone defense
    3-Turnovers
4-Revolving door at the scorers table
5-Players look confused and without confidence
    6-Etc, etc...

All signs of a team not well-coached

Although I can understand the frustration, I still believe this is a rebuilding year. We lost two, four-year starters with the graduation of Ariel and Brooke. We lost Joyner to injury in August and Lashann to injury in November. The only two players currently starting that saw significant minutes for Texas last season are Jatarie and Sug. Last season, the other players were in high school, playing for an SEC team or were on the bench. I expect that our performance will be up and down as this group learns to play together. If they show improvement one week, the next week they may look totally out of sorts.

Some may not like my prediction but I'm preparing for us to finish 3rd or 4th in the conference. Anything above that is overachieving in my mind. My only expectation is to see vast improvement for this team by the end of the season.

I'll reserve my angst and criticism for next season when my expectations will ratchet up as I predict we'll be a very, very good team if Lashann returns and we have Joyner and Sedona back at full strength.

While I agree with a lot of what you stated and I also stated before the season started the loss of Brooke and Ariel hurt worse than expected there's still a number of things you have to keep in mind. First, we didn't lose Chasity due to injury and she's the one player that could have opened up the inside. Even McCowen can't score with 4 players draped all over her.

Second, most of the turnovers are coming from the upper class players. They are not being coached on how to take care of the ball. The clueless look on some of their faces reminds me of Charlie Strong. I do agree we may finish 3-4 in the league and it going to be ugly against Baylor, even though it looks like they could be down a bit themselves.

@LutherIsMyDog I always appreciate your opinion, and while you make some great observations, I feel at the end of the day we make far too many excuses for our mediocrity stemming from an inept and dated coaching style. Great read here about our NCAA 2nd round opponent from a couple of years ago... It's an example of what great coaching can do in spite of graduation and a lack of a roster full of HS All-American players:

Coach Aston knows the coach of NC State well. And ironically he runs a 4 out 1 in just like Karen. But his teams value the basketball and play with good basketball IQ. I’m not saying that Karen has to be Geno, Tara, or Bobby Knight, but the offense is just too predictable and continues to struggle against zones.

Even teams that could score well like last years team struggled against the zone UCLA used. Coach Aston has done a tremendous job of making Texas a Top 15 program but she either needs to improve as a coach individually in terms of X’s and O’s offensively or bring in an assistant that can.

IMO Karen has allowed this program to create too many bad habits. Even when Texas was throwing the ball all over the place in the last minutes of the game yesterday I was hoping that Karen would call a timeout to let them know that not valuing the basketball and creating bad habits was unacceptable. But unfortunately it looked as if she was in a daze the entire game.

Kurupt--Although I don't always 100% agree with your points of view, I certainly appreciate the details in your response. I can tell that you possess knowledge about "x's and o's" that I sometimes lack.

I'm in total agreement with you on the points you make in your post regarding finding an offensive scheme to employ against the zone defense. You've been beating the drum about this issue for the past two seasons (at least) and I was hopeful that some new wrinkle would be added to our game plan the year.

I also agree with your about Aston correcting the bad habits during the game. In fact, I mentioned the same to the group sitting around me that Karen seemed to be sitting and watching as the team was struggling and playing sloppy.

I'm still hopeful that Alan Major will provide an offensive strategy to use against the zone. Alan may have been the inspiration behind our zone defense that we've started using more often this season.

I appreciate the civil debates between most of us as I think we all want success for the Texas program.

What irritates me the most about our offense is the lack of motion. We just stand around without the ball. We don't create sufficient spacing and get in one another's way. All of this allows opponents to sit in a zone and anticipate our next move. It's frustrating and irritating to watch... and it's been pretty much the same way the past seven years regardless of staff or player personnel.

Incorporate a motion offense with some overloads, well--executed skip pass reversals, ball fakes, double picks for a baseline runner... all things that make the zone move out of formation. Then watch that create opportunities to attack the seams, allow shooters to catch and shoot in motion, and sneak behind for some easy buckets. That'll bust that zone up, especially when those shots start falling because shooters (and we still have several good ones) are getting the ball in rhythm.

To your point about Alan Major, I wish we knew more about his role in the team’s administration.

Not that the response would be excusable, but I’m wondering if KA might have been a little stunned by the teams play yesterday? I know I was, in particular after watching the press video released by the department prior to the game. She was quite high on the teams improvements during practices this past week. In case you might have missed that video:
