We landed the #9 class in the country??? McCoy-Shepherd would be nice gets for sure, but for one am pumped about the kids we just signed. Let’s focus and celebrate the kids that are here now, and had no doubts where they wanted to be. Well done coaches!

Or in the case of a certain QB in Athens, the yell can come from another scholarship athlete.

I'd say we miss on big recruits every year. This year we lost out on every 5 star guy we were after assuming Bru ends up at USC as everyone seems to be predicting so it feels like we whiffed a lot.

With that being said it seems to me like TH has a very specific athlete he is after for each position as indicated by so many fewer offers compared to every other top 15 class. I have never seen us land so many high quality athletes from across the country considering the serious competition to land them. Our Texas haul seems to be mixed reviews which normally hurts because I always want to dominate Texas. But that's just my likes and dislikes.

BUT, did he go after all those guys in a big way or did he really get what he wanted to fit his vision for our program while whiffing on a couple big ones? I'm not sure.

It's obvious last year's class made a huge impact this years results and for first time in forever we didn't have to hear how the reason we lost was YOUTH...because we won....a lot.

So I believe as he continues to get the type of players he wants to fit his vision and plan we will continue to see improved results which I believe we will start seeing the super elite recruits he's after start committing.

So is it bad he whiffed on some big guys this year? Yes, but he is only going for what he wants and it will only get better. Heck, we have a top10 class, 9 wins this year while being Sugar Bowl bound. That's a pretty good place to be in year two. We'll see how it goes next year. It sure wasn't fun seeing Jumbo come in and dominate recruiting like he did, but Aggy has had great classes bomb many times before so we'll see.

I've been on my soapbox since this was leaked out of Athens. If the NCAA lets a kid break the rules just because someone in the stands at a game yells. "put the nigger in", then the NCAA needs to be dissolved immediately.

Is it offensive? Absolutely, but I'm sure that's not the first time a 19 year old black kid has been called that. It doesn't matter if the offender was a varsity baseball player or some drunk that was given a ticket to attend the game. The kid and his family are using that incident to break NCAA rules to transfer when in reality the truth is the kid is second string and couldn't beat out the starter.

Excellent post. I agree with Aggy point, but not surprised. He’s the unknown. If he wins next year, it will continue, if not, and I feel it won’t, next years class will not be as kind to Jimbo. Herman is on a good path. Not perfect, and some posters want immediate satisfaction, but a path that will lead to long term success. IMHO

    Depends on the position.

QB - Got who he wanted
    RB - He did not
WR - Yes and no, Whittington and Smith are difference makers, missing on a few more.
OL - Tyler Yes, wiffed on a bunch still not sure about Shepherd.
TE - I'd say Whiff and then got comparable.
    DT - Definite wiff
DE - Down year in state, I'd say he whiffed
LB - Got who he wanted
DB - Whiffed but got comparable

I noticed that sopsher was still available. I think he at one point was considering Texas....man that would be a great pick up at a need position. He would get playing time early. One can dream.

Great points. It isn't just class rank but needs filled. There have been times when we have seen a class filled with highly ranked players (particularly WR) but did not address needs. I think this problem is made worse by loading up in state "to dominate" rather than looking oos to fill needs. Look at OSU, Clemson, PSU and Bama. They seek oos despite easy dominance in state.

Considering last year's recruiting haul plus this years it makes for a strong team. But I think we are going to do well on the offensive line in 2020 an we'll be an even greater force to contend with in the near future.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to have been in the Texas war room? We really don’t know if TH and staff got who they wanted (for the most part), and we may never. While I tend to agree with Austin Bill’s assessment, the staff’s criteria and measurables could differ from those of the rating services. As my Longhorn buddy pointed out, look what Patterson and Grundy do every year with much lower rated classes, or so it seems.

I like the trajectory of recruiting, and the program itself. Unless we take a step backwards in 2019, I expect for us to be in the CFP conversation, and for Ehlinger to be invited to NYC next December.

Sure, but The Republic has 2-3 times as many recruits as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Alabama, & South Carolina combined. They go out of state out of necessity; we don't need to do that. Keep focusing out of state, and it's going to bite Herman in the *** big time.

I think Herman is doing the right thing by going after anybody no matter where they are located. I wish that we would go after more five stars no matter where they are at. You never know when one of them might be interested plus we know playing in Austin is a nice place to play. At the same time we need to keep on hitting Texas hard and especially go up North without forgetting the Houston area.

Duke I thought the same thing, Patterson, Gundy, but think about the Pirate, and Holgerson as well.

Yep, and just look at how many of those "errbody" DT's never played a down at UT. I think this staff looks at a lot other factors than simply talent, which is the ONLY thing the star rating considers.
With the heavy losses we will take to graduation on both sides of the ball, we may have to hit the pause button on advancement. Yes I know a lot of the senior talent we are losing was not necessarily top notch, but we will nevertheless have a lot of holes to fill.

I'm also all for the 5s and 4s coming here no matter where they're from. "They" say that when you get 4 or 500 miles from home with a recruit, it creates problems. Maybe the world is "shrinking" and the 18 year olds don't weep for mama when they're 2000 miles away like they "used to do?"

Yeah that was that wonderful signing day festivus miracle It was a Sunday .. And we sat about 20th, but Charlie was feeling it He'd been building relationships. Shaking hands, kissing babies .. The vibe was definitely there And then they started dropping like flies... This guy, that guy... Errbody. That was a good week.

His 'errbody' and lack of development cost him his job or maybe he just couldn't evaluate players very well!! Maybe he was in way over his head in several areas of coaching!

Agree with Sabre, reaching oos so hard may be costly and end up biting. There is an abundance of 4 / 5 talent in Texas to build several CFP teams but many programs are cherry picking the state and many players are choosing to leave. Is it because UT has fallen hard in last 10-15 years? What will it take to turn the kids back around to loyalty to the state?

Okay, not to be snarky, but Texas has enough players right now to get to the Sugar Bowl; and about mid-season was doing well enough to have the talking heads suggest Texas right on the outside of the CFP playoff. I'd suggest a little bad luck in the Ehlinger shoulder injury, probably leading to losses to oSu and WVU stopped any further CFP talk.

They're winning better than they had recently, not as good as to be at the expected one day soon level. And not good enough to have a number of those top recruits to be convinced. Yet.

Continue winning at this level, eliminating the Maryland-type black eye games and with a little good luck (instead of the Ehlinger bad luck injury) and they will come.

Or the Reader's Digest version: Win.

I don't think every 5*/4*/3* recruit qualifies academically to play at Texas. Which would explain why we don't appear on every recruit's list of schools.

High school football in the state of Texas is overrated. The fact is that coaches in this state are paid very well to produce winners and kids here get some of the best training in the country. For the most part, kids are maxed out by the end of high school and won't get much better.

Kids in other states don't get the coaching like they do in Texas so they can get much better when they get to the college level. Texas kids don't get better.

Sure the talent might be there there are talented kids here just like in every state, but it's no better than any other state, just more because Texas has a big population. High school coaches would have you believe the best football is played here, and that might be true, but that doesn't mean this is where the best talent is.

Not to be argumentative here, but considering your point, which I understand and agree with a bit, not entirely, but if having an inbred emphasis on prep football in Texas makes those players "look" better than comparably aged players in other states because of the local investments in their programs, then my question is:

Okay, to hone in on your last phrase "....that doesn't mean this is where the best talent its..." I ask, then where is the better talent. And why?

Nebraska during their heyday used partial qualifiers, county scholarships, etc. to do an equivalent, IMHO, thing at the collegiate level, taking maybe not great innate talent, but getting large numbers of bodies, and practice, practice, practice, practice, ... 4+ deep squads, such that ultimately at Jr/Sr levels they'd have starting teams that may not have been (except some skill positions) outstanding position for position, but overall, as teams were very, very good. MNC trophies attest.

Or a parallel for basketball begs the question. Texas (state) seemed to suffer until the past 40 years or so in competing nationally as a source of prep stars to go and excel at the next level. Did Texas just have a bunch of short, fat, slow guys compared to the northern states? Or does the temperate climate allow prep-aged kids to still be running around in the vacant lots playing pickup flag football games rather than needing to find a gym to get out of the ice and snow where basketball skills are honed?

So, just curious, not being argumentative about your point of Texas being overrated in football prep talent due to "system investment" by the population that hones the natural talent here, where is the better talent, and why? And do the numbers support that, say by Jr/Sr levels in college and/or NFL success?
