#11/11 Texas will be looking to extend the longest winning streak in the series against NR/NR Kansas State. The Horns currently own a seven game winning streak starting with the Feb. 18, 2015 game played in Austin. Texas holds a 22-14 overall edge in games between the two and a 16-11 edge in Big 12 games. Texas will be seeking its fifth conference win in a row and its eighth straight for the season. The Wildcats are looking to snap a two game season and conference losing streak. This game will also be a chance for KSU to snap a three game home losing streak to the Longhorns.

    Kansas State Wildcats (10-6; 1-3)
The Wildcats’ top three scorers account for 62% for their points. Peyton Williams (#11, 6-4 Jr. F) clocks in at 14.3 ppg. Kayla Goth (#10, 6-1 Sr. G) adds 13.0 ppg. Rachel Ranke (#12, 6-1 Soph. G) pours in 11.0 ppg. Jasauen Beard (#25, 5-10 RS Jr. F), Christianna Carr (#43, 6-1 Fr. G) and Kali Jones (#15, 6-2 Sr. F) add 7.3 ppg, 6.0 ppg and 6.0 ppg, respectively. Carr (9-40; 22.5%), Ranke (16-40; 40%), Williams (21-41; 51.2%) and Goth (19-45; 42.2%) are all averaging at least 10 FG attempts a shot. Beard (9-29; 31%) is the only other Wildcat to have reached double digit FG attempts for KSU. The Wildcats have two players making over 80% of their shots. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Jones (8-9; 88.9%) and Ashely Ray (#33, 6-4 Soph. C; 5-6; 83.3%) don’t take many shots. KSU’s 85 3pters are third in the league. But their 3pt FG% of 27.1% ranks ninth. Ranke (10-27; 37%) is the top 3pt shooter for KSU. Carr is second in 3pt attempts at 5-25; (20%). Goth with 12 3pt attempts is the only other Wildcat to have up double digit treys in league play. She is hitting 16.7% on 2-12 3pters. Williams (13-16; 81.3%) and Goth (12-15; 80%) are the best FT shooters on the KSU team. Beard has made 9 of 13 for 69.2%.

Williams is the only Big 12 player averaging a double double in league play at 14.3 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Beard at 3.8 rpg and Goth and Ranke each at 3.0 rpg back up Williams on the boards. Goth tops the league and KSU in assists with her average of 6.3 apg. Ranke (2.3 apg), Carr (1.8 apg) and Williams (1.5 apg) all average over one apg. Goth with 14 TOs and Beard with 11 TOs top KSU in TOs. Three others average at least two TOs per game. Goth (7 steals) and Williams and Ranke with five steals each are the main players to grab a steal for the Wildcats. Williams is the top shot blocker with seven while Ray has four blocks.

KSU has ten active players since Mary Lakes was dismissed from the team after her second arrest in six months and Ayoke Lee (#50, 6-5 Fr. C) and Cymone Goodrich (#2, 5-10 Soph. G) will redshirt this season due to knee and shoulder injuries, respectively. Willilams, Goth, Ranke and Carr have started all four league games. Jones started the first two before being hurt and missing the Baylor game. She played in the Kansas game this past Sunday. Beard has started in her place the last two games. Three players are averaging over 34 mpg for the Wildcats. Willams (34.5 mpg), Goth (37.0 mpg) and Ranke (34.5 mpg) make up the trio. Carr (26.8 mpg), Beard (20.0 mpg), Laura Macke (#13, 6-2 Fr. F; 11.3 mpg), Ray (10.5 mpg) and Savannah Simmons (#1, 6-1 Fr. G; 5.8 mpg) have played in all four games. Jones has played on three, missing one due to injury and averages 17 mpg. That’s a nine player rotation with Alicia Wiggins (#5, 5-8 Soph. G) has played in two games at 2.5 mpg as the tenth player.

In case you were wondering about Jones’ bald head: Great story about her decision to go bald. A bit long but well worth the read.

    Texas Longhorns (14-2; 4-0)
Sug is averaging 16.0 ppg through four Big 12 games. Second among Texas players is Danni at 11.8 ppg. Two players come in at 9.8 ppg: Joyner and Destiny. The Horns are balanced in their shooting with five players having taken between 34 and 44 shots. Sug tops the quintet of her, Danni, Joyner, Destiny and Jatarie, with 11 shots a game with a FGT of 59.1%. Audrey, with a FG% of 66.7%, has the best FG% on the team. She has made 7 of 11 shots. Besides Sug, no other Horn is making more than Charli’s 44.4% from the field (4-9). Danni (9-19; 47.4%) and Destiny (5-15; 33.3%) are the two main shooters from BTA for Texas. Audrey (2-3; 66.7%) and Sug (4-8; 50%) are the most accurate from BTA. Texas is second in the league in getting to the FT line in conference games with 72 FT attempts to TCU’s 74. However, the Horns’ 61.1% hardly shows them making the most of those trips to the FT line. Joyner has been the most effective in getting to the FT line but she has the worst FT% at 44.4% on 8 of 18. Sug (8-13; 61.5%), Destiny (10-13; 76.9%) and Jada (6-10; 60%) are the other Horns having made at least ten trips to the FT line in the first four league games. Aside from Jatarie’s 1 of 1 on FTs, Destiny (76.9%) and Charli (5-7; 71.4%) are the top FT shooters going by percentage.

Joyner (8.8 rpg) and Jatarie (6.5 rpg) provide strong rebounding inside. Sug (5.3 rpg), Danni (4.5 rpg) and Olamide (4.5 rpg) help out on the boards. Sug is tied for second in the league in assists with 5.5 apg (22 total). Danni, Joyner and Destiny rank 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively, with six, five and four rebounds. Every Horn has at least one assist in league play. Joyner (19 TOs) and Sug (13 TOs) top the squad in TOs. Jatarie with 9 TOs is third. Joyner, Charli and Jada each has two blocks for account for six of the seven blocks Texas has registered in Big 12 play. Joyner with 8 steals and Jada with 6 steals are the top ballhawks on the squad.

Texas has the same starting lineup in all four league games: Sug, Danni, Destiny, Joyner and Olamide. Eight of the ten active players have seen action in all four Big 12 games. Charli and Joanne have played in three of the four. Danni (35.5 mpg) and Sug (33.8 mpg) are logging the most minutes per game. Destiny (27.5 mpg), Joyner (24.5 mpg) and Jatarie (20.5 mpg) are in the next tier. Jada (18.3 mpg), Olamide (15.8 mpg) and Audrey (14.3 mpg) are in the teens while Charli (8.7 mpg) and Joanne (4.7 mpg) are seeing action. Charli should start seeing more minutes as league play continues. A technical error kept her from getting more that three minutes versus Iowa State this past Saturday. Joanne is likely to continue to find her minutes limited by the play of Sug and Danni.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.

Another tall backcourt for Texas to deal with. But the big problem will be Williams and Jones (as she continues to recover from her injury) inside. Jones particularly is a strong defender who is likely to take on Joyner. Williams will be a difficult defensive assignment for the Longhorns. I would expect Olamide would start on Williams with Joyner switching off at time. I am curious if Charli will draw that defensive assignment as she has the height and quickness to stay with Williams on the perimeter. KSU is thin upfront with Williams, Ray (6-4) and Jones (6-2) the only post players on their roster. KSU is redshirting one 6-5 Fr. C and dismissed 6-4 C Mary Lakes a week ago. KSU does have a number of 6-1 guards that are likely to have to play at least a few minutes inside. Horns will be to throw four 6-3 and taller players at the Wildcats inside.

KSU will have problems with containing Sug if she continues to play as she has recently. At least one of Danni or Destiny, if not both, should be able give KSU problems from BTA. And, while neither Sug nor Audrey shoot a lot from BTA, they are quite capable of hitting if left open. Ranke and Carr are the players that Texas will be looking to blanket at the 3pt line. Defensively, I would expect Danni to draw Ranke while Sug takes on Goth.

    Screenshot (83).png Screenshot (84).png Screenshot (85).png Screenshot (86).png

Texas and KSU play contrasting styles. Texas will run while KSU is more of a half court team. Still, the Wildcats don’t turn down a chance to run if it’s available. Texas’ penchant for committing TOs will give KSU some opportunities to do so. Texas should dominate on the boards and second chance points should favor the Longhorns. KSU is better at blocking shots than Texas is, so Texas guards will need to be strong finishing or pull up for the short jumper. The good thing is that all of the guards have very good pull up jumpers, if required.

Game time will be at 7 PM this coming Wednesday. The game will be in Manhattan, Kansas. It will not be televised but will be carried online by ESPN3. Link: #11 Texas vs. Kansas State (W Basketball)
Radio station 105.3 FM will carry the radio broadcast. Ticket prices will range from $5-$12. Looks like there will be quite a number of tickets available. The link: https://ev12.evenue.net/cgi-bin/nco...B18:W12:&linkID=kansuse&RSRC=SIDEARM&RDAT=sgl

KSU has been an inconsistent team so far in league play. They blew out OU at home more convincingly than we did. They hung tough at Baylor for the first 3 quarters, I believe. They got blown out at Iowa State, where as we won at ISU. Last game, they lose at home in upset fashion to Kansas.

Coach A said on Game Plan that she expects KSU to fight hard after that disappointing loss to KU. I agree.

    Lets win! :beertoast:

So Aston never plans to address turnovers. Ever? It has only been what, seven years?

This is what a few of us had been concerned about. Four big conference wins in a row, including two on the road. Then KSU at home...might seem like a fairly easy win on paper, but the cats have experienced a few unfortunate losses, and so will be anxious to right the ship (and not get too far out of touch in the Big 12 race). But I still think we're going to get this game moving in the right direction. If we don't see a better 2nd quarter, I'd hate to be in the locker room with Coach A. at the break!!

nice to see Charli in and going up against Williams. She's long enough and quick enough to stay with Williams.

What an embarrassing performance. K-State looked like Baylor. We looked uninspired, uncoached, and like a sloppy mess.

Williams with an O board and a finish at the buzzer.
    Horns just being outworked.

Joyner 2-7 and Jatarie 2-6 from the field. Missing those short layups.

It's a hu-u-uge hole Texas finds itself in.

At least Charli's presence in the paint on D has been disruptive. She got the 3 second call on O but othewise I'd like to see her get more minutes. Her under the basket shot is pretty good--probably better than Joyner's.
