Well, there’s obviously going to be a huge opportunity for Thompson (if he stays), and/or Johnson. That may not be a bad thing.

A true freshman being the only backup is a really bad thing, I don't care how talented he may be.

This SUX!!!! They should just call it like it is.....the “OU Rule”.....The NCAA has allowed them to reinvent this, scrub the rule and capitalize on it!

Universities did not see this transfer portal thing coming (except OU)..... When did ******* free agency start in college????

D it! I was counting on Shane. I am 100% sure he would see time in 2019.

I trust Herman and staff to continue coaching and developing the talent on campus.

Casey Thompson needs to be prepared, and Roschon Johnson may get into the mix sooner than later. Good that he is an EE this year.

While few are comfortable playing true freshmen unless there is no other choice, given that the last two CFP title games were essentially won by true freshmen QBs, my take is that the world is changing...

By the way, does anyone have any insight relative to the progression of Thompson vs. Rising?

Good luck to both of them, still will watch them play when I can.

I haven’t seen any reports but would be interested to know as well.

Pretty sure I'd seen reports that Rising was ahead of Thompson and that Thompson ran scout team offense all year, but I could be wrong. Not sure about how much they developed.

I think that Tom has pretty much of a closed mind when it comes to anyone beating out Sam. It an’t going to happen. And on top of that, his quarterbacks need to be 230 + and hard runners. They are running backs in his system. From what I heard, Rising was never a fit and I could not understand why he ever committed.

For the next two years Sam will be the quarterback unless he gets hurt, and the likelihood of that is high. I hope Tom will give no. 2 a fair chance to compete, and most importantly, enough playing time to be prepared when Sam goes down.

Saban was smart enough to keep Hurts ready by playing him in a lot of games and when he needed him for GA, he was ready. It is ironic that Saban’s fairness in playing Hurts kept his starter from getting the numbers to win the Heisman and enabled OU to lobby the midget into the win. And then Hurts goes to the House of the Midget to finish his career.

Hopefully we have some games with greater margin of victory this year so we can get Thompson some meaningful playing time. Hate the fact that we'll be going into the year with 2 QB's behind Sam that have never taken a snap. Wonder if there are any grad transfer QBs at a lower level that might be enticed by the backup job? Highly doubt it, but I'm sure the coaches are making some calls if they're not comfortable with Thompson as the backup.

I seem to remember Thompson showing some spark in the Spring game but my memory fades.

Just saw the highlights of Thompson on another thread and yep, that's what I remember about him. I left thinking that for all the hype on Rising I was more impressed w Thompson overall. Glad he's thinking of staying. If he is #2 I will guarantee him some playing time, much as I now love Sam I am certain he will have to sit out a few times.

That is the key. However, out of the first seven games (LA Tech, LSU, Rice, OSU, WVa, ou, and Kansas), mop-up time before ou probably will be limited to only 2 (LA Tech and Rice).

As an aside, as long as he graduates in the spring, Shane will have two years of eligibility left. I would like to think (but have my doubts) that was the plan between Herman and Shane and his family all along which would explain his lack of playing time after Sam was hurt in 2018.

Thompson ran scout team all year so there is that. We were always going to lose one of Rising and Thompson at some point so I guess I am more sanguine about it, it stinks to lose Buechele but that is because selfishly it was incredible to have that level of QB in the wings and I totally get going to SMU likely and being there as starter the next two years. I am just glad Rising is going to Pac 12 and not some school where he would play Texas and same with Buechele. I wish both kids best of luck and big thanks to Shane for his leadership and play these past three years, he will have a degree from UT and he is a Longhorn for life.:hookem:

Also don't be shocked if Shane isn't back here in a couple of years as a GA on his way to some day being a coach, Herman has talked about him as another qb coach in sideline all year long.

If Johnson is what he appears to be at qb then it seems that Thompson coming back would only delay his transfer for a year as most expectations would be that Johnson would move into the #2 slot in his second year behind Sam and up to starter when Sam leaves.

I sure would like to see Thompson stay and compete hard for the job.

Casey just had the path cleared for him. He just went from 4 to 2 on the depth chart.

It takes at least two QBs to get thru a season. Even Bama needed two with their talented OLine
