I agree bystander. Checks and balances are important. Design is also important

The government shutdown is a caused by a massive pissing contest. Families are suffering because of it. I just want politicians to be more self aware so that they can pick their fights in a wise fashion. It's too much to ask I know. Which we means we should all be MORE critical of our politicians not LESS.

There's no question that these kids were out of line and obnoxious. It's never ok to disrupt people from exercising their right to free speech. However, I do wish that those who justifiably condemn these guys would condemn the countless incidents of conservative speakers on college campuses getting disrupted by bands of shouters and sometimes violent people. This is an issue on which consistency is desperately needed in a civil society. This Native American leader should have been permitted to march without disruption and disrespect, and Ben Shapiro and even Milo Yiannopolis (as worthless as he is) should be allowed to speak on campuses without the heckler's veto and violence being on the table.

It is the President's fault when spending bills don't pass? That is ricockulous. Congress passes the bills, and the President has every right to sign or veto them as he sees fit. That means both sides are to blame when this sort of thing happens. I'm not a fan of the wall as I've made clear, but that doesn't mean he should have to get it funded separately. If the founders had intended for Congress to set budget priorities on their own, they wouldn't have given the President veto power over the appropriation bills.

The proper role is for Congress to pass a budget reflecting the negotiated priorities of the elected leaders of the United States. That means the President and the Congress.

The optics are bad, but substantively it's a non-factor. People have phones, email, etc. She doesn't have to be there to do the job. It has no bearing on the federal employees. Appointing a Speaker Pro Tem (something that is very routine) doesn't mean somebody else is doing the job. It just means someone is standing in the House chair when the bill passes. That's very common, and nobody had cared about it in the past, because it's largely a ministerial role. That's why Mike Pence seldom presides over the Senate.

I don't know whether to praise Trump for trying or bemoan his incredibly poor tactics on immigration. He has screwed the pooch on immigration and has likely lost the issue for his presidency.

The democrats aren't going to give him anything that could be sold as a victory and he won't for them either.

The next 19 months are going to be nothing but election posturing on both sides.

He was reckless in his use of hyperbole towards those who come over illegally from the south. We can quibble about what he really meant (Did he really mean that there is a criminal element however slight in the numbers who bypass our legal ports of entry or did he insult them all?) but he is the President and enforcing the law is what he put his hand on the Bible for. It's that simple for me. The wall is now a political joke; as Mr. Deez say's, they are acting like stubborn children now.

I have friends in Laredo who are battling it out pretty hard on FB. Most of them are Latino's. It's split down the middle concerning the wall. The insults are flying. If you're for the wall and of a Spanish surname then they'll call you a coconut. Conversely, if you support the Liberals then you're a fake Catholic and all of that.

There's too much hype involved for me to know what is really happening. I think we do know this; the current policy has resulted in MILLIONS of illegal aliens in our country. Many by expired paperwork, many by crossing illegally. We know the coyotes are making their money. When the Dems come up with a comprehensive plan that includes deportation and strong border controls then I'll take them seriously. Otherwise it's sanctuary cities, tipping off those who may be deported and abolishing the enforcement arm.

That's why Trump has lots of fans.

Bystander, you described the Democratic philosophy perfectly. Trump's message is absolutely correct - even if his chosen means of delivering that message is less than ideal.

Not my words but this sums it up well.

"So far, based on film evidence, it seems that the media made several false claims about the incident:

    1. That the boys approached and "surrounded" the drummer. It was he who approached them.

    2. That the boys were jeering, making racial insults, and chanting "build the wall." No such things are heard in any video I've seen.

    3. That there was a threat of violence. On the contrary, the boys seem relaxed and are smiling. No one is screaming or doing anything overtly menacing. It looks like the antitheses of an Antifa gathering, which is always full of rage."

According to a student (he issued a statement on Twitter), the Native American interrupted them, not the way it was portrayed on the video.

    Longest and Husker
Have you actually watched a vid?
MrD I hope you watch it too and tell me when the kids infringed or tried to stop anyone's freedom of expression.

The Indigenous People's protest had ended earlier NOT in the area where the HS kids gathered to wait for the buses. You can clearly see the older man initiated this and the kids did not know what was happening. They were doing cheers when the older man intruded>
I do not know how the kid kept his cool. I am 1/32 native but I would have shoved that drum in his face if he'd played it that close to me.

And :cursing2: The Dem Congressman from the Covington district wants teens banned from wearing MAGA hats.:brickwall:

Here are more angles before and during the incident. Old Native American man maybe not as innocent as the media says...as Paul Harvey would say, here is the rest, (or at least more) of the story.

I wonder if anybody who characterized this incident as "vile" based on grossly one sided MSM fake news, will recant and update their point of view. I'm not hopeful but you never know. People can occasionally surprise you.

I think you have a long wait.

Good on MrD( of course he is not a lib or even close but he did seem to blame the kids for infringing on the freedom of speech of the elderly man) who will at least look at complete videos.

I can't believe what is happening in our country with the media and the vile reactions from the Left. There is a HUGE problem. Thank God ABC and CNN have some adults who are FINALLY calling it as they should have all along.

    No Pay attention
They are now blaming the black protestors and saying the elderly drum beater was trying to " keep peace and defuse the situation"
which of course is utter BS. He got in the kids face and made sure his drumstick came as close to the teen's face without hitting it as possible all the while his face was right at a teen age boy's face. WHO was the instigator? Hmmm? Longest? Husker?
The drum beater had been involved with another white group before AND was instrumental in protesting the ND Pipeline. An experienced agitator.

My cousin (who blocked my mother because she's a Republican; she helped raise him long ago) has been spewing on Facebook about the two big news stories this week. He is unrepentant. He is sick to the core; his entire being is hatred of Trump.

I watched the relevant portions of the two hour American Indian video. This is the biggest pile of fake news baloney I have ever seen.

    F1C9394C-EF6E-48C6-96AD-BD3FE50ACCD9.jpeg

An American Indian walked up to the group and started drumming in this teenager’s face. The teenager kind of smiled at him like “why is this dude drumming in my face?”

Apparently he was guilty of smiling at him with white privilege!

How am I or anyone for that matter supposed to discern what to take seriously anymore or what is actually an illegal racist threat when we have the media and left getting riled up about fake news nothing burgers like “he was smiled at with white privilege?” How am I supposed to take any of the left’s claims seriously anymore when this trumped up baloney is getting held up as the case to show racism in america?

@Statalyzer has a good thread talking about an unwarranted police shooting. It is a real problem that affects everyone, but disproportionately affects african americans. It is a real issue.

Instead, the left focusses on white privilege which I can now only conclude is a way of saying “I hate white people and their existence.”

The Washington Post says “Democracy dies in Darkness”. They state the press is key to a great democracy. I agree. We have entered into darkness due to horrible, incompetent journalism. Real journalism is dead, and its death is taking America into the toilet.

The best way to get a white nationalist movement in the USA is to frame every issue in the country as a racial one and always portray the white person as in the wrong because of the color of his/her skin.

When the problem is tribal loyalty. Tribal loyalty will become more important.

It's a tough balance. The political Left wants ethnic tribalism among minority groups, because it stomps out dissent and promotes everyone in that group thinking alike and therefore voting alike. That's why a black conservative gets demonized harder than a white conservative does. They can't afford to have blacks having their own opinions. At the same time, they can't afford whites to not be divided.

The problem is that long term, you can't promote tribalism among one group without promoting it in other groups. You can't assign credibility to Louis Farrakhan and Al Sharpton without assigning credibility to David Duke and Richard Spencer, because every time you fawn over those guys, you basically give the white nationalist credibility. You prove him right.
