#12/13 Texas (16-3; 6-1) will face NR/NR Texas Tech (10-8; 1-6) in Lubbock this coming Saturday. This will be the 101st game between the two, the most games Texas has played against anyone. Horns hold a 71-29 edge overall, but are a meager two games up in Big 12 play, 22-20. Texas has won ten straight games since breaking a five game losing streak on Feb. 05, 2014 with an emphatic 88-51 win in Austin.

Texas is 6-1 in conference play and has won two in a row since losing at KSU. Tech, other than a 17 point loss to Baylor, has lost six conference games, including Wednesday’s 68-65 loss at WVU by an average of 5.2 points. They will be primed to get their second Big 12 win and break that ten game losing streak to Texas. A second league win would double their Big 12 wins from last season when Tech went 1-17 in league play.

Texas Tech Lady Raiders (10-8; 1-6)
Tech has two of the top ten scorers in Chrislyn Carr (#4, 5-5 Fr. G) at #3 with an average of 18.6 ppg and Brittany Brewer (#20, 6-5 Jr. F) who is ranked #9 with her 15.4 ppg. Erin DeGrate (#1, 6-6 Jr. C) comes in third on the team at 9.3 ppg. Carr (43-145; 29.7%) and Brewer (48-104; 46.2%) account for over half of Tech’s 448 FG attempts in league games. Sydney Goodson (#2, 5-8 G) is third in FG attempts with 60 (16-60; 26.7%). DeGrate has the best FG% on the team at 59.2% on 29 of 49 shots. That percentage is good for fourth in the league. Unfortunately for Tech, four of their eight core players are shooting less than 29 from the field and only DeGrate, Brewer and Zuri Sanders (#30, 6-0 Sr. F) at 46.2% (12-26) are making more than 36% from the field. Five players have attempted at least 10 treys. But only Brewer (10-32; 31.3%) is hitting over 30% from BTA. Carr (17-68; 25.0%) and Goodson (8-36; 22.2%) join Brewer as the primary 3pt shooters for Tech. Carr is excellent from the FT line, connecting on 27 of 32 FTs (84.4%). Goodson, at 86.7% (13-15), has the best FT% on the team. Sanders (13-20; 65.0%) and DeGrate (7-22; 31.8%) are the other Lady Raiders that get to the FT line consistently every game. As a team, though, Tech is ninth in the Big 12 in FT%.

The Lady Raiders are the top rebounding team in conference. That’s fueled by having three of the top eight rebounders and four of the top fourteen. Sanders is at the top of the league with 10.5 rpg. Brewer comes in tied for #4 at 7.6 rpg. Tied for sixth with two others, including Joyner, is DeGrate at 7.4 rpg. In a tie for 14th is Goodson who is averaging 6.6 rpg out of the backcourt. Goodson’s backcourt teammate, Carr, is contributing 4.6 rpg. Goodson, with 24 assists, Carr with 23 assists and Eryka Sidney (#3, 5-6 Jr. G) with 16 assists, are the top three distributors for the Lady Raiders. With six players having reached double digit TOs, Tech is at the bottom of the Big 12 in TO margin with a minus 5.4. That’s just below the Horns’ ninth spot at minus 3.3. Carr is the leader having tallied up 35 TOs while Brewer is second with 22 TOs. Sanders with 18 TOs could join them in having 20+ TOs in league games after this game. Brewer (13 blocks; 1.9 bpg) and DeGrate (9 blocks; 1.3 bpg) rank among the league leaders in blocks. Carr with 13 steals is the only Lady Raider to reach double digits although Sanders (9 steals) and Brewer and Goodson with 8 steals each are poised to join her.

The Lady Raiders show 14 players on their roster. Four are redshirting this season as transfers. Of the ten active players, only eight have played in six or more games while the other two have seen action in only one game apiece. Carr and Brewer have started all seven Big 12 games for Tech. Sanders has started all six games she has been available for. DeGrate (2 starts), Goodson (six starts), Mia Castaneda (#0, 5-6 Jr. G; two starts), Sidney (three starts) and Angel Hayden (#23, 5-6 Soph. G; two starts) have split the other starts. Goodson and Castaneda joined Sanders, Carr and Brewer in the starting lineup in the last game. Eight players form the core of the rotation for Tech. Four of the starters are playing over 30 mpg: Brewer (30.6 mpg), Sanders (32.2 mpg), Carr (35.7 mpg) and Goodson (37.7 mpg). That doesn’t leave a lot of minutes but DeGrate (22.3 mpg), Sidney (23.5 mpg) and Hayden (17.7 mpg) all average in big minutes off the bench. Tihana Stojsavljevic (#5, 6-3 Soph. F) tallied 15 minutes in her one appearance in place of the injured Sanders.

    Texas Longhorns (16-3; 6-1)
Horns have three players ranked in the top 22 scorers in league games. Sug is at #7 (16.1 ppg), Joyner is ranked #21 (11.3 ppg) and Danni is #22 (11.1 ppg). Destiny is averaging 9.0 ppg. Texas’ 44.1% on FGs is second in the Big 12. Sug (41-77; 53.2%) and Charli (11-21; 52.4%) top the team in FG%. Five others top 40% from the field, with Audrey (9-19; 47.4%) and Joyner (33-71; 46.5%) topping the quintet. Sug and Joyner are the only Horns that have exceeded 61 FG attempts. They lead a group of five that have reached at least 50 FG attempts. Charli’s 21 FG attempts is sixth on the team. The Horns have the top team 3pt percentage at 38.7%. Their 93 3s attempts are next to last in the Big 12. Danni is second in the league with her 45.7% on 16 of 35 from BTA. Sug is the second best at making 3s with a 3pt% of 40% (6-15). Destiny has the second most attempts from BTA with 8 of 22 (36.4%). Audrey is the fourth player to be hitting over 35% from BTA with her 37.5% on 3 of 8 3pters. Seven Horns have reached double digit FT attempts. Sug has the most FTs made and attempted (25-32) and the second best FT% (78.1%). Jatarie has the best FT% on the team at 83.3% on 10 of 12 FTs. Danni, Destiny and Charli are hitting over 72% of their FTs.

Joyner (7.4 rpg), Jatarie (5.3 rpg), Sug (5.3 rpg) and Danni (4.3 rpg) are the top four rebounders. Charli (3.7 rpg), Destiny (3.3 rpg) and Olamide (3.0 rpg) are the next line of rebounders. Sug (37 assists; 5.3 apg), Danni (11 assists; 1.6 apg), Joyner (9 assists; 1.3 apg) and Destiny (9 assists; 1.3 apg) are the top four distributors for Texas. Joyner (31 TOs; 4.4 TOPG) and Sug (26 TOs; 3.7 TOPG) have combined for 57 of the team’s 122 TOs. Joyner and Charli share the lead with four blocks each. Joyner tops the team with 11 steals while Sug and Danni each has eight steals.

Sug, Danni, Joyner, Jada and Jatarie have started the last two games. Seven of the players have at least two starts. Eight of the players have played in all seven league games while the other two have gotten into six games. Nine of the players average between 36 mpg and 11 mpg. Danni (36.0 mpg) and Sug (34.9 mpg) are the two less likely to come off the court.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.

With the 6-5 Brewer and 6-6 DeGrate, Tech has more size inside than does Texas. The problem for Tech is that, outside of 6-3 F Stojsavljevic, no other Lady Raider is taller than six foot. Sanders is a similar type of player as TCU’s Okonkwo, an undersized PF that is able to rebound, shoots the midrange shot, drives and hustles on every play. Sanders is going to have a tough task guarding Joyner on the block. But Joyner is going to have to chase Sanders around the court. At least , Texas won’t have to worry about Sanders popping in 3pters. She has yet to attempt one this season. Expect Tech to play tough inside until late when the Horns’ depth should prevail. Brewer will be the post drifting outside and taking the three. Charli would be a good matchup with her.

The Texas backcourt is better than Tech’s as far as shooting. Horns will need to be careful about TOs, though, as Tech’s backcourt thrives on scoring off TOs, especially Carr.

This could turn into a run and shoot game. Tech likes to push the ball and shoot quickly. They take more shots than Texas and almost twice as many 3pters as the Horns do. Their problem has been hitting their shots. The Lady Raiders are seventh in overall FG% and last in 3pt FG%. Texas is second in overall FG% and first in 3pt FG%. Both teams excel in defending the 3 as Texas is second and Tech third in that category. Both should provide problems for the other in getting open looks from BTA. Texas, though, should create more problems for Tech trying to score than the other way around.

This should be a win for the Horns, except that the game is in Lubbock, where the Horns have struggled at times. This season, Texas has struggled to put teams away while Tech has struggled to win. Horns have a plus scoring margin of 5.7 while Tech has a minus scoring margin of 6.0. Tech will be looking to flip the script and pull out their second conference win before the midway point of the conference race. Given all that, I expect Texas to come home with a win under their belts.

Tipoff will at noon Saturday in Lubbock. The game will be carried online by TexasTechTV, The cost is $6.95 for a 24 hour period. It does not automatically renew. vs. Texas (VIDEO)
    Radio will be 105.3 FM.

Last two games, Horns used a player ,most of the game to shadow an opponent's top perimeter player: on Ray of TCU and KU's Kopatich. Wonder if they will use one on Tech's Carr?

man, that was a big collusion between DeGrate and Audrey. Audrey's still on the floor. Hope she is okay. That must have hurt.

Don't think that Audrey will be coming back today. Announcers saying that she hit her head on the court and was likely knocked out.

Tech is really pumped up and playing well. Eight 3s so far, a lot of them wide open when Texas loses a player on defense.

Is Shae injured? The way the fouls are being called, we may need her for a body on the floor. SMH.

40-35 Tech at the half. Tech finally cooled off and Texas started hitting a few shots. Charli and Joanne did a nice job with Sug, Joyner and Jatarie sitting with two fouls each. Tech has DeGrate with two fouls.

Should be an interesting second half with every one that had to sit back on the floor.

Tech ended up with 8 threes for the half after hitting 7 in the first half. Texas hit 3-5 from BTA.

55 all at the end of three. Texas missed some shots the last few minutes of the quarter while Tech made some. Horns need to play this last quarter like they started the third. Tech can smell the upset right now.

Horns pull out the win 78-71 by making FTs.
Danni went 4-4; Joyner 1-2 and Sug 2-2.

Wow, what a game. Tech is going to win more than one Big 12 game this season, especially at home.

Great win by the Horns on the road. :hookem2:
Safe travels to the team and those Horns fans that traveled up there.
