Man, Meme Jackson has been in a big slump since she torched us with 33 pts!

I know their fans are probably foaming out of the mouth right about now. Very unfortunate for a once proud program that people like myself grew up following.

Kinda sorry to read that. I want teams we lose to do well so that helps our SOS and RPI.

Well, this shows that Karen Aston is only the second greatest squanderer of talent in women's college basketball. With half a dozen High School McDonalds All Americans on the roster, Holly Warlick loses to lowly Alabama by 21. At least Texas only lost to Kansas State by 18...Interesting that two former assistants to two of the greats of WCBB are now two of the most underperforming coaches in the NCAA.

The similarities between them are scary. All the way down to the fact that just like Texas, Tennessee’s talent has a tendency to be overrated at times. But you’re right they’ve both underachieved for the most part at their respective programs.

They are indeed similar in many ways. I think Aston is marginally better. Texas last won a national championship over 30 years ago, so Aston cannot recruit on reputation in the same way that Warlick can. At the same time, there is enough high school talent in the state of Texas to win a NC. Can't say the same for TN.

They are both tragic in teaching half court offense, though Aston teams at least understand ball reversal and pick 'n roll. But basically on offense, way too reliant on rebounding, put backs and transition baskets. No motion offense and the aggressive man to man defense means perpetual vulnerability to the backdoor cut. Neither coach scouts adequately. There is almost never a game plan, very few in game adjustments and a shared profound inability to adapt to the personnel on the floor on both sides. Both are very low basketball IQ coaches. The strategy is invariably to out - talent and out hustle opponents. Worked for Pat and Jody, more for Pat, but huge limits to that coaching philosophy in 2019.

Player development also sucks alongside offense against any zone defense with length and speed. An extraordinary Candace Parker-esque talent can transcend these limitations but barring that a sweet sixteen is the limit of this kind of coaching. Give Mulkey or Auriemma or Waltz or VanderVeer or McGraw or even Coale or Mittie or Freese a backcourt of Atkins and McCarty with posts of the calibre of Holmes and White and you are looking at a final four if not a National Championship. Aston will recruit well enough to keep her job and play perennial second fiddle to Baylor in the Big 12 as long as Mulkey is there, unless she steps up her learning curve, and after seven years of the same old same old, I am not optimistic. Good players cycle through, but the team has mostly the same strengths and weaknesses. After worrying about making the tournament for the last few years of the Conradt administration and the GG years, I'll take it. But those of you wanting a conference or national championship, unless TX catches lightning in a bottle, not gonna happen, TX does not have a coach who can do that.

TX can hold steady. Unless TN replaces Warlick with someone who can actually coach, they are in for a precipitous decline. Think LA Tech or ODU. The ghost of PHS can only recruit for so long. . .

If Tennessee is smart, they'll move swiftly in putting their WBB in capable hands while the roster is still loaded with talent. Let them pull in Walz from Louisville or Wes Moore from NC State to work with all that talent and while tradition can still attractive top recruits and it'll be over for the rest of us.

I certainly hope CDC will recognize our coaching ineptitude and move swifter than Tennessee has... We don't have the type of tradition on our side. Hell, we haven't even won a conference title of any kind (regular season or tournament) in what??? 15 yrs? 16 yrs??? OU and Baylor have DOMINATED the Big 12.

Given that neither Tara nor Muffet would leave their current situation, I'd love to have either of the two aforementioned at Texas. I think my favorite is Vic Schafer but his $1.6M salary at MSU would be something I don't think UT would be willing to beat.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know there are people who don't want to see a man take the reigns... But I don't care if it's an alien from Mars as long as it can coach with the best of them and develop our players.

I wonder how we would do in the SEC where we wouldn't have the superior athleticism and size that we have over the other teams like we do in the Big 12 (BU aside). :confused2:

I could see Tennessee making a move but it would have to be a “resignation” from Holly. Fullmer an alumni is the AD and I’m sure he would be worried about the optics of firing an allum that the former players care about. Coach Aston on the other hand isn’t going anywhere and as a fan I really don’t have a problem with that.

The only thing that Texas fans can hope for is that Karen improves strategically as a coach Offensively and defensively and that she recruits more players that make good basketball decisions consistently. Or bring in an assistant coach that can act as the offensive and defensive coordinator and can make in game adjustments on the fly. CDC is not going to get rid of a coach that although has underachieved with the talent at hand for the most part but is still winning and representing the University in a great way.

I agree regarding Texas... Not so sure about the Tennessee situation. Nothing would make me happier than to see KA really get it done and shut us naysayers up. I just don't see it happening though. I'm tired of saying "next year..."

Make that five consecutive losses for the Lady Vols... Arkansas got them 80-79 in Knoxville tonight.

I agree... and hell Holly has beaten KA the past two years. They're just like us -- too dependent on the transition game, and struggle with halfcourt offense against a zone.

Thanks for the post, Scamp. Really makes me feel obsolete. And sad for the Lady Vols and WBB fans who won't get the pleasure of reading his articles any longer.

Didn't rate your post cuz there's no icon for "sad news".

Notre Dame missing shots they usually make in their sleep, just not as sharp as I’m used to seeing.

Zarielle Green has looked good. I always wondered if we recruited her, or if she just wasn't interested. I like the way Tennessee is playing N.D. Hope they win, since they're the underdog and it might help our RPI.

I'm not 100% positive but I believe Green is Tiffany Jackson's niece. If so, it adds more questions regarding her recruitment. I believe she originally committed to Kansas but my memory might be faulty. @moooo will know.

She's incredible. Ogunbowale's 4Q performance against Louisville is what led ND to victory.

There was high interest from her when Coach Aston first got to Texas then it seemed like that all left when Coach Mitchell took the North Texas job.

I'm not so sure Tennessee is doomed, whether their coaching is mediocre or not. I was impressed with their players. A lot of the time they were playing four frosh and a sophomore against ND, and did very well until late in the third. A lot of talent. In another year, they may be a heck of a team. And by the way, they beat us.

I agree. And they didn't have Jackson (?) last night, who is the player who basically beat us. With Horston, they are going to be loaded. Still, one wonders about them losing 5 games in a row. Another roller coaster team, I guess, as Sutton called us. It wouldn't shock me if they get knocked out early in the playoffs or if they go on a deep run.

The good thing is that our ride does not often end in a loss, just a loss of most of the lead.
