#12/13 Texas (17-4; 7-2) will travel to Norman, OK to play the NR/NR Oklahoma Sooners (5-14;1-7) on Saturday, Feb. 02. Texas won the first match between the two teams this season, 73-63. OU is seeking their second home win the conference which would also be their second league win. Horns will be looking for their second straight Big 12 road win and eighth overall in the league. Texas has won three in a row against the Sooners to run the series record to 32-25 in favor of he Longhorns. The Big 12 series is 23-22 in regular Big 12 play plus 4-2 in the Big 12 tournament, all favoring Texas.

Both teams are coming off close losses. Texas dropped a to WVU on Monday, the Mountaineers first win ever in Austin. Oklahoma lost a 79-88 game at Kansas on Wednesday. It was the Horns’ first loss in four games and their second in league play. Oklahoma has not won since their opening Big 12 game versus Texas Tech. They have lost seven games in a row since that opening day win. Texas is 3-1 on the road while OU is 1-2 at home.

    Oklahoma Sooners (5-14;1-7)
Ana Llanusa (#22, 6-0 Soph. G) is the leading scorer for the Sooners. She is joined in double figure scoring by Taylor Robertson (#30, 5-7 Fr. G) who is averaging 12.0 ppg and Shaina Pellington (#14, 5-7 Soph. G) at 11.0 ppg. Madi Williams (#25, 6-0 Fr. G/F) is the fourth leading scorer adding 8.8 ppg. Those four have taken at least 70 shot attempts with Tatum Veitenheimer (#32, 5-8 Fr. G) fifth in FT attempts with 46. Jessi Mercer (#0, 5-7 Fr. G) tops a quartet of Sooners that are the only ones to hit at least 40% of their FGs. Mercer is at 47.4% (18-38). Ijemoma Odimgbe (#24, 6-4 Sr. F) is second with a FG% of 44.4% (4-9). Pellington is third at 41.7% (30-72) and Robertson fourth at 40% (28-70). Robertson is the most prolific shooter from BTA (18-47; 38.3%). Llanusa is not far behind at 14 of 43 (32.6%). Mercer is the most accurate at 45% (9-20). Veitenheimer’s 2 of 11 from BTA (18.2%) make her the fourth Sooner to reach double digits in 3pt attempts. Llanusa (42-52 FTs; 80.8%), Pellington (27-40 FTs; 67.5%), Robertson (22-23 FTs; 95.7%) and Williams (10-21 FTs; 47.6%) have combined for 125 of OU’s 189 FT attempts.

Williams is the leading rebounder with an average of 6.4 rpg. Mandy Simpson (#3, 6-0 Soph. F) is second at 5.3 rpg. Veitenheimer is third at 4.3 rpg. Three others average between 3.1 and 3.4 rpg. Three players are the top distributors, Veitenheimer (25 assists), Pellington (22 assists) and Simpson (21 assists). Seven players have reached double figures in TOs, topped by Simpson (31 TOs), Veitenheimer (28 TOs) and Pellington (21 TOs). OU is eighth in blocked shots with 18. Odimgbe has eight of those blocks. Three Sooners have reached double figures in steals: Robertson (13 steals), Llanusa (12 steals) and Veitenheimer (11).

Eight players have started at least one conference game. Robertson and Simpson have started all eight games. Williams (7 starts), Llanusa (5 starts) and Veitenheimer (6 starts) joined Robertson and Simpson in the starting lineup in the last game. Oklahoma has used a nine player rotation most of the games with eight of those players averaging double digit minutes per game. Robertson’s 33.6 mpg lead the group. Simpson (27.9 mpg), Veitenheimer (27.3 mpg), Williams (26.5 mpg) and Llanusa (23.6 mpg) make up the group of five that are on the floor the most. Pellington (19.9 mpg), Murcer (19.8 mpg) and Odimgbe (12.4 mpg) are in the teens while Nydia Lampkin (#21, 6-3 Fr. F) has averaged 7.1 mpg in the eight games she has played in.

    Texas Longhorns (17-4; 7-2)
Horns will bring three players scoring in double figures to this game. Sug (15.3 ppg), Joyner (11.6 ppg) and Danni (10.7 ppg). Jatarie (9.2 ppg) and Destiny (8.9 ppg) are the next two scorers. Both Sug (51-96; 53.1%) and Joyner (42-96; 43.8%) are the top shooters for the Horns. Danni (30-77; 39%), Jatarie (35-71; 49.3%) and Destiny (25-68; 36.8%) are the other main shooters on the team. Danni is the top 3pt shooter by volume (25-68) and percentage (41.9%). Sug (6-16; 37.5%) and Audrey (3-8; 37.5%) are second in 3pt FG%. Destiny is second in number of threes attempts (10-28, 35.7%). Joyner has hit three of twelve 3pters (25%). All ten have FT attempts with Olamide (6-6) and Joanne (2-2) perfect from the line. Destiny (20-25; 80%), Jatarie (13-16; 81.3%), Sug (30-38; 78.9%), Charli (10-13; 76.9%) and Danni (18-24; 75%) are all over 75% from the FT line. Joyner (17-33; 51.5%), Audrey (2-4; 50%) and Jada (6-13; 46.2%) continue to struggle from the FT line although Joyner did hit 3 of 4 in the last game.

Joyner is the leading rebounder with an average of 7.2 rpg. Sug (5.7 rpg), Jatarie (5.3 rpg) and Danni (4.4 rpg) lend excellent support on the boards. Sug is the only Horn to exceed 17 assists with 46 (5.1 apg). Danni (17 assists) and Joyner (11 assists) are the next two top distributors. Sug (34 TOs; 3.8 TOPG), Joyner (32 TOs; 3.6 TOPG) and Jatarie (20 TOs; 2.2 TOPG) are at the top of the list in TOs. Our posts (Charli—7 blocks; Joyner—4 blocks; and Jatarie—4 blocks) account for 15 of the team’s 17 blocks. Add in Jada’s two blocks since she does play the four at times and one could say that no guards are getting any blocks. Joyner tops the team in steals with 13 while Jada has ten steals. Sug and Danni each adds eight steals to the team’s total of 55 steals. Every player has at least one steal.

Sug, Danni and Joyner have started all nine league games. Jatarie and Jada have joined them in the starting lineup the last four games. In the first five games, it was Destiny and Olamide starting. Seven players have played in all nine Big 12 games to date. Joanne and Charli have sat out one game due to coach’s decision while Audrey sat out the last game because of an injury suffered the game before. Danni (36.6 mpg) and Sug *34.6 mpg) spend the most time on the court. Joyner, Jatarie, Destiny and Jada all average between 21 and 26 mpg. Olamide, Audrey and Charli are putting in between 11.6 and 11.8 mpg. Joanne is at 5.3 mpg with her minutes increasing the last couple of minutes.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.

Texas will have a significant height advantage over the starting posts, both of whom come in at six feet. But OU coach Coale has shown a tendency to play the 6-4 Sr. Odimgbe and the 6-3 Fr. Lampkin more in the last four games. An interesting matchup, should both Odimgbe and Lampkin play, will be Lampkin versus Joyner. Texas dominated the boards by 16, 46-30, including grabbing 18 offensive boards. But Lampkin played just six minutes and Odimgbe two minute. I would expect that to change, just based on the past four games. Of course, Charli should also get more than the 11 minutes she totaled in the last Texas-OU game.

Danni and OU’s Robertson cancelled each other out as each was 3-8 from BTA. Llanusa will be more difficult to cover this time around as she was just coming back from an injury the first game. Jada is likely to get first crack at covering Llanusa with help from Audrey if she is cleared to play in this game. The play of Sug will be a big part of how this game goes. Both Joyner and Llanusa were both recently returning off injuries at the time and both will be more difficult matchups in this game.

Both teams like to run with OU more reliant on the three than is Texas. Both are slow starters in games with the second half being their best scoring halves. Both are good at keeping games close with Texas doing a better job of closing out games successfully than is OU. Texas should dominate in the paint once again versus the Sooners. Horns had a 19 to 9 edge in second chance points in the first game. They had 42 points in the paint but only two fast break points. Texas was able to get to the FT line 24 times but was unable to take advantage of that, making only 13 (54.2%). Both teams have shown improvement at the FT line in recent games with both now reaching over 70% in league play after starting out in the low 60s percentage-wise. OU has done a better job of getting to the FT line by a slim margin—four more FTs per game in league play.

OU’s ability to stay with Texas on the boards will depend on Lampkin and Odimgbe getting more than a combined eight minutes. The other question will be if they can stop Jatarie (6-9 FGs) and Joyner (14 rebs, 10 pts). Both Jatarie (13 pts, 9 rebs) and Charli (9 pts, 8 rebs) came close to joining Joyner with double doubles.

This will be a case of OU’s perimeter shooting and fast break game versus the Horns’ inside game and perimeter shooting. If the teams’ perimeter game balances out, Texas should have an advantage with their post play. Expect OU to use a zone defense primarily while Texas uses a man to man primarily with some zone thrown in.

Can’t wait to see this game. Both teams will be looking to get back on the winning track. Texas can’t afford to look past any game as close as past games have been. OU has been getting closer to pulling out a win. For Texas, #1 Baylor will be looming on Monday.

The game will be televised on FSSW at 3 PM this Saturday. 105.3 FM will carry the radio broadcast. The game be streamed on the Fox Sports Go app which can be downloaded to play on various devices. Link: Women's College Basketball - Texas at Oklahoma

OU looks like a D3 team. And a sloppy D3 team at that. We are playing down to them and still winning handily.

Some of these Norman commercials, lol. Flogistix is supposed to be flow-gistics but looks more like flog-a-sticks.
