#12/13 Texas (18-4; 8-2) will host #1/1 Baylor (19-1; 9-0) on Monday at 6 PM in a battle of the Big 12’s top two teams. Baylor is seeking their fourth undefeated regular season Big 12 title. Horns are looking for their first Big 12 title since the 2003-04 season.

Texas leads the overall series with the Lady Bears 58-39. Baylor has the edge in Big 12 games 19-32. Since Jan. 12, 2011, Baylor is 18-1 against Texas, losing only on Feb. 06, 2017 in Waco. That includes eight straight wins in Austin. The last time that the Horns beat the Lady Bears in Austin was Jan. 31, 2010 which is the same season that Texas last swept Baylor.

    Baylor Lady Bears (19-1; 9-0)
Kalani Brown (#21, 6-7 Sr. C) leads the Lady Bears in scoring (16.2 ppg), FGs made, attempted and %: 59-95, 62.1% and FTs made, attempted and %: 28-35, 80% for all players that have at least ten attempts of each. Juicy Landrum (#20, 5-9 Jr. G) with 13.6 ppg, Lauren Cox (#15, 6-4 Jr. F) at 12.9 ppg and Chloe Jackson (#24, 5-9 Grad. G) at 9.8 ppg join Brown as the top four scorers for Baylor. Those four have combined to take 362 of Baylor’s 568 FG attempts in league play. Cox (45-86; 52.3%), Queen Egbo (#25, 6-5 Fr. C; 23-45, 51.1%), Didi Richards (#2, 6-1 Soph. G; 29-57, 50.9%) and NaLyssa Smith (#1, 6-3 Fr. F) join Brown as five of the core eight players to be making over 50% from the field. The other three are at 42% or better: Landrum (40-95; 42.1%), Jackson (39-86; 45.3%) and Moon Ursin (#12, 5-7 Soph. G; 12-27, 44.4%). The Lady Bears are last in the league in 3pters made per game at 2.7 per game. They are also last in 3pters made and attempted but third in 3pt FG%. Landrum is the main 3pt threat with 13 makes in 38 attempts (34.2%). Cox is second at 5 of 16 (31.3%). Ursin (3-8; 37.5%) and Jackson (1-3; 33.3%) are the only others to have attempted more than two 3pters. Baylor’s top four FT shooters are Brown (28-35; 80%), Cox (21-28; 75%), Landrum (16-21; 76.2%) and Smith (14-18; 77.8%). Richards is having trouble at the FT line, going 7 of 17 for 41.2%.

Cox is the leading rebounder at 8.0 rpg while Brown checks in at 6.6 rpg. Landrum (5.1 rpg) and Smith (5.0 rpg) help make Baylor the top rebounding team in the Big 12. Baylor tops the league in assists per game at 23.4 apg with four players in the league’s top ten in assists per game: Jackson (61 assists, 6.1 apg), Landrum (44 assists, 4.4 apg), with Richards and Cox each with 33 assists (3.7 apg). Only one player has failed to register at least one steal in league play. Three have reached double figures in steals: Richards (14), Landrum (13) and Jackson (10). Baylor has two of the top four shotblockers and three of the top eleven in Cox (22 blocks, 2.4 bpg), Brown (15 blocks, 1.7 bpg) and Egbo (9 blocks, 1.0 bpg). The Lady Bears top the Big 12 with 7.4 bpg.

Landrum (37.5 mpg) leads three Lady Bears averaging over 30 mpg. The other two are Jackson (32.8 mpg) and Cox (30.3 mpg). Brown (26.6 mpg) and Richards (26.1 mpg) make up the five averaging over 20 mpg. Smith (16.7 mpg), Ursin (12.1 mpg) and Egbo (10.4 mpg) comprise the rest of the core eight. The other four players have gotten in between five and six games for averages from 4.5 to 5.0 mpg. Brown, Cox, Richards, Jackson and Landrum had started the first eight games. Ursin replaced Landrum in the starting lineup in game nine as Landrum was held out due to a foot injury. Reports stated that she could have played if needed. She will likely play against Texas although I am not sure if she will start or come off the bench as Ursin had an outstanding game versus Tech, going 5-6 for 12 points.

    Texas Longhorns (18-4; 8-2)
Texas gets 83% of its scoring from five players: Sug (14.8 ppg), Joyner (11.8 ppg), Danni (10.9 ppg), Jatarie (10.0 ppg) and Destiny (8.9 ppg). Those five have taken at least 77 FG attempts with none of the other five having taken more than 32 attemtps. Jatarie (42-81; 51.9%) and Sug (54-105; 51.4%) are the most accurate shooters on the team while Joyner (48-111; 43.2%) has taken the most shots. Danni is the primary 3pt shooter for Texas at 42.9% on 21 of 49. That puts her fourth in the Big 12 in 3pt accuracy. Destiny is the next main threat from BTA, having hit on 11 of 33 (33.3%). Sug is also shooting well from BTA, if not shooting as much as Danni and Destiny. She is 7 of 19 for 36.8%. Sug (33-42; 78.6%) and Joyner (19-40; 47.5%) are just short of taking half of the team’s FTs. Olamide (7-7; 100%), Jatarie (16-19; 84.2%), Destiny (20-25; 80%), Charli (12-15; 80%) and Danni (18-24; 75%) join Sug in doing well from the FT line.

Joyner (7.5 rpg), Sug (5.8 rpg), Jatarie (5.5 rpg) and Danni (4.0 rpg) are the top rebounders on the team. Destiny, Charli and Olamide each adds 3.4 rpg. Sug’s 52 assists (5.2 apg) puts her fourth in the league in assists per game. The other three top distributors are Danni (17 assists, 1.7 apg), Joyner (15 assists, 1.5 apg) and Destiny (11 assists, 1.1 apg). Sug (3.8 TOPG), Joyner (3.6 TOPG) and Jatarie (2.1 TOPG) top the Horns in this negative category. Texas was credited with no blocks versus Oklahoma so the top shotblockers remain the same: Charli with seven, Joyner and Jatarie with four each. Horns have three players that have reached double digit in steals: Joyner with fourteen, Sug and Jada with twelve steals each.

Joyner, Sug, Danni, Jatarie and Jada have started the last five games together. Joyner, Sug and Danni have started all ten Big 12 games. Seven of the ten players have at least five starts. Nine of the ten players have played in nine games with Audrey missing the last two due to being in the concussion protocol. Her availability for Baylor is still uncertain. Nine of the players are averaging double digits in minutes played. Joanne has seen an increase in her minutes per game recently and has raised her mpg to six mpg. Danni (36.0 mpg) and Sug (34.3 mpg) are the iron women on the team. Jatarie, Destiny and Jada all average in the 20s in mpg while Olamide, Charli and Audrey are averaging between 11 and 12 mpg.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.

Tech’s 6-6 Erin DeGrate and 6-5 Brittany Brewer offer similar size but BU’s Cox and Brown are on a different level, not to mention their stellar reserves Smith and Egbo. This is going to be the best frontcourt our posts have faced this season, imo. Better than Mississippi State’s combo of Anriel Howard and Teaira McCowan. Jatarie, Joyner and Olamide will have to keep Brown from setting up shop in her favorite part of the paint, a difficult task since whichever is playing her will give up height and weight as well as strength. Due to Brown’s rebounding partners, she is able to leave early and head to the opposing basket when a shot is put up. The Texas post defending her will need to be aware of this tendency and stay with her or it will be an easy layup for Brown. Cox’s and Brown’s ability to block shots (they average 4.1 blocks a game) puts a damper on penetration by opposing guards and a premium on post players being able to finish at the rim when the shot is there. A matchup to watch will Joyner and Cox. Both can handle the ball with Joyner having the edge there. Both look to stretch the defense with Cox the better 3pt shooter. Both are strong rebounders with Cox the better shot blocker.

I expect Richards, Baylor’s top perimeter defender, to guard Danni., the Horns’ best 3pt shooter. That means that Sug and Destiny will need to hit some 3pters while Danni works to get a good look. The ability to penetrate and pull up and hit the midrange jumper in front of the Baylor shotblockers will be critical. Neither team will have an advantage depth-wise. Texas goes ten deep; Baylor usually goes eight deep but can bring in another four players if needed due to foul trouble.

A Texas win would be a big upset. The Horns are capable of it but will need to be on their top game all 40 minutes. They can’t start slow nor can they allow Baylor back in the game should they get a double digit lead.

The top two rebounding teams will be going at it this Monday. Both do an excellent job of denying offensive rebounds to their opponents. The big edge for Baylor is their ability to block shots and close down the paint as a result. Horns are ninth in the Big 12 with 1.7 blocks per game. Don’t’ expect many blocks against the Baylor posts. Texas likes to run as does Baylor. Brown gives Baylor the edge in the half court game. The Texas posts will need to be physical without drawing fouls, especially Jatarie, our most experienced post. Positioning, especially on defensive rebounds, will be critical for Texas. Baylor excels at diving to the basket for open layups when Brown or Cox are double teamed. Texas guards are very good at penetrating and getting up a mid range jumper.

Game time is early: 6 PM Monday, Feb. 04 in Austin. The game will be televised on ESPN2 with 105.3 FM carrying the radio broadcast.

I always come home and rewatch the game if we win. Tonight I set my DVR to record 30 extra minutes to capture the double overtime. :hookem::arrow-up:

Underwood is a complete liability on both ends. She might work really hard but playing hard isn’t enough to beat the likes of Baylor. Not really sure what she does well enough to get as much playing time as she does.

Our team is just not good fam. I’ve tried not to toss the harpoon but this is embarrassing already. Don’t let the 12 points confuse you. The fact that we couldn’t make a 2P basket, no free throws is ridiculous. Joyner’s three attempt at the end was just stupid. This offense is on life support. They stand around. You’re not going to cleanly offensively rebound against Baylor. Yet we are posting up on them?!? There was a stretch of two minutes (at least) where we were just not dribbling on offense once we set up. Then when Sug tried to start something...turnover.

If we lose by less than 20 it’ll be a miracle.

And this is with Kalani having no points and Lauren only 2 (or 4)? We are toast. I’m not generally a naysayer but this is pathetic.

And like here’s the thing. We are without two would be starters (maybe). Our season would be totally different. Add in Chas (mishandled) and we are over performing as it is. That’s dangerous. I now am in the camp that Karen isn’t going to get it done.

And you know maybe it isn’t Karen. The little snippets of audio she’s giving are solid and sound. So then why is the team having that problem? Either not prepared coming in or we just don’t have smart players.

Texas wants (and honestly probably frankly needs) Joyner to be the MVP of our team but she is just NOT getting it done: dumb turnovers (and untimely), stupid shots taken, missing easy shots, and sometimes lazy defense.

At halftime Kalani hasn’t attempted a FG. We are 4-17 from 2P.

7 pt deficit at the half, nice job by the Horns to cut the BU lead in half. Shooting % about the same for both teams, Horns a stellar 7-10 from 3 pt range, BU making just one trey. But we're +5 on the TOs and haven't made it to the FT line yet. But we've got a close contest on our hands, at this point anyway. We desperately need Joyner, Destiny and perhaps Charli to get things going in the second half. BU only + 5 on rbs, that stat might have been worse. Let's keep in together, stay together, and play with confidence after the break. Let's not give away any more of those big runs....at some point you're not going to claw you're way back anymore.

BU up by 21 at the end of the 3rd. We had a meltdown in the 3rd qtr. Can we claw our way back or will BU continue to give us problems?

We desperately need an offensive assistant coach!!!

We didn't win, but did ourselves proud anyway. Where are all the Karen Aston haters? I'm sure she is to blame for all our mistakes tonight, right?
