Freaking moron. I gurandamntee had he stayed for 2006, his life would not be the train wreck it is now.
I'm not close enough to Vince to judge his value as a human being, but second offense DWI is life threatening criminality.
I hope he gets help. He still has so much potential as a man. 2 Dwis.are not the end of the world. When you realize what he overcame to become the Great QB he is still worthy of our respect. I remember when he kept his promise to a Round Rock school and went back to encourage them to stay in school and learn. Hook'em Vince
Doubt it. His draft position would have been about the same and his NFL-level talent (or lack thereof) would have been about the same. I knew one of the Titans' training assistants who followed Fisher to Los Angeles (now works for Showtime producing their boxing). Said that everyone was always in Vince's ear about drugs/parties. I bet that was the case in Austin and I bet it's the case now. He's Johnny Football without the girlfriend beating and rich dad.
From the linked article in the OP: "The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department told the Houston Chronicle that Young's black Cadillac was stopped at an intersection with the hazard lights on early Monday morning. He failed several field sobriety tests." I bet what gave it away to the deputy was when VY was asked if he had been drinking and he replied: "Hey, ya'll wanna go fire Smokey? Get in."
Fisher was a loser (look at the Rams post-Fisher), his assistants were probably losers too. Vince was a Rookie of the Year in the NFL, despite Fisher's best efforts to ruin him.
Around New Years I think there are cab-like services that not only take you home, but have another driver that will follow with your vehicle so it's not left overnight to be subject to vandalism or need to go back and pick up the next morning. I'm guessing the greater Houston area has such an offering every day of the year, no? If I were VY or even a non-celeb with an expensive set of wheels and insist on still doing the nightlife thing, stuff 2 or 3 $100 bills in your wallet with the telephone number of said service. (Edit: I'm betting a guy like VY, not meant to be especially critical, when he's out mixing it up with a bunch of fellow drinkers at a nightspot can easily spend $200-$300 on their card buying the most expensive drinks --- when others aren't buying him drinks). Waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy cheaper than a DWI charge. The second probably gets real expensive. Isn't the 3rd DWI mandatory behind bars for a while? It's not a threat to your manhood to admit you've had too much to drink. You need to put that in your mind before you start drinking. If you need to rationalize just don't drive after a bunch of drinks under the excuse that "some drunk out there might bump into me at a stop sign, call the cops, and then I'm in lockup just because I've had a few and someone else hit me." Whatever it takes, no excuse for someone with financial means for alternatives.
I hope he gets some help. He is not a bad person, like Johnny Domestic Abuse. But he sure still has a problem. Dude has pissed away a lot more than most of us would ever dream of having. I do think Jeff Fischer is a complete moron who made the situation worse. But Vince being Vince was part of how his NFL career went too.
As a sober person (32 years now) I can tell you that the alcoholic/drug addict asks themselves this question every sick, hung-over morning. "Why do I keep doing this?" It's part of the insanity of the disease. There's no explaining it. Some finally reach a bottom and seek help. Sometimes the judicial system intervenes. Many end up in prison or graveyards. Hopefully VY finds his way into treatment.
I could easily turn the quote around to "VY was a loser" and base it on facts/stats about his inability to QB an NFL team. But I liked him at Texas, so I won't. Despite your personal feelings about Fisher, the assistant isn't a loser (good friend and has no reason to lie). He's well-respected in his field and parlayed it into other good positions. I'll say this: he's obviously doing better for himself than VY is. VY was RoY in a watered-down offensive class in which he threw more picks than TDs, had a sub-70 passer rating, and caught the eye of the beholden because of his comebacks and Tennessee turnaround. He made the Pro Bowl after 3 AFC QBs turned down the spot due to injuries or playoffs. He was not a great NFL QB and didn't really have the potential to be one either.
I don't care who you are but one DWI is careless, at best, and more than that you either need help with a real problem or you are just a dumb *** making bad decisions
As a guy who makes his living selling alcohol, I hope I never, ever make a dime off of VY. Some people use alcohol. Some people get used by it. The second group, of which VY seems to be a member, needs all the help they can get.
Moon, congratulations on your 32 years! My only "but" to these posts is that (experience from an earlier era), partying and alcoholism don't necessarily connect with every person. I know there's some here that are clinically more versed/experienced than I, but it could be just a roll of the dice decision at a bad time (both times). Once a college associate said that it you go to happy hour every Friday, that makes you an alcoholic, because you "have to go" every Friday. I thought it was interesting that you apparently did not need happy hour Saturday through Thursday, you were still an alcoholic for 1/7 of your activities. 2 cents.
"but it could be just a roll of the dice decision at a bad time (both times)." Or he could be fortunate not to have been caught more often than he has been. In my (much) younger days, I was never caught, but there were a bunch of times I could have been.
He's about $38 million dollars short of being a millionaire. I'm not sure how much money he actually has left at this point. An ESPN 30 for 30 about Vince Young would be must see TV. Kind of like watching a train wreck. I hope UT severs all ties with Vince. Much like A$M has disowned Johnny Football. Such an embarrassment.
This University is indebted to Mr. Young for bringing the first title in 35 years to the 40 acres. He was the difference in two Rose Bowls that Keith Jackson didn't necessarily think we deserved/knew what to do in Pasadena. We've all made mistakes in life, pro athletes are under a big microscope, so their mistakes are amplified. Hornfans has quality people posting on this site, but we can't walk in Vince's shoes because we can't do what he was capable of doing. If we were in some parallel universe, could we all say that we wouldn't be tripped up by fame and fortune?
There is NO doubt in my mind that I would NOT piss away $38 million in less than 3 years. Regardless of fame and fortune. I'll always cherish the NC Rose Bowl (I was there in person). However, I hope The University ceases to pay Vince any money moving forward.
