    A few years ago there was a player who could hit threes at near 40%, Abrams was his last name.

    Abrams, Mouton(streaky shooter), J’covan, Durant, hell even Boddicker shot better than anyone during the Smart tenure, and there were others that Barnes had on his teams that made deep runs in the ncaa. Krivack (sp) back in the day would have scored double if there had been a three point line. Smart apparently just recruits athletes, not necessarily players with basketball skills.

    Smart needs to adopt the old Hank Iba offensive practice philosophy.

    My uncle and his first cousin played for Iba after WWII. Iba made players find their "spot" on the floor. Then after practice they had to hit fifty shots from their spot. He said when he had to have a bucket, he wanted five guys on the court in their spot.

    Anyone notice where a Rick Barnes coached team is ranked now?

    Well, it ^^^ is a plan. SS seems to have no plan in those situations. If he does, his team has not executed anything that seems organized or planned in those moments.

    Last night, Barnes' No.1 ranked Fightin' DayGlose went up against Frank Martin's unranked Cocks of USC.

    Last time Barnes had the No.1 team go against ol' bug eyes his Horns lost to No.10 KSU, after just one week at the top of the heap.

    Not last night, DayGlo won fairly comfortably.

    And Frank Martin's eyeballs did NOT pop out of his skull.

    It really does look like we have multiple coaching issues. Our offense isn't always as bad as it has been - but the closer it gets to the end of either half, the worse our offense gets. Let us bring the ball up after a missed shot with 8:17 left and we're likely to do a decent job with spacing, cutting, screening, finding the open guy, etc. Give us a dead ball with 0:20 left and we tend to not do any of the above.

    And then there's stuff lately I've seen that's definitely been poor decisions from the coach. E.g. against Georgia at the end we would press hard for about 15 seconds, then deliberately foul, getting the worst of both worlds. Against Iowa State we didn't recognize a situation where our best chance was to deliberately miss a FT (not a very good chance, but much better than hoping for the opponents to miss both of theirs). Lots of little things like this adds up to losing a lot of close games, and then saying "Dang we keep playing good teams so close" afterward.

    I went to Google Translate and selected "Coach Speak" for "Detect Language" and "English" for "Translation" and copied and pasted this part of your post....it translated:

    "Lots of little things like this adds up to losing a lot of close games, and then saying "Dang we keep playing good teams so close" afterward."

    as

    "Good athletes, poor coaching."

    if shaka coached as well as he recruited the Horns would be ranked in the top 10, and vying for top seed in the B12 tournament.

    I agree. So I wonder... why doesn't he get good assistant coaches.

    That statement has squat to do with Shaka's ability to coach.

    There are three guys on THIS team, not just ever, that make 35% or better. I feel pretty comfortable with their 3pt shooting.

    And from the other comments about other players in past, there have been plenty of 3pt shooters at Texas who have played for the various Texas coaches.

    I have an idea, how about Shaka tell Osetkowski if he ever takes another three pointer he won't play another second for UT. That in itself will raise the 3-point percentage for the team. This year so far he is 15 of 66 and last year he was 42 of 146. This dude has taken 212 shots from behind the arc shooting 26%. Why? Sure he may make an occasional big shot, but he has a high probability of clanking it. Maybe Shaka has told him and is punishing him because his minutes are down from 35 per game last year to 29 this year. We NEED Dylan down low because he's the leading rebounder even though he only plays 29 minutes. He can be a force down low, but not behind the arc....WHY ARE THEY RUNNING PLAYS WHERE HE EVEN THINKS OF COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE BASKET PAST THE FREE THROW LINE?!?!? UGH! It's not rocket science and that's directly on the coach.

    As you said there are plenty of guys who can hit the bomb at a decent pace. It would be better if someone could hit 42% to 44%, but just don't let Dylan take them at 22% like he is doing this year.

    Febres 37%
    Ramey 37%
    Roach 35%
    Coleman 34%

    Another thing that would improve percentage, which is completely on piss poor coaching, is being better at setting up the three. Many times they just lollygag around and jack it up late because it's the only option. I would lay down money that those four mentioned above would be closer to 40% just by setting up better shots.

    I have to agree about Dylan. I like the way he plays inside, not so much his taking threes. His strength is playing inside and he needs play to that. I am okay with the occasional three but there have been games where he seems to focus on shooting threes to the detriment of his inside game.

    Watch closer. There is a lot more work to set up good threes that just get missed than there is throwing up a heave at the buzzer because there isn't any other choice.

    Can't argue that O is more effective inside than outside.

    I see that they work on setting it up shots, but I believe there are enough lazy plays where one guy dribbles around then heaves a 3 to affect the percentages by 3-5%. Play crisp and with a purpose every time down the court while keeping D.O. from shooting 3's and we might have 3 or 4 more wins considering how many close games we've lost. 16-6 would look and feel a whole lot better.

    Smart has an opportunity over the last 6 games of the regular season to demonstrate he can be a decent if not good coach. The schedule gives him a fair opportunity to go 6-0 and a good chance to go 5-1. ISU, K-State, and Okie-State at home. WVU, Dirt Burglars, and "Me--too" U on the road. Texas should win all the home games and WVU and at least split the other two. However, given that Texas has only won two in a row under Smart with his recruited players once, I think it is most likely the team goes 3-3 at best, losing all road games (maybe beating the Dirt Burglars since Smart seems to be able to do that) and possibly dropping one of ISU or K-State at home. Texas has at least as good or better talent than all the teams remaining but is overmatched in coaching in all but the Okie state game. Even the cockroach Drew gets the edge.

    Forgot about Tech on the road. That is a loss. And Frogs at home (toss-up) but should win. Talent wise we are even or better than each but coaching matchup favors Tech and Frogs in a huge advantage. Tech destroying Dirt Burglars on the road

    Osetkowski should not be hanging out at the three point line ever and should only take the wide open occasional three (he gets one a game and if he makes it he can take another one). O should be setting back screens for Hayes and cutters and posting smaller players in a favorable matchup. He seems to be a decent passer out of the post when the double team comes if he doesn't get lazy with the pass or try to make the highlight reel pass.

    To often it seems this team runs an initial set (the weave which I think is pointless and the players seem to be just going through the motions and then a high ball screen and roll) and if that doesn't work then every one stands around for the remaining 15 -20 seconds on the shot clock waiting for Coleman or Roach to drive and shoot or dish. This often results in a desperation 3 as the shot clock runs out or a contested three from a player not in his ideal spot.

    Unfortunately, at 13-10 before Saturday night's game at WVU, they've got 8 more games, so 2 more chances to get those Ls added up:

    @WVU
    KSU
    oSu
    @OU
    @BU
    ISU
    @Tcech
    TCU

    My guess they go 1-7:

    @WVU-L
    KSU-L
    oSu-W
    @OU-L
    @BU-L
    ISU-L
    @Tcech-L
    TCU-L

    to finish the regular season at 14-17, lose a first round Big 12, finishing 14-18, but getting an invite to one of those "even worse than what the NIT has become" post season tournaments.

    Well, this is a good time for predicting the remainder of the season. My guess is 5-2:
    KSU- W
    osu-W
    @ou-W
    @bu-W
    ISU-L
    @TTU-L
    tcu-W

    I hope they go 4-3 over last seven, best case they go 5-2, I fear they go 2-5.

    5 wins in these last seven and big XII tourney should get them into the NCAA so finding those five wins somehow someway is the key.

    I think the two safest predictions are osu—win and ttu—loss. Every other game is a toss up with home wins the slight favorite and road losses the slight favorite (dirt burglars are not good right now and the Horns should be better than “Me-to” bears if horns weren’t Jekyll and Hyde on the road).

    Be careful, there is no safe predictions with this team. They could lose to OSU and beat Tech. I wonder if Vegas is tired of us which is why they just seem to make us the favorite in every game figuring they'll win 50% and break even.
