#15/15 Texas (20-5; 10-3) will host the NR/NR Kansas State Wildcats (15-10; 6-7) on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 4 PM CST. Kansas State ended the longing win streak of the series of eight games by either team with their win on Jan. 16 earlier this year. The Horns lead the overall series 22-15 and the Big 12 series 16-15. Interestingly, Texas is 0-3 versus the Wildcats in the Big 12 tournament.

In conference, Texas is second at 10-3 while KSU is in sixth at 6-7. Horns are looking for win number three in their current winning streak. The Wildcats want to avoid a two game losing streak. KSU does have a two game road winning streak going in conference. KSU is 3-3 in road games while Texas is 4-2 at home.

    Kansas State Wildcats (15-10; 6-7)
Peyton Williams (#11, 6-4 Jr. F) and Kayla Goth (#10, 6-1 Sr. G) give the Wildcats a potent outside-inside scoring punch. Williams is the leading scorer at 14.8 ppg while Goth adds 13.2 ppg. Next are Christianna Carr (#43, 6-1 Fr. G) with an average of 8.7 ppg and Rachel Ranke (#12, 6-1 Soph. G) who chips in 8.5 ppg. Kali Jones (#15, 6-2 Sr. F) hits 60% (30-50) from the field while Ashley Ray (#33, 6-4 Soph. C) makes 52.6% (8-18). Those two lead the team in FG%. Williams (74-169; 43.8%), Goth (60-154; 39%), Ranke (37-125; 29.6%) and Carr (38-113; 33.6%) are the top volume shooters for KSU. Jasauen Beard (#25, 5-10 RS Jr. F) is the fifth most likely to take a shot (29-88; 33%). With eight of the ten Big 12 teams averaging about 34% or better from BTA in their total shots attempted, KSU is right in line with their 34.2% of all shots taken from BTA. Their four top 3pt shooters are Ranke (25-88; 28.4%), Carr (21-69; 30.4%), Goth (9-34; 26.5%) and Williams (11-34; 32.4%). Three Wildcats average at least three FTs per game with Williams the top FT shooter by % (34-41; 82.9%). Goth has the most FTs made and attempted (43-57; 75.4%). Beard (26-42; 61.9%) completes the trio of Wildcats that seem to have a way to get to the FT line. Jones (12-16; 75%) is one of three KSU players that make over 70% of their FTs.

Williams is the top rebounder in the league at 9.5 rpg. Goth is second at 3.8 rpg. Beard (3.7 rpg) and Jones (3.4 rpg) are the only others over 3 rpg. Which explains why KSU is ninth in the league in rebounding, only 0.1 rpg better than last place Kansas. Goth tops the league in assists with her average of 7.0 apg (91 total). Only Williams with 1.6 apg and Ranke at 1.3 apg average more than 0.8 apg (Carr). Five players average at least two TOs per game: Goth (44; 3.4 TOPG; 2.1 A/TO ratio), Beard (29; 2.2 TOPG), Carr (28; 2.2 TOPG), Williams (28; 2.2 TOPG) and Ranke (27; 2.1 TOPG). Williams (27 steals; 2.1 spg) and Goth (24 steals; 1.8 spg) top five players with double digit steals. Williams’ 15 blocks is the best on the team. No other player has more than Jones’ six blocks.

Williams, Goth, Carr and Ranke have nailed won four of the five starting slots. Beard (2 starts), Jones (7 starts) and Ray (4 starts) have split the final starting spot. Jones has gotten the call to start the last five games. Eleven players have seen action in Big 12 games for the Wildcats. Seven have appeared in all 13 league games while two others have gotten into 12 games. Goth (38.4 mpg), Williams (36.4 mpg) and Ranke (32.9 mpg) are counted on to play heavy minutes every game. Carr (28.9 mpg), Beard (22.0 mpg), Jones (19.7 mpg), Ray (9.8 mpg), Laura Macke (#13, 6-2 Fr. F; 9.6 mpg) and Savannah Simmons (#1, 6-1 Fr. G; 4.0 mpg) make up the core of nine players that have appeared in at least 12 league games. Alisa Wiggins (#5, 5-8 Soph. G) has seen ten minutes of action in five games.

    Texas Longhorns (20-5; 10-3)
Three of the Horns’ leading scorers are averaging in double digits. Sug (15.1 ppg), Joyner (12.4 ppg) and Danni (11.7 ppg) top the team in scoring. Sug is the only Horn making at least 50% of her shots at 53.6%. Six Horns are averaging at least 40% from the field, bracketed by Jatarie’s 49.5% and Danni’s 41.7%. Joyner has taken the most shots (65-142) while Sug has made the most FGs (74-138). Danni remains among the in the league with her 46.3% from BTA on 31 of 67 threes. Sug is the next best 3pt shooter by percentage at 38.5% (10-26) while Destiny has hit 30% of her treys (12-40). Olamide (9-9; 100%) and Charli (26-29; 89.7%) top six players that are making at least 70% of their FTs.

Joyner at 7.1 rpg leads a group of seven players that average at least 3.2 rpg. Jatarie (5.5 rpg) and Sug (5.4 rpg) are the second and third leading rebounders. With 70 assists, Sug has 12 more than the next three players combined: Danni (23), Joyner (19) and Destiny (16). Jada and Jataire, with nine assists each, are poised to join the double digit assist group. Seven players have reached double digits in TOs. Joyner (53 TOs; 4.1 TOPG) and Sug (46 TOs; 3.5 TOPG) are at the top of the group. Sug does have a 1.5 A/TO ratio, ninth in the conference, even though her TOs are the second most among the top 13 players in A/TO ratio. By comparison, Joyner’s A/TO ratio is currently 0.4. Definitely something she needs to work on. Charli’s last block came against WVU on Jan. 28, five games ago. Still, her seven blocks in conference play continue to lead the Horns. Jatarie is second with six blocks while Joyner is third with four. Jada has three blocks while both Olamide and Danni chip in with one block each. That gives Texas 22 blocks in conference games, good enough of last in the conference at 1.7 bpg. OU also has 22 blocks but in 12 games so their average is 1.8 bpg. Kansas is the only other Big 12 with less than 40 blocks at 24 (2.0 bpg). Four Horns have gotten at least 10 steals, led by Joyner with 16 and with Danni’s 12 at the end. Destiny is poised to make that a group of five with her current nine steals.

Danni (35.9 mpg) and Sug (34.5 mpg) are the backcourt duo that seldom come out. Seven other Horns are in double digit minutes. Joyner (24.4 mpg), Destiny (24.2 mpg), Jada (22.2 mpg) and Jatarie (21.3 mpg) comprise the four averaging at least 20 plus mpg. In the teens are Charli (12.8 mpg), Olamide (12.5 mpg) and Audrey (11.7 mpg). Joanne is at 6.1 mpg. Charli continues to increase her mpg while Audrey has seen her minutes decline a bit since coming back from her injury. Destiny has joined Sug, Danni, Joyner and Jatarie in the starting lineup the last two games. Seven Horns have at least five starts with Sug, Danni and Joyner having started all 13 league games to date.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.

Surprisingly, not one of our posts had an above average game against KSU in the last meeting with Joyner (4-11 FGs, 8 pts & 5 rebs) and Jatarie (3-7 FGs, 8 pts & 8 rebs) being the most productive. Like with OSU’s Jones, our posts will need to chase Williams out to the 3pt line. They left Jones open four times and she nailed 3 3pters. Williams will do the same if given the opening. I would expect both Joyner and Charli take turns shadowing Williams throughout the game. The experience against Jones should help them. All of our four posts are capable of having solid games in the paint offensively. Besides Willliams, a strong offensive player inside and outside, Jones and Ray provide KSU with a big presence inside. It will be a challenging game for the Texas posts on both ends.

KSU will have a definite height advantage on the perimeter with Wiggins (5-8 G) and Beard (5-10 F) the only players shorter than 6-1 on the perimeter. However, KSU was unable to stop Danni (4-9 from BTA), Sug (2-5 from BTA) and Destiny (1-2 from BTA) from combining for 7 of 16 from BTA. I doubt that it will be any easier this time. However, Carr took advantage of the attention on Goth and Ranke to nail 4-7 from BTA in the last game. KSU was 11-19 from BTA. Horns will need to do a better job closing down the 3pt line.

    STATS COMPARISON—Big 12 stats only.

    Screenshot (138).png
    Screenshot (139).png

    Screenshot (140).png

Both teams combine to take a shot every twenty seconds. They did the same in their first meeting. The problem for Texas in the first game was that KSU made 54% of their shots while Texas was only making 44%. KSU kept up with the Horns on the boards, an area that Texas needs to dominate. Nor can Texas have KSU make 11-19 threes.

On paper, Texas should win this game handily. Of course, on paper, Texas should have won the game in Manhattan, KS but they lost 69-87. Horns will need to slow down Williams, especially from BTA where she was 3-4. That’s a big chore for Joyner and Charli who also have to make Williams work defending on the other end. Our guards will need to guard the 3pt line while getting their own open looks from BTA. I look for KSU to use a zone, primarily a 2-3 to force Texas to settle for outside shots. Horns will need to penetrate the zone, either by driving or passing to the seams for a short jumper. The ability of the Texas guards to drive and pull up for a short jumper will be critical to opening up the zone for the 3pters and for the posts.

This will be the “Wear Pink” game for Texas as it is their annual Shoot for a Cure game.

This team is hard to watch. We need an assistant who can teach offense.

well, I think we can pretty much write off hosting this year.

Bad loss at a poor time. We got nothing inside from Jatarie and Joyner. They went 3-13 from the field and got to the FT line twice.

Guess KSU has our number this year. Hope we don't run into them in the Big 12 tournament.

Joyner's decision making on both ends is perplexing to watch at times.

Oh, well. Guess the fight for second is the real race here.

Bad loss. Coach Aston needs to bring in an offensive assistant like the other poster said. It’s embarrassing to lose to a team that’s less talented.

It’s really not that complicated. KSU played 2-3 zone. Texas stood around passing the ball on the perimeter and never busted the zone. Not a single adjustment that we could see in the second half. This team is average - in an average league (outside of Baylor).
Baylor is a loss and I’m skeptical if they can beat Iowa State at home based on today’s performance.
But softball seems to be rolling :)

At 25 seconds left in the 3rd, we had the ball. Instead of waiting for the last shot, Warren throws into the 8th row. Goth hits a 3 with 1 second to go to cut a 4 point lead to one. KSU grabbed the momentum. It was over beginning the 4th.

Don't know what Aston's instructions were, but that was the kill shot.

    OUTCOACHED! AGAIN!

Coach Aston will you please go and study film on how to bust a 2-3 zone? It is not that difficult. And just like you make your players sit on the bench until they accept your process and play your defense, you should sit on the bench until you learn how to teach your team how to bust a zone. SMH!!!

Yes, I'm a little frustrated today. Geez!

What was the shooting percentage from 3? It’s pretty hard to bust a zone if you don’t shoot it well from the perimeter.

Those long scoring droughts are excruciating to watch. To blow a 3rd-quarter double-digit lead and lose by nine is pretty painful.

IMO we need a head coach who can actually coach, and who can hire knowledgeable and capable assistants and LISTEN TO THEM.

Agree. And against a zone, you HAVE to have ball reversal. We hear Coach talk about it over and over. I saw several times where Jatarie, Joyner or Charli were posting hard, and never got the ball. That's on the guards. Whether they're able to shoot or not, at least a pass inside can get the reversal started if they have to throw it back out.

Unacceptable. No adjustments by the head coach. Kids checked out. Those who want to say that "kids gotta play" clearly don't understand that kids not executing is the coach's fault. Period. Can't be a tier 1 program unless you adjust. Nobody in the stands. Fans disconnected. Uninspired performance. Bad assistants. All signs of a program in trub. Bellyache all you want but a change needs to be made. Sheesh.

Look, whatever the faults of the coaching, personnel play a big role.
Our guards shot 14 of 40 tonight, mainly because Shug was 2 for 10. Williams and Littleton actually had a pretty good shooting night; but there never seems to be a night when all the guards are clicking together.
Our Bigs shot only 7 of 23. Homes and White were 3 of 13; and they were supposed to be our big advantage.
60 points against K-State is absurd.
I'm sure there are many valid criticisms of our staff's tactical and motivational faults; but frankly our players don't look as good to me as the best kids I see playing for top ten teams. We simply do not have stars. We were supposed to, but we don't. We do not have a dangerous take charge scorer. Everybody has waited for Holmes to assume that role, but she hasn't and probably won't.
I hope Sedona and Collier stick around, that Higgs returns and Warren matures, and that we get a shot in the shooting arm from the recruits arriving in 2019. We will need it.

But we have a team of McDonald’s All-Americans. Why don’t they look as good as the best players on the top teams? We are recruiting some of the best players in the country. What’s happening to them once they get on campus?

The reason you see other top ten teams with so called stars is that those coaches actually DEVELOPED them. That is what you do at this level. It doesn't just miraculously happen. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT is one of the biggest parts of collegiate sports. Occasionally, you get players who shine anyway. However, look at the recruits Iowa State, W. Virginia, etc. get. Both Iowa State and W. Virginia don't get anywhere near the talent we do in recruiting. Vic Schaefer lost FOUR starters last year, AND he lost another starter this year in Bibby who was playing very very well. But he continues to DEVELOP his players and they are sitting in first place in the SEC. Hell, look at Jeff Mittie. Check out the rankings of his recruits yet he swept us this year........

I believe money could have been better spent on an offensive minded assistant coach when Tina accepted the job at VA. Coach A knows she hasn't mastered the offense. Go and get some help.

I thought about this while I was watching the ESPN show and they were talking about all the great coaching tandem duos and they mentioned Blair and Vic. Now Vic is doing the daggum thang!!! That's what Coach A needs an offensive mind genius to go with her awesome defense skills. Man she has the means to build a POWERHOUSE staff. Stop hiring TX exes and let's go get some real coaching talent to go along with your defense.

I still say Shea Ralph at UCONN. She probably won't leave UCONN but I sure would offer her the Executive VP of Offense role. Yep, I just made up a title. LOL!!

And I know Becky Hammon wants to coach pro but offer her the EVPO role.

:deadhorse:Rant, here: Fully expecting us to lose 2 or 3 of the remaining 4 games. We may win one in the B12 tournament and one game in the NCAAs, if we get a sympathy seeding. The team has mentally checked out - they don't seem to play for the coaches or for each other, and it shows. They play as though they want the game to end as soon as possible, with not much enthusiasm and joy, and they collapse when things go bad - 4th quarter yesterday, for example. We can blame coaching, player development, blah, blah ... but the players simply don't play. Huge deficits in fundamental skills - can't make a put-back, grip a rebound, regularly bounce passes off the knees of the Bigs. I'm tired of these don't-give-a-crap games. And, saddened, of course. (The men seem to have the same problems.) If this is a bad year, let's hope things get better. If there is a systemic problem, CdC will take care of it.:hookem:

You're not going to shoot well when you're confused by a coach who has PROVEN she has no clue regarding execution in the half court particularly against an active zone. If we can't rebound and run, or force turnovers then we struggle because we're too heavily dependent on the transition game to score.

It's been that way the entire seven years -- different players, different assistants, same head coach. The writing is on the wall and has been for several seasons. If anyone thinks Travis Mays would rather be a HC in a no-win situation at SMU than to be AHC at his alma mater they're kidding themselves. She doesn't listen to her assistants, she constantly gripes at them, and she runs the good ones off. I truly believe she's threatened by anyone with more actual COACHING knowledge or who the players relate to better than her.

Her entire persona wreaks of negative energy... And it shows in her program on several levels from the players, to the staff, to the way she engages (or doesn't rather) opposing coaches during traditional post-game hand shakes. All one has to do is sit back and pay attention.

We need to snap out of the whole cognitive dissonance. She's not the answer... and not ever GOING to be. The question is how far CdC is willing to let things slide towards the crapper before doing something about it. Hopefully he won't allow it to go too close to the edge or even all the way into it, because there's not only Baylor to be concerned with but other very well-coached teams in the Big 12... and then there's a couple on the rise if anyone's really paying attention. We could easily be leap-frogged into a perrenial middle-of-the-pack team in the Big 12 if a prompt change isn't made. Time is of the essence.

True! You don't bust a zone by just dribbling around the perimeter and lazily passing the ball around the horn, then launching it up from downtown. When you do that you're actually doing exactly what the defense WANTS you to do.

You got to have movement, overloads, baseline runs, ball fakes, swings, attacking the seams (ie high post, short corners, etc.),post touches, and QUICK reversals to get the defense moving and out of position. You have to attack a zone with PURPOSE... hard to do when you don't understand that.
