#19/19 Texas (20-5; 10-4) will host NR/NR Texas Tech (12-13; 3-11) in an 11 AM Saturday game. After losing 10 of 11 games to start league play, the Lady Raiders have won two of the last three, including their last game against Kansas in Lawrence. Texas, on the other hand, started out winning seven of the first eight before going 3-3 the last six games, including a home loss against KSU last time out. Horns have a 72-29 edge in the overall series and a 26-22 record in Big 12 games which includes a 3-2 edge in the Big 12 tournament. Texas has won 11 in row with their win earlier this season. Texas has won five home games in row against Tech. The Horns will be going for their sixth straight home win against Tech on Saturday. Texas Tech Lady Raiders (12-13; 3-11) Tech has two scorers in the top 15 and a total of four in the top 30 in the league. Chrislyn Carr (#5, 5-5 Fr. G) is the top freshman scorer in league games at 16.2 ppg. Brittany Brewer (#20, 6-5 Jr. F) is second on the team at 13.6 ppg. Sydney Goodson (#2, 5-8 Soph. G) and Erin DeGrate (#1, 6-6 Jr. C) add 10.6 and 10.4 ppg, respectively. DeGrate (61-122; 50%) and Brewer (81-177; 45.8%) have the highest FG% of players that have taken at least ten shots. Zuri Sanders (#30, 6-0 Sr. F) has the third highest FT% at 38.3% (23-60). Among that group of players, no one else is making over 38%. Carr (77-254; 30.3%) has taken the most shots on the team. Goodson is 47 of 132 (35.6%) from the field with her 3pt% of 34.9% on 30 of 86 treys topping the Lady Raiders. 115 of Carr’s shots have come from BTA. She has connected on 29 threes (25.2%). Brewer is the other effective 3pt shooter at 31.4% (16-51). Angel Hayden (#23, 5-6 Soph. G), Eryka Sidney (#3, 5-6 Jr. G) and Mia Castaneda (#0, 5-6 Jr. G) all have taken at least half of their shots from BTA. Four of the ten players have taken no more than eight FTs while Carr (44-53; 83%), DeGrate (44-53; 46%), Sanders (29-48; 60.4%), Hayden (29-48; 60.5%), Goodson (25-32; 78.1%) and Brewer (12-22; 54.5%) are the ones taking the most FTs for Tech. Brewer (7.4 rpg) and DeGrate (7.0 rpg) give Tech a strong rebounding presence in the post but the leading rebounder is Sanders at 9.2 rpg. Goodson provides solid rebounding from the backcourt at 6.1 rpg. The Lady Raiders have six players averaging at least 1.4 apg with Carr (3.8 apg), Goodson (2.5 apg) and Sanders (2.3 rpg) at the top of the group. Tech is ninth in TOPG. Seven players have double digit TOs, ranging from Carr’s 55 to Sidney’s 15. Five of the seven have at least 30 TOs. Only four players have a block for Tech. Brewer has 27, DeGrate 14 and Goodson and Sanders two each. Eight of the ten have at least four steals with Carr and Sanders at the top with 23 steals each and Goodson a step behind with 22 steals. Tech has a core of seven players that have played in at least 13 games each. Castaneda has seen action in eight games. The core seven consists of Carr, Brewer, Goodson, DeGrate, Sanders, Hayden and Sydney. All seven average at least 16 mpg. Goodson (37.9 mpg), Carr (34.1 mpg), Sanders (32.8 mpg) and Brewer (30.6 mpg) log the most minutes. Carr and Brewer have started all fourteen games with Sanders having started all 13 games she played in. Goodson has 12 starts in 14 games. Eight players have at least two starts. Tech also has Tihana Stojsavljevic (#5), a 6-3 Soph. F, that they can also put in against the Texas posts. Texas Longhorns (20-5; 10-3) Texas counters with the Big 12’s #12 scorer (Sug, 14.4 ppg), #21 (Joyner, 11.9 ppg) and #22 (Danni, 11.9 ppg). The number four and five scorers for Texas are Jatarie (9.0 ppg) and Destiny (8.4 ppg). Those five have all taken at least 100 shots in league play. The next two have only taken 49 (Charli) and 48 (Olamide). Horns rank third in the league in FG% because seven of their ten players average at least 41% from the field. Sug has the best FG% at 51.4% on 76 of 146 FGs. Jatarie has the second best FG% at 47.7% (53-111) while Joyner has hit 67 of 149 for 45% from the field. The Horns have the second best 3pt FG% in the Big 12 at 36.6%, .001 behind ISU and .002 ahead of WVU. However, their 191 3pters attempted are next to last in the league and one of only two teams with less than 230 3pters attempted. Danni is the big gun from BTA for Texas, hitting 35 of 75 treys for 46.7%. That percentage is second in the league by .001 to ISU’s Kristen Scott. Her 35 3pters made are second to Tynice Martin of WVU by one. Destiny (15-46; 32.6%) and Sug (10-30; 33.3%) are the other primary 3pt shooters for the Horns in league play. Joyner (29-54; 53.7%; 3.9 FTA per game) and Sug (40-50; 80%; 3.6 FTA per game) are the best at getting to the FT line. Charli (29-35; 82.9%; 2.7 FTA per game), Destiny (25-33; 75.8%; 2.4 FTA per game), Danni (21-30; 70%; 2.1 FTA per game) and Jatarie (20-26; 76.9%; 1.9 FTA per game) all get to the FT line at least a couple of times per game with pretty results. Seven Horns are grabbing at least 3.2 rpg with Joyner’s 6.9 rpg topping the group. Jatarie (5.7 rpg) and Sug (5.3 rpg) provide strong support on the boards. Sug’s 79 assists (5.6 apg) are more than the next three players that have reached double digit assists: Danni (24), Joyner (22) and Destiny (16). Five players are averaging at least 1.6 TOPG with Joyner (4.0 TOPG) and Sug (3.4 TOPG) at the top. Charli leads with seven blocks in 13 games while Jatarie is second with 6 blocks in 14 games. Horns are last in the league in total blocks (22) and blocks per game (1.6). Joyner (17 steals), Sug (16 steals), Jada (13 steals) and Danni (12 steals) are the top four ball hawks on the team. Sug, Joyner, Danni, Jatarie and Destiny have started the last three games. Sug, Danni and Joyner have started all fourteen league games while Jatarie has nine starts and Destiny eight. Olamide has played in all fourteen games with five starts while Jada has six starts in fourteen games. All ten players have seen action in league play with only the frosh not getting into every game. Charli has played in 13 games, Joanne in 12 and Audrey in ten. Danni (36.0 mpg) and Sug (34.5 mpg) continue to log the most minutes on the team. They also have the best Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) on the team with eFG%s of .545 and .547, respectively. Nine of the players are averaging in double digits minutes of at least 11 mpg. I do expect the three frosh, especially Charli, to get more playing time in these next few games than usual. LINEUPS Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups. Tech will usually put a combination of two from Sanders, Brewer and DeGrate on the floor. Brewer will present Texas with a capable 3pt shooter when she is on the court. Neither Sanders (0-2 from BTA all season) nor DeGrate (zero 3pters attempted all season) are threats from BTA. But Sanders can nail the midrange shot as well as drive to the basket while DeGrate is going to overpower most other posts inside. Brewer can make shots in the paint as well as pop out to the perimeter for a three pointer. Horns can’t lose track of Brewer when she is in the game nor can they be hesitant to follow her out to the 3pt line. Whichever Texas post matchups up with Sanders will have a height advantage unless Texas goes small with either Jada or Audrey. Taking advantage inside should allow the Texas posts to prosper. Tech’s three posts (Brewer, DeGrate & Sanders ) combined for 15 rebs, 27 pts (10-24 FGs), 3 blocks and 4 TOs. Texas’ four posts (Jatarie, Joyner, Olamide & Charli) combined for 22 rebs, 29 pts (11-31 FGs), 3 blocks and 2 TOs. Texas will need more than 35% from the field from its posts, especially since no 3pters were taken by them. Carr and Goodson will be the primary 3pt threats for the Texas guards to cover on the perimeter. Goodson, especially, is more likely to shoot a 3pter than a two. Carr is split almost half and half on her shot selection. Statistically, Tech has both the worse 3pt defense and offense in the league. However, they hit 12-28 (42.9%) in the game in Lubbock. Horns can’t allow Carr (5-10) and Goodson (3-4) to go off again. Danni and Destiny were the only Horns to attempt a 3pter against Tech with each going 2-4 from BTA. Charli might not play much more than the 14 minutes she logged in Lubbock but she should be more effective as she appears more settled in and comfortable with each game. STATS COMPARISON—Big 12 stats only. Both teams like to run although Tech is more reliant on the 3pt shot than is Texas. Horns were not slowed down by KSU’s 2-3 zone in the number of shots they were able to put up. What it did was force some poor shots from outside as well keep Texas from getting to the FT line. Tech is likely to also present a zone for Texas to work against although it may not be the same type as KSU used so effectively in their two games against the Horns. One advantage that Texas has is their ability to hit a better percentage from the field, from BTA and from the FT line than the Lady Raiders. Of course, Tech shot better than they normally did in the last meeting between the two. Tech is actually outrebounding Texas although the Horns have a better rebounding margin than does Tech. Tech used their ability to hit threes to stay in the first game while Texas relied on FT shooting to pull out the game. Tech is going to get off their threes. The question will be if Texas can force some of those to be poor shots instead of wide open looks. One thing Texas cannot do is look ahead to Monday’s game in Waco. Tech is capable of taking advantage of any lack of focus on the Horns’ part. Game time is a morning tipoff at 11 AM on Saturday. One bad pass early in the game, four missed FTs were the only negatives I saw from Joyner. She was awesome otherwise. Best game so far this season. One could say the same about Charli. 6-12 from the field, 2-3 from the FT line, top rebounder with seven. Outstanding game from those two. Danni also had a very good game, 6-9 from the field, 3-5 from BTA. Nice to dominate when Sug has a sub par game. Our three frosh played quite a bit and all did well. Joanne had to play a lot early and often due to foul trouble for Sug and an injury to Destiny that kept her out for some time in the first half. Enjoy it for a few hours, get ready for Baylor. Great management of the minutes by KA, especially considering the quick turnaround for Baylor on Monday. The turnovers and free throws are going to have to be cleaned up.
