    Hey Guys:

Just been taking note of all the exceptional talent we are now adding to the football team through the PWO program. I would really like to see a comprehensive listing of all PWO's (Preferred Walk-On's we have offered).

I think it is also important to give these guys (all Walk-On players...some are not Freshmen but have been here prior but still on the current roster as best I can tell) some KUDOS and some Recognition...so in line with that thought here's what I have come up with so far.

To get the ball started here is the best listing I have been able to come up with so far...please feel free to add any you are aware of as well as their info.

I haven't paid much attention to the PWO program.....do these players have a better "deal" than a regular walk on? Are their limits to the number of PWOs in a recruiting cycle?

From what I can find "PWOs" are guaranteed a spot on the team when camp starts, whereas other walk-ons have to try out to earn their spot. I don't believe there is any limit during a typical cycle, but the team can only be made up of 105 players, so usually 85 scholarship players and 20 other walk-on type individuals.

I really do not know what if any benefits the PWO's get, but I believe the do get their meals but have to pay for their own tuition and rooming. If anyone has information on this please post it as it would be good to know what benefits these guys get.

Some of these guys can play. Maybe this is the long term solution to improving special teams as these guys will be on campus for 4 years and can specialize towards special team play.

i'd guess the PWO guarantee allows them to plan for the athletic dorm also, even if they have to pay.

I know it is just my own ingrained, inbreed prejudice, but when I hear "JUCO transfer", in my mind that is code for "problems with the law and academics". When I hear "Walk On Program", in my mind that is code for "decades of Devany/Osborne outlaw recruiting".

    Sorry. Carry on.

Not just you, but these things have changed. I think of "head case" for any transfer but its become the new MO.

Right! I think we're both kinda old school in that regard, yelladawg. But, times are changing. Guess we gotta go with the flow. :hookem::bevo:

It's slightly different now. Many do go to JUCO because of academics, but if they get good enough grades after two years to qualify then I don't have a problem. Many also go that route when they don't get the offer they want out of HS. They would rather take a chance at a quality JUCO program to develop than spend 4 years at a lower level school. DII doesn't even allow scholarships so DIII or NAIA may not appeal to them. After two years they may not get the offer they want but could still go the smaller school route.

For DI programs they take a player with two years of proven development and academic success so really they get someone ready to plug in without paying for them for two years. It also opens up a spot on the team for two years while that player is at another school.

I'm glad the wizard made it cool to pick from the juco ranks.

For me, my over generalization is that PWO is the opposite of cheating whatever. It's legacy, good kid, who can afford college in his own, but probably won't see the field.

Preferred walk-ons are not on scholarship, and there is no limit to how many there are. They do not count against the scholarshipped number of players. They are allowed all the same benefits of a scholarship player (meals, training table, travel expenses, training and weight room privileges, etc), but they pay for their own tuition, books, and university fees. Often the coaching staff can pull strings to help with admission into their college, if that’s an issue.

And now when I hear "Grad Transfer", I think of smart guys from places like Rice and UC-Berkeley who play good enough to start for us right off the bat.

More like Osborne's community program without the steroids and with 20-25 players instead of 100-125.

Whatever it sounds like, I'm extremely happy Tom Herman is running this program with a brain. Things like the walk-on program, Texas Forever, are difference makers to the program. I'm glad we are doing it and hope it brings huge success.
