What will it take for Shaka to survive this year?

Holy crap we're top 25 in every single other sport?

Now you know why CDC is always seen with a big, infectious grin.

It's good to be the king.

It can be hard to keep your rule, but I think he embraces the pressure of that ---- and wants to show everyone that Texas can do even better.

Lucking into Herman and Pierce helps. But IMHO every story of greatness has one or more subplots of luck somewhere.

Not only that, baseball at 23rd is early, they've already climbed to 17, and remember they were in the CWS last year.

Beyond that, track and field at 25, meh, but almost all of the others aren't just top 25, they're top 10 or close to it.

It's good to be the king/queen.

    Hook 'em.

What makes you think those hires were luck?

Smart should have already been fired in my opinion. I didn't agree with Barnes being fired. Tennessee was #1 for most of the season this year. We won't make the dance unless we win the conference tournament. I don't see how he survives this season with his job. Just my $0.02.

Just the same, I am still not 100% sold on Herman either. Horns still had four losses last year and actually all four of them were winnable games. Just sayin.

Even a little luck in those hires. Why?

What if neither were available at the time Texas needed to fill those positions?

A bit of luck that they hadn't just taken similar higher profile positions at other schools above where they were.

Lucky for us they were at Tulane and Houston instead of just having been hired at say, Florida and UCLA or something like that.

Doesn't suggest Texas didn't just roll the dice with blinders on and trust to luck that Pierce and Herman were the best choices for Texas at the time.

??? So the universe just aligned and they fell in our lap? Looking at what CDC has accomplished here and at TCU there is little luck involved. He probably has a top 2 or 3 target list in every sport at all times in a notebook or laptop somewhere that is constantly being updated. If not Herman or Pierce it would have been someone else. He seems to be a solid evaluator of everything, not just talent so when it's time for Shaka to be replaced I'm convinced we'll be pretty happy with the hire he makes.

Was Herman a CdC hire? I thought Perrin closed that deal, but I may be remembering wrong. Still CdC was instrumental in working with Herman on necessary upgrades.

By any objective basketball measure, Smart should be given his walking papers, no improvement either individually by the players or as a team or in the coaching (game plan and more importantly in game adjustments of which there don’t seem to be any). The only saving thread for Smart is the financial commitment of the stupid contract Powers handed out.

If Smart stays, I’m guessing next year looks the same as this year and the year before. Hayes will leave (why should he stay for this crap). The team may be a little better as Baker should be an upgrade over osetkowski, but Smart will still be in over his head against the other coaches in the league.

    Boss,

At the time that the deal was cut with Herman, Mike was the AD.

Strong & Smart were part of the Billie Powers "Build My Legacy" campaign.

We are living proof that Chris takes care of his own. How many TCU coaches have turned us down for various positions?

Ok, as pointed out Herman was hired before CDC and now I recall we threw money at the highest profile target. Maybe there was luck in that because it happened so fast I'm not sure anyone really evaluated anything.

Smart should join Roach on indefinite leave. Three or four players stand like statutes on the offensive end while whoever winds up with the ball goes one on five. Zero defensive rebounding leads to a blown 17 point lead against bailor. Seriously, smart should not be allowed to go back to Austin.

Not to nit pick, but they blew a 19 point lead to end up now in OT.

And are in the process of blowing a six point lead in overtime. Not sure what their aversion is to grabbing a defensive rebound.

Fire him tonight. What a wretched attempt to steal defeat from the jaws of victory. No situational purpose and horrible position coaching. A throw in to Hayes who travels the game away. Way to play, guys.

Wow. Just crapped the bed tonight.

Texas had a 19 point lead at one point. 17 point lead with about 10 minutes to go.

    Not good Shaka. Not good

Not to mention the last play with 3 seconds left. Heave the ball to the opposite 3-point line???? Only one guy tried to help on the in bound. Terrible.

Texas only had the lead because it was shooting lights out. The loss is on bad coaching and bad situational playing.

    That was an epic collapse

I was never exactly sure what cosmic wrong Steve Patterson was trying to make us pay for with those 2 coach hires, but his mission has to be about complete by now

How does an elite basketball star, Hayes, take an in bounds pass with a 1 point lead and 7 seconds left in the game and just start walking in circles....how about f'ing dribble the damn ball?!?!! After Baylor gets the ball back and takes the lead we have 3 seconds left, what's the plan? Throw the ball all the way down the court in the scrum for a jump ball. Surprise, it didn't work. Fire Shaka now!!!

Smart, and then his team, goes brain dead in the second half to blow a big lead. Again. And again. And again. The guy seems to exude choking. And his team gets the choke attitude by osmosis from him. 19 point lead with 15 min. to play--blown.

And the last play of regulation, where Coleman drives and gets off a poor shot, SMH. Why not drive and dish to a big--Hayes, who was in position to take the dish. But no, that would have involved a play of some sort--sort of like the first two plays in overtime where Hayes scored. Smart doesn't know how to finish. He cannot teach the team to finish.

Or how about holding the ball and forcing a foul. Hayes is a decent foul shooter.

50% FG and 55% 3point and we still lose. You're right the only reason we we're in it is that we made every other shot. Got lucky this game to be in it.

That "offense" is putrid. It's literally Coleman and Febres passing back and forth for 15-20 seconds while everyone else just stands around. One of those two penetrate to either shoot or pop it back out for a three or more dribbling until there is no time left when a bad shot is jacked up. Either way usually ONE guy goes in for the rebound against two or three defenders. Shaka is literally relying on the skill and athletic ability the players arrived with when they recruited to win games. Sometimes they fall and sometimes they don't. There's no real offense and no plan at all. He's getting paid millions to stand on the sideline and then get on the post game and give some crap philosophical answer about kids. UGH!!!

Looks to me like we pulled the football equivalent of coaches who are ahead like 24-10 at the start of the 4th, and then only call 2 or 3 passes the entire 4th quarter and mostly just run up the middle over and over. And then they never even cross midfield, and the other team comes back and ties the game at 24 by the end. We seemed to care more about burning clock then about keeping our lead once we got up big, which led to a 19-2 Baylor run.

He's not an elite basketball star based on mastery of the fundamentals, but based on height and athleticism. I'll blame Shaka for a lot, but Hayes has a lot of issues with stuff that he should have had down pat before he ever got to college.

They announced over and over he is a lottery pick. A player has to have more than athleticism to be a lottery pick if that turns out to be true. I think it's day to day and week to week lack of coaching which results in scatterbrain plays like that. I bet a good high school coach would have him playing better that he is now.

Well, If BU (ugh, I hate to give the bu coach any kudos, but...), or the guy at TTU, or KSU, or ISU, or KU (obviously), or wvu, or tcu were here with this talent, we'd already have secured a NCAA birth. and a seed no worse than 7.

We'd have at least five more wins.
