FWIW, the top UT legendary coach, DKR, suffered his boo birds as well.

He had his mid 60s slump between the first MNC, went 6-4, 7-4, 6-4 before the Worster Bunch came in, the wishbone, another MNC, and though I was too young to really know then what was going on, I read long time after that the cigars got a bit uneasy during this period.

Then, after the 2nd MNC, Switzer took over HC from his OC position at OU and gave Royal fits. Royal never beat Switzer, lost to him from 1971-75, only finally getting a tie in 1976. Worse was the 1973 Texas OU game, Texas lost 52-13.

Finally, 1976, tied OU 6-6, lost to Tceh, lost to UH 30-0 in Austin, lost to aggy, going into the final game of the season 4-5-1, beating piggy, UH Broyles' last game, and as we found out officially shortly after the game, DKR's last at Texas, securing an achievement that he'd never had a losing season at Texas.

But his face showed him to be maybe 20 years older than his actual age. The buzzards were circling above, with other carrion eaters on the fences surrounding Memorial Stadium.

Point being, even the coach who permanently, or seminally at least, established UT Longhorn football as a national elite, when slipping in the W/L columns, still have a boss, or bosses, to answer to.

Sat. AM there will be a lot of UT fans traveling to the game that will not know about I-35 shutdown / detour until too late.... suspect many will arrive late to the game.

Thanks for the great perspective! I'm hard on Mack but see from your post that even the great DKR went through hard times...

OU won the Big XII outright in 2010 (beat Nebraska in the Big XII Championship Game) & beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in 2013 (Mack’s final season at Texas). And the Big East was a P6 conference at the time when OU beat Big East Champs UConn in the Fiesta Bowl in 2010. You tried to too finely split hairs there.

As far as Mack goes, I always liked him as a person & respected him as a darn fine football coach. I just thought OU’s coach was better. I wish Mack a great deal of success at UNC.

I love Mack, but upon the news he’s going “air raid” Garrett Gilbert spit out his drink.

In 2018, Phil Longo's offense at Ole Miss ranked No. 9 in total offense, No. 7 in yards per play, No. 5 in pass yards per game and were No. 2 behind ou for most plays of 30+ yards.

2017 was not quite the same but was still very good. However his schemes always seems to get bogged down in the red zone. They settle for field goals way too often.

" .... The offense came under fire recently in NFL scouting circles when A.J. Brown said in an interview that they have a play simply called “get open,” in which there was no structure or route concepts whatsoever. The lack of a diverse route tree was certainly part of the red-zone struggles. When the field shrinks, you can’t run the vertical routes that the offense is built around....."

He appears to have made two great coordinator hires. He is also already pulling in recruits. It will be interesting to see how quickly he can get them turned around. He still has his work cut out for him following back-to-back 9 loss seasons.

Our OL mostly sucked from 2011-2013. Although I don't know if that's Searels' fault or not.

Nope. I would not take that bet given his history with FSU (and OU).

They're in different divisions. Given Mack's age they may only play once or twice in his second go around.

I bet he does a hell of a lot better than Fedora, and Texas just hired Fedora.

The guy many wanted to replace Mack Brown is now an assistant at Texas and was replaced by...Mack Brown.

Mack created a monster program at Carolina in the 90's. Oklahoma made two strong runs to get him after they ran off Gibbs in 1994, and then after Schnellenberger's cameo appearance in 1995. We were able to get him due to the ignorance of the UNC AD and Dodds proving to him that Sally could make as much money in Austin as she was in Chapel Hill.

He had those 11-1 seasons, and could never beat Florida State. Guess what? Not a lot of folks were.

I hope the guy sets the place on fire! As Sabre has said several times, Mack united the many factions of the fan base. A feat that no one else could do. He then created a frenzy at the box office. Put a great product on the field. And allowed us to Smell The Roses.

    Good luck Coach!
