Could be my favorite WR ever on the 40 acres but his “advisors” did him ZERO FAVORS! He just finished dead last in the 40 yard dash! DEAD LAST! 4.79/4.75 “might” get him a 5th round selection! Should have come back! PERIOD! So sick for that kid!
This is not a surprise, I don't think most people expected him to run a fast time, but last is not good. Everything I have heard (admittedly not much) is that the nfl is not sure what his position will be. I tend to think he is more of a Jermichael Finley type player.
Well, another year on the 40 acres might have left him better educated, but Humphrey would be no faster than he is now. He's big, strong and skilled. I like the options Texas has in the slot for 2019, so all is good.
He knew going in that lack of speed would be his issue. Since you cannot teach speed he did what he felt was best for him which was chancing getting hurt in the NFL rather than at Texas. H/TE is about all he can hope for.
My high school basket ball coach said "I can teach you to play defense, but I can't teach speed or height".
I see him as a Cordarrelle Patterson third receiver type of guy. He's never going to wow anyone with speed but he has good hands and a big frame and that'll keep him flexed out on the field in some form or fashion. I don't think Patterson has ever really wowed anyone either, but he got a ring with the Patriots so a team like that could definitely use him. I think he can parlay his wildcat and former RB talents into the occasional H-back situation, but there's no way he ever plays as a real TE on the field. At best, he's a poor man's Daniel Graham just set wayyyy off the line. And like others stated, nothing would change within the next calendar year that could "fix" that draft assessment any more. He'd still be running 4.7's next combine and he'd still be the same size.
Saw something where Jerry Rice's 40 at the combine was 4.71. But that was then, this is now. Deandre Hopkins who is considered slow for an elite receiver in the nfl ran a mid 4.5's.
You would think he could get in the 4.6 range. David Thomas, a tight end ran 4.67. I do think he'll be an impact player in the NFL. He has great hands and can break tackles.
