I was moving to a new apartment and drove by the stadium on my way with a load of stuff. The next day in the news, there was a piece about how the "hippies" had cut sections out of the turf and toted them off, IIRC. A lot of burned areas, too.

    Wow, what a line up!

On DKR and the "hippies", interestingly enough, DKR was apparently one of the more laid back old-school coaches of the era when it came to "hippies", etc. I remember reading that Bear Bryant and the Bama big wigs were freaking out over the early '70s young men wearing long hair, facial hair, etc. He called Royal to get his opinion. DKR told Bear that he didn't care at all what sort of hairstyle a player wore as long as he played well on the football field. Bryant lightened up a bit after that.

I bet it wasn't the "hippie" aspect of this that had Royal so worked up. DKR would have probably been just as pissed off if a bunch of Morman missionaries in slacks and ties, or a bunch of Marine recruits, had cut up his field...

Yes I was there. I think about it every day. I still have the ringing in my ears to prove it.
