"Brennan Eagles is starting to get people a little excited. Heading into the off-season we wrote they wanted to get his body operating optimally and whatever they've done it has worked. He's running better than ever, even though he's up to nearly 230 pounds. He's been working at Z which seems to suggest more playing time this season with Collin Johnson a fixture at X. Eagles has been taking advantage of Devin Duvernay taking the camp off to heal (it's a very minor injury that he played through last year)."​

"The first thing I heard was "Jordan is fast as [bleep]." For someone known for his quickness, build, and fluidity, that's encouraging. Expectations are he'll carry himself well in pads, but still, everyone wants to see it. He'll be hit early and often by defensive players anxious to test his mettle. Athleticism isn't in question, neither are his hands. Will he drop his shoulder and run it up the middle? We'll see."​

 

From Inside Texas on McCoy --

"Bru McCoy was the first name mentioned. Sources have been high on he and Whittington since they arrived, now they just want to see how they respond to physicality. With Collin Johnson out for the spring, McCoy has been working at XWR (outside boundary receiver). There's still a good chance he plays HWR (slot) next season. All the same stuff to Whittington applies, even being fast despite being known for other strengths: size, fluidity, and quickness."​

 

The brother also trains WR Joshua Moore who is also supposed to be looking extremely fit as well. Moore has his chance right now with Jake not here yet, JWhitt at RB and McCoy working at the X while Collin Johnson rests.

 

This would be pretty great, if only ....

" .... D’Shawn Jamison is taking reps with cornerbacks although I am told that he got a little time at nickel, as well.

Right now your starters at cornerback are Cook and Boyce with Jalen Green being the guy some believe could threaten for a starting spot. It depends on who you to talk to though. I’ve heard some expect for Green, at some point before the season, to seize one of those spots and not let it go. Others have indicated that it will remain Boyce and Cook. I get the sense that the competition is between Boyce and Green as Cook seems to have earned the trust of the staff last year and through this past offseason.

This is obviously a battle we will watch closely. Although Texas lost two starters at the position, they certainly don’t lack talent. Given the upside of both Green and Boyce, it’s a luxury to have guys of that caliber duking it out."​

I looked at the roster and saw Roach a t 290 and listed as a DL. Seems like he was listed at LB last week, probably an inadvertent holdover from last summer.

This is the most optimistic I have been during spring football in a while. Position battles everywhere. Linemen who have redshirted. This is what championship football looks like

Totally agree, really starting to feel this thing is moving. Feeling like 2001, 2002.

 

To me, more like 2004 or perhaps even 2005. There are similarities. Let me add that it’s not going to take TH eight years to win his “first” NC.

This years team reminds me a lot of 2003 and we need to remember that while the 2003 team won 10 games it struggled at times, got blown out in one game and absolutely failed to show up in another. But that team laid the foundation for the Rose Bowl run in 04 and the national championship in 05. Next year Texas will be replacing a crap ton of seniors just like that 03 team (they were replacing the Simms, Redding class) and I expect some struggles as young kids grow into their positions. Like 2003 I expect 10 wins but this team is not yet playoff or NC ready I think that comes in 2020 and 2021. I really like the growth we saw in season two in the team and in Herman. I wondered about him after first year but he seems to have gotten the team to buy in to his philosophy and culture. I am as excited to see next year's team as I have been in a decade and see what they can accomplish but lets tap the brakes on being a NC contender just yet.

 

Agree totally, FWHORN. A bit of patience is in order - but patience doesn't seem to be a strong suit for fans!

 

Chip Brown on the NCAA & McCoy --

"AUSTIN, Texas — Before filing a waiver with the NCAA on behalf of five-star athlete/receiver Bru McCoy, University of Texas officials were watching and waiting to see if there was anything to be learned in how the NCAA ruled on two, high-profile eligibility waivers: Ohio State transfer quarterback Justin Fields and Miami (Fla.) transfer quarterback Tate Martell. On Tuesday, the NCAA granted the eligibility waiver of Martell after granting the waiver of Fields last month, meaning both won't have to sit out one year under standard NCAA guidelines and will instead be able to take the field for the Hurricanes and Buckeyes this fall. Fields transferred to Ohio State after playing his freshman season at Georgia in 2018. After Fields transferred to Ohio State, Martell transferred from Ohio State to Miami.

A source close to McCoy's situation at Texas told Horns247.com on Tuesday UT officials wanted to wait and see how the NCAA ruled on the waivers of Martell and Fields in case there were any details or deficiencies in those waivers that Texas compliance officials needed to consider before filing McCoy's eligibility waiver. The decision to wait on the Fields and Martell rulings wasn't so much about any similarities in the circumstances surrounding their transfers as much as it was about any tendencies in the way the NCAA was ruling on those cases.

The NCAA doesn't exactly come out and explain itself in these matters. But it's safe to say Texas officials see Martell and Fields being granted immediate eligibility as a good sign for McCoy, a 2019 five-star recruit who initially enrolled early at USC before deciding to pack up days later and enroll early at Texas.

According to sources close to the situation, McCoy felt he was deceived by USC in more ways than Kingsbury appearing and then disappearing from the Trojans' coaching staff in the span of roughly one month. McCoy had seen enough. On Thursday, Jan. 24, McCoy entered the new, NCAA transfer portal, packed up his USC dorm room and was on a flight to Austin that weekend, so he could enroll and begin classes at Texas on Monday, Jan. 28....."​

I agree.
I think we will be playoff ready if Orlando continues to prove what a good coach and game planer he is. I do think Defense will be the Achilles heal next year. The offense looks stacked and ready to explode! I see a 10 win regular season and a playoff birth. If we can beat OU twice. That will be tough. But I think they will be down a little.

Something on the receiver competition --

I would throw down Texas’ WR starters against any corps in the country. However, right now Collin Johnson is out for the Spring, Devin Duvernayis out with a pubic bone bruise, and John Burt is out for track and field. None of this is anything to worry about.

With those guys out that means there are a lot of reps to go around for the receivers.

Two guys really making the best use of these extra reps are Malcolm Epps and Brennan Eagles.

While Epps is a staff favorite and has some impressive hands, right now he can only be categorized as a deep threat. He is very good at the fade route and bodying guys for the ball, but the rest of his routes need polish. He’s a high-ceiling guy who with better route running could become a real contributor.

Brennan Eagles has been running with the Z-receivers, which may be a good indicator for next year. Right now, he’s behind Collin Johnson as an X. From what I’m seeing and hearing, he is understanding his body better at this level, and taking advantage of the extra reps he’s seeing. He’ll see the field more this season.

Josh Moore is back to the same guy who made the diving play against USC. To me, he’s Reggie Hemphill-Mapps with a better attitude. There may be two very good freshmen coming in with Jake Smith and Bru McCoy, but he’ll likely stick as the first string guy at that spot. He is legit.

Bru McCoy is the name that constantly comes out of the program. They almost show him off like he’s a trophy. While his set up is a bit odd and his running style is a little herky-jerky, it works. He is somehow able to maintain fluidity in his movements and guys bounce off of him. He’s also pretty legit and would likely share time with Josh Moore at slot. The biggest question for him is when he gets his waiver decision back. Right now, Texas is waiting on the NCAA to come down with more of the decisions, and from what I’m being told, the NCAA’s case is brittle against decent lawyers. And would you look at that…​
