I think the point was Texas doesn't have an ex-coach from North Texas as they have from Houston. Not wanting to change the coaching staff all Herman could do is hire the analyst. IMHO like I have said for 18 months, Herman has written off North Texas hoping that OS recruiting will cover the hole. The analyst and Carrington tandem isn't going to work against ou or aggy as you have to get in front of the HS coaches often to battle those two.

I like the direction Herman has the program headed. If he can string more 10 win seasons and continue to win against sec teams, those north Texas kids will take notice and want to be a part of the team.

I don't think Tom has written DFW off, and he knows there's work to do. He just doesn't want to change his coaching staff just to have an ex DFW HS coach on staff. The coaches we have should hit DFW harder.

Not sure if Prosper fits into the definition of the DFW area, but we have a good lineman recruit committed from there. We're also working hard on recruiting an Arlington High ath with an OU family background. We're chasing some Duncanville guys pretty hard, Dorbah from HP, and others. I agree we haven't worked DFW nearly hard enough, but I wouldn't say we've written it off.

The sleepy little farming community of Prosper has exploded to be considered Metroplex, as long as the kid's name isn't "James", nor is he related to any part of the "James clan".

Of course there are MULTIPLE reasons that the James clan wound up in Prosper, none of which have to do with acreage or large houses.

there were multiple points made. here's mine...
hiring an analyst is not enough effort

No question about it. The entire northern corridor from Dallas to Denton has indeed exploded.

Prosper, Aubrey, Frisco, Lewisville, Roanoke, etc. were all sleepy tiny bergs till about 25 years ago. No more. Over 7.5 million souls populate the "metroplex" now. And if you get in your car and get on I35, or I30, or I45, or I75 or I20 you'll know exactly what I mean.

It may take some time - but I would love to see the Red River sealed off to stop Texas HS players from going to Zero U. The Longhorns should always get first pick - then I suppose the Osoners can get in line to compete against TCU, Baylor, and Tceh for the rest.

DFW is good recruiting territory for a lot of the middling schools, too. Iowa State, Kansas, etc. Really good players who maybe don't get the national publicity because they play 5A instead of 6A and don't get as many touches in their current systems.

TCU makes its living, in significant part, off that type of athlete--especially in the DFW area. Lots of diamonds in the rough. Greater Houston has plenty too.

Not sure that this is an accurate statement for a reason for Herman to ignore DFW. Plenty of 6-A schools up here starting with Allen and Southlake Carroll. Friso limits their HS's to 5A for academic reasons. Highland Park swings between 5A and 6A depending on how they manage enrollment to maintain 5A (very unusual every two years they surprisingly end up 1 or 2 students short of qualifying for 6A).

OU, aggy, tOSU, Alabama and (surprisingly) the PAC-12 seemingly have convinced the North Texas HS coaches that they offer more than Texas can offer.

This is baffling. Seems like the University of Texas would intuitively have more to offer Texas kids. Herman should be able to turn this around.

One would think so. My gut tells m it has to have something to do with Strong that Herman has not been able to overcome.

Maybe. The first thing Charlie did, like the 2nd day he was hired, was to go up to Oak Cliff Bible and speak in the church. It was his first big act as coach. That's got to count for something with part of North Texas.

I think us offering Jaden Hullaby is good juju. We need to get in to these schools that are recruiting and turning out top athletes. (Bishop Dunne).

Herman's deep Houston ties has made his recruiting success in the Houston area much easier. He has no such advantage in DFW. I sense we're working DFW now, perhaps we should work it even harder.

Also, a few big score margin slapdowns of OU wouldn't hurt.

Test will be building on Jackson's commitment in future years - Jefferson from North Mesquite was huge for Strong, but then not much of a follow-up while ou and aggy made gains.

It's still very early on in 2020 recruiting, but thus far 3 out of 6 commitments are from DFW/North Texas, one from the San Antonio area, one from Austin, and one from the Golden Triangle.

We have some other DFW/North Texas recruits with serious interest, and Tom and his staff appear to be working it hard. OU has always been a foe for recruiting in that area--nothing new there. We're not going to get them all, but I don't think Tom and his staff have written off DFW/North Texas. Tom's usual stronghold (Houston) is lagging a bit early on for us this cycle, but I expect we'll get some good talent from Greater Houston as always. A&M + LSU* seem to be our principal foes in recruiting the Bayou City and its surroundings.

Bama and other national powers will cherry pick some from all over the State.

    * Unfortunately, LSU seems to have recently discovered that the State of Texas extends West of a line drawn roughly N-S from Houston to Tyler to Paris ... LSU currently has four 4* Texans committed for 2020--2 of them from West of the aforementioned N-S line. Add to that, Big Ed's bush-league tactics of preventing a UT camp in Louisiana, and we need to put a beatin' on them in September.

    In the recent past...

At an LSU v. A&M game at College Station, Pierre sits at the top of Kyle field and gazes towards the setting sun.

Pierre to Boudreaux--"Wait a minute, I think Texas keeps on going further and further West!"

Boudreaux to Pierre--"Nahhh, I think it's Arizona just past that big parking lot over there."

Yeah, I'm glad for the focus. I think that means that we'll eventually be a top player. But for 2020, 247 says that 2 of the Top 5 Texans are North Texas kids who are committed elsewhere. 4 of the next 10 (or 6 of the Top 15 total) are from North Texas and we got Jackson out of D'ville. 2 of the next 5 (16-20 in Texas) are from North Texas and we lead for Prince.

So 8 of the Top 20 in Texas are from North Texas. We have one commit (Jackson) and lead for one (Prince Dorbah). We're out on the other 6. I said elsewhere that 25%-35% of the North Texas would be ok for me, so I'll stand by that if we get Dorbah.

Missing out in North Texas on...
Drew Sanders #27 nationally - Alabama
RJ Mickens #49 nationally - Clemson
Nate Anderson #74 nationally - ouSUX
Jalen Kimber #77 Nationally - Georgia
    Jaxon Smith-Njigba #86 nationally - ohio state
EJ Smith #126 nationally - CBs to Stanford

Seeing that Prince is outside the Top 100 for right now, there are 6 Top 100 national recruits from North Texas, and we have/are in on 1.

Hopefully we improve for 2021 where all of the Top 5 TEXANS are from North Texas and we are in on/lead with ALL of them!!! Brockemeyer, Wheaton, Stone, Byrd, Sanders...all North Texas...all Top 32 nationally...all have 100% CBs to the good guys.

    That sounds like some focusness!

True, we've lost far too many head-to-head battles with OU for the cream of the crop in N. Texas in recent years. I wouldn't chalk this up to any cluelessness or laziness on Tom or his staff though. OU has always been a thorn in our side in N. Texas, and others (LSU + A&M + national powers) are exploiting this territory too, with TCU, Tech, etc. dining pretty well on the leftovers.

Rashad Samples' work is already paying dividends and may turn the tide. Also, 4* Ath. Jahari Rogers of Arlington--a Sooner legacy--apparently leans towards us. Getting him over OU would be a nice coup. We're also in on Dorbah, Thompson, Scott, Karic, and others. We're not where we need to be yet, but I think the staff understands the situation and is moving in the right direction.

Ideas to push things forward for us in N. Texas: like I said upthread--a few big score margin slapdowns of OU wouldn't hurt...

Some version of this question comes up every season. I have always felt its the wrong question. The real question is not "why doesnt Texas recruit the DFW area" (bc Texas does recruit the area and has since the 1990s at least). The better question is "why are kids from that area so smitten with Oklahoma"? And I dont know the answer to that one because it makes no sense to me.

The short answer is an overabundance of ou alumni in the area to assist, and how ou pushes the boundaries of legal recruiting (see the first part of the answer for a clue).

OU's largest alumni chapter is Dallas, with Houston being #2

    Dallas was/is Arkansas' largest chapter

Ha! That's it! Trump's been on to something--we need a wall on the Texas border. But on the Northern border with Oklahoma.

(Note, this may be good or bad humor, but it is NOT meant to start a political discussion...).
