I guess everyone deserves a second chance. But if my son played football in Mt Vernon, I’d move.

Briles should be unhireable at any level of the sport until the full facts and details of the Baylor investigation have been revealed and addressed.

I say good for him. Maybe he learned some things and has grown from it. And yes I would let my boys play for him. :yikes:

What they are thinking is that they just got a $5 million a year coach for $50,000. On the field, Briles is a potential HOF coach. In Mount Vernon, he will have to toe the line, and should he get out of step, he'll wish they had shot him first.

Do I like Briles as a human being? I didn't like him before all the **** broke in McLennan County, but I admire his knowledge of football and ability to develop and teach kids the sport. If I lived in east Texas and had a son that was a really good athlete, I'd be renting a house in Mount Vernon.

Briles developed great HS QBs and prepared them for D-1 and beyond. "Our" beloved Mack Brown took great HS QBs and made them also rans. Yes, I am the guy that tried to convince Mack to hire Briles from Stephenville and later from Tech.

Don't know who is in their district or region, but they need to know there's a new sheriff in town. I think Dandy Don is smiling.

No offense but id say your priorities as a parent were *** backwards.

Brilez sleaze didn’t start during his time as a college coach. It was before that, as a HS coach.

As I said, my dislike for him started way before the **** hit the fan in Waco. He is, however, really good at recognizing potential and developing football talent, not someone who wastes those talents.

As a human being and as a Baptist, I detest what happened at Baylor, but lay the blame firmly at the feet of BOR and BMDs that not only allowed it, but continued to perpetuate the atmosphere, which existed in part before Briles arrival.

Baylor regents later said that an investigation revealed 17 sexual assaults or cases of domestic violence by 19 players from 2011 to 2016, including four gang rapes. A claim in a civil lawsuit put the numbers much higher. In its announcement, Mount Vernon ISD made no reference to the handling of sexual assault reports by Briles at Baylor. Grant Teaff, a former Baylor coach and later head of the American Football Coaches Association, endorsed Briles and noted he had not incurred a recruiting violation as a coach.

Well that sure is a big relief. No recruiting will be done. I will tell my granddaughters,
    "good to go".

Not sure this character should be in charge of impressionable young men or around any young woman. He's beyond radioactive.

Maybe an NFL position coach or coordinator would be more appropriate.

His X's and O's and coaching/development of athletes on the field is not in question. He's outstanding at that. But some things are much more important than win loss records. But I'm not a Mt Vernon ISD voter, so I suppose I don't get a say in this one (other than bitching about it on an internet board).

While this is sickening to most, including me, Mt Vernon ISD has the right to hire him and they will eventually get what they deserve*. If the voters in the ISD don't like it, they should get together and run a slate of candidates for school board in the next election on a fire Briles platform. That's the remedy.

*if Mt Vernon / Briles wanted to hire OJ Simpson as a running back coach (a good fit for a Briles staff), they could do so. The I in ISD stands for independent. If the voters in the district get pissed off about all this, they have a simple remedy.

Not sure about Dandy Don smiling but I agree with everything else you say. The man can coach. You can’t sacrifice morals and honesty for wins but I am not sure of all of the details of Baylor crimes when he was there. The Baylor President of that time is currently getting a lot of national exposure.
I think Briles can be a jerk and maybe he should be banned from coaching for what happened under his watch. As I said, I don’t know all of the real details, but the a- -hole knows how to coach and can recognize and develope talent.
If he had the character and personality and IF he had replaced Brown in 2010, wonder where Texas would have been these last 9 years.

Has Briles ever accepted responsibility for whst occured at Baylor? He certainly isn't in a position to teach these young men accountability. They'll be better football players but he failed tragically in making his players better men.

I am wondering if in team meetings did Briles ever mention to his players about responsibility and leadership and being a good role model to others? I'll answer my own question and say that he did because all coaches talk about that kind of stuff. it's not always x'sand O's especially between wind sprints and practice ending huddles. Coaches take joy/pride in preparing their players for life, that's a big part of coaching. That's also a part of building a recruiting reputation with parents and community. So, in view of that, Briles probably did say and teach responsibility and character. But did the kids listen? Was it Briles job to follow his players around to make sure they didn't do anything wrong. Maybe he should have attended parties. Maybe the parents are culpable (I think that's the right word). And maybe society is also guilty. I am sure Briles made some mistakes. Did he punish the earliest offenders to send a message? I don't know. But unless he's stupid I am sure he is going to be vigilant and watchful. I think he should get a second chance. But maybe a weakness of mine is I'm too soft.

The correct answer is after finding out about these issues it's his responsibility to hold them accountable for their actions which he clearly did not. Anyone can preach, but its how they are held accountable to the message that really matters.

Take another look at what he said after the trial. He’s nothing but a pompous twit, and fails to see all the other assaults that occurred and were proven true. Typical boasts of jackasses like him.

Article in the Dallas News this morning indicates that the hire was a closely guarded secret. Seems not everyone in the town is on board with the hire.

My problem with him is he was not contrite and never admitted any involvement in the problem ("I'm sorry that my players did this," or that "this happened under my watch.") I also have a brother that played under him (early in Brile's career) and he, and all of my Bailor brethren, including a minister brother-in-law, find no fault in ANYTHING Briles has done! I am disappointed as a relative and a Christian...

The homemade signs and banners made by fans of Mt Vernon's opponents (as well as the chants and taunts from opposing fans) should be epic.

Any time a public entity such as a school board finds it advisable to keep "a closely guarded secret" there is a problem.

For coaches, actions are more difficult than words. Baylor had a corrosive culture because Briles didn't hold his players accountable when he was made aware of their actions on multiple occasions. He had full control of his own decisions and/or inaction. That is where he failed these young men and has demonstrated that he can't be trusted to shape them in a positive direction.

How long before the district has to walk away from Briles because they underestimated the backlash?

This morning I was listening to 610 talk radio (Houston) and all they were talking about was arty farty. Also what a scumbag he is and how Mt V ISD sold their soul. This afternoon when running errands turned on 610 and it was arty farty, scumbag and how Mt V ISD sold their soul. It was a different person. There was not one positive comment on either show. I wonder what the talk radio in the Mt Vernon area is like?

This is what I'm wondering as well. I think it's absolutely shameless of Briles that he keeps trying to get hired somewhere, anywhere, despite the backlash he has encountered. It certainly demonstrates that he has forgiven himself, done no lasting wrong in his own mind, and certainly isn't concerned if anyone else thinks differently. Mt. Vernon needs to really ask themselves if they want a win at all costs mercenary with no conscience because that's what they've got.
