I'm not talking about urine odor. I'm talking about the general funk from dander, sweat, body oil and hair oil. What's the best way to get rid of this?

I use Nature's Miracle on any pee spots, but does that work on other smells? Does plain baking soda work? I saw Arm & Hammer has a Pet Fresh product too. How about Febreeze?

    What works for people?

I just use the powder for carpets and sprinkle it over the carpet (any smell you want). Then vacuum over it.
    Seems to work well.

Steam clean them. But if it's been a long time it's going fill the house with pet smell for weeks.

    Get new carpet.

That's actually what I had to do with the house I bought. The previous owner had 2 Labs that they kept outside during the day and inside at night. I don't think other than vacuuming they ever cleaned it. We tried everything. Steam clean, different powders, everything. We went with new carpet for the downstairs. Might be more expensive, but if the smell is pretty strong it might be worth it. It was for us. Just an option.

We're not desperate enough to replace anything right now. We have one small dog in an apartment and we've had him for about 3 months. The smell isn't normally even noticeable, but every so often I'll catch a whiff. I figure I should do some preventive maintenance occasionally to avoid future nastiness. Is there a brand of carpet powder I should look for?

They have a bunch of different fragrances at any HEB or WalMart. And they usually have one just for pet odors. We usually do that every 3 or 4 weeks. Works good.

Petzyme from Petsmart works for me. You can soak your carpet with it and just let it work on the old stains.
Spray and forget on the new ones, after you clean up the excess.

I use it on my Oriental rugs without any discoloration -- same spot every freaking
    time!!!!! [IMG]

Still love my dogs... all two of their mangy pee-laden butts. [IMG]

I would give the folks at Bark n Purr a call to see what they recommend. There will be a natural solution to neutralize the odor. Then you can use whatever smell good you choose to use. But generally you don't want one in the same. Let the neutralizer do its job, then poof it up with smell good.

I would say a good steam cleaning in the process somewhere is a good idea. That and better maintenance in the future.

problem is the pet odor will soak into the carpet pad, and eventually into the slab , which you will have to mop with a heavy bleach solution to get rid of all the odor. It will be very noticeable to anyone without pets. Mask it for now, but sooner or later , probably need replacement
