1990 Houston game on right now. I wasn't there, but have read many times on here it was the loudest DKR crowd.

As I watch these older games, I notice the Texas crowds had just smatterings of burnt orange. No burnt orange end zones, etc.

Did Mack's "Come early, wear orange, be loud, stay late" have not only the influence here, but other schools as well? It seems right around that same time was when all fan bases would wear their colors and end zones were painted with the colors and/or logos.

    Just an observation.

I wasn’t at the game but remember the day well. I moved back home that day, having graduated earlier in the year and needed to BE RESPONSIBLE AND GET A JOB and all that so I hauled my life back to Houston and got there in time to watch the game with my dad.

Honestly I was surprised how well the Horns handled that UH offense. It was a pretty thorough beating of a good team when the Horns were not very good.

It was not so much fun being a Horns fan for most of the 80s.

Believe me, I know. Graduated HS in '87. It's why I, at the risk of derailing this, hope to never play a&m again. They made my formative years miserable. That's how I know I'm a true Longhorn, having stuck with them through all that.

I was there and it was awesome. I believe Houston was like a 17 point favorite or more.
I also was friends with "the idiot on the goal posts" from Wally Pryor.

Wow, I didn't know the fans rushed the field. How embarrassing.

Houston was at the time unstoppable and ranked number 3. Before that game they had scored 16 TD's in under 1 minute. Like think Baylor 5X. The year before they beat us 47-9. And 2 years before 66-15.
So the fact that we crushed them like that was, in a way like crushing Bama now.

It is pretty much known as the loudest game ever at DKR. Dan's liquor store I believe sold out of pints of whiskey before the game. The entire east side were foot stomping with the metal bleachers after every big play.

I've posted about this game many times here before. Student draw seats on the 50 yard line first row right behind the Houston bench. It was epic!

I remember that game well. It was the most "electric" I've seen our crowd from 88-93--other than perhaps when Brian Jones stuffed the aTm QB near the goal line to seal a victory over the ags.

UH normally has a very low fan following, but they brought a fair number of fans to that game. Witherspoon was their star RB. He was a terror catching passes in the flats out of the backfield, and on draws. They held up these goofy big cardboard spoon cutouts whenever Witherspoon did something good. John Jenkins was a loudmouth coach and much despised throughout the conference. He threw many fits on the sidelines that game...

Robert Heard referred to Jenkins as "the church lady".

If anybody knows Jerry Parks and wants to watch him piss his pants to this day, just sneak up behind him and yell "Butch Hadnot's coming!!!"

I remember buying a burnt orange sweater from a really nice men's store and wearing it to the Houston/Texas game in the Astrodome. That was a couple years after I graduated because I could not afford such a thing in college. Very few people actually wore burnt orange when I was at Texas in the '70's. I had an orange windbreaker with a National Championship logo on in from 1969. Still have it....Normally people might put on their TEXAS cap and head to the game....

Same here, except I started in 1991 after moving from NC. It makes it sweeter when the Horns have great seasons. No one can accuse you of being a bandwagon fan.

I was there. It was the most electric atmosphere I can remember at a Texas game. The cold air was a great conductor.

At the end of the game a bunch of folks rushed the field and one fan was climbing on the goal post in the north endzone. Wally Prior said over the PA system, "get that ******* off the goal post!" If I recall correctly. That was funny as hell!

    9 PM tonight, 2003 game against A&M.

Benson ran for 283 yards in that game. For those interested in reminiscing his greatness on the 40 Acres.

I'll make a point to try and watch the replay tonight... that might have been Ced's most rushing yards in a game.

my Dad had undergone about 7 months of chemo and this game was coming up...I tried my best to get tickets and just decided to rent a wheelchair and go and get in the stadium. Believe it or not, the people that we found had wheelchair access seats in the ZONE and two 50-something aggies stood up in front of us once they found out we were Texas fans...knowing this was the last football game my Dad would see I asked them to please sit down so we could see....no response....they continued to stand even though we were killing them....so, when I think of aggy….guess what I think of....

Ron was an outstanding announcer, who didn't deserve what happened to him. We've been friends for many years, and I shall never forget his parting words in the locker room to Fred Akers the night before Fred was fired.

Ron Franklin, true Southern Gentleman. class act, deserved a better fate, but for me, second only to Kern Tipps & Keith Jackson
