And Gilbert remains the only Horns QB with a Super Bowl ring. That's some poetic justice. Hope the kid has a long NFL career.
It is so hard to understand why he could not succeed here. Obviously, he is "all that," but he was completely snakebit in a UT uniform.
Recruited to play in one offensive system (along with the rest of the team) and suddenly jammed into a wildly different system. Couple that with the mental challenges of knowing most everybody in the stadium thinks you're overrated and/or underperforming, and therefore pressing ad trying to do too much... Call it snakebit if you want, but he was fully victimized by the program's (and fan) hangover from the 2009 loss to Bama.
Good take on it. Like others in this thread, I wish him the best. I will admit, though, to having that frustration with him in real time when he was starting here.
I kept count that year, and although I may not have remembered it exactly right, I believe that in the 2010 season 6 of his interceptions hit our receiver in the hands or chest first, and 7 should-have-been touchdown passes were dropped.
I remember Jan 2010 vs Bama with Colt out and GG on about the 30 yl down by 5 with 5 minutes left to play. Bama defense won those last minutes. About 9 months later GG in NRG vs Rice got hit and out for a couple plays. His pass accuracy was never the same. Shoulder surgery in Dec if I recall correctly. 2010 was a mess not for just GG.
Gilbert was not handled well at Texas. I don't think he had played any meaningful minutes before the natty game. I remember that Davis told him to just enjoy the game and he had almost no preparation to play. The lack of preparation cost us a natty and probably was a large factor in our decline. The next year, Mack tried to totally revamp the offense, which resulted in an out of sorts offense. Our misses on OL recruits was really starting to show that year. So Gilbert basically never got established as a QB. Partly his fault, partly Davis and Brown.
The only thing that could have salvaged the 2010 season was if Colt, Quan, Ship, Charlie Tanner, Chris Hall and Adam Ulatoski all got waivers to play an extra year. And Mack might have still ****** that up with his knuckle headed decision to change systems. GG was just unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. That season was going to be an abortion no matter what.
I believe that Gilbert's on field issues had their roots as a freshman in the NCG when Colt went down and he had to come in and take over in the biggest game of the year. The week after the game I watched the weekly show about the team and they spoke to GG about the coaches preparing him for the upcoming game. GG replied saying the coaches told him to enjoy the trip and the week and he didn't take many snaps with the first team in practice. He was just having a good time and taking it all in. So, IMHO he wasn't anywhere near prepared to step in when Colt was injured and done for the night. I put a lot of the responsibility on the coaches shoulders. That seemed to carryover resulting in GG's mostly mediocre later performances. Even after he transferred to SMU, he was better, but I never thought he was all that great.
Pretty much. Transferring was the best thing GG could have done. He would have been hampered if not outright killed behind the offensive lines we had back then and his career might very well have been shortened like David Ash's was. Also GG seems to be a bit of a late bloomer who needed good coaching in a consistent system. He wasn't going to get that with Mack where we were a spread team one year, a power running team the next, and then maybe we'll become a giraffe or a narwhal after that. Jfc.
