That play was the ballgame. If we hold them to 16 yards or less on that play, we probably have a 75%+ chance to win the game considering how unstoppable the offense was in the 2nd half. The defense we called on that play was unconscionable. We basically blitzed 6, had a safety creep up to cover short throws, and then had 4 DBs just play straight man-to-man on the 4 receivers that went out on patterns. I'm not against bringing some pressure to try to force an early throw, but you have to have 2 safeties near the first down line, with eyes on the QB, to make a play on the ball. The ball traveled about 20 yards in the air on that play...plenty of time for a 2 deep safety to run to the ball and try to make a play virtually anywhere on the field. With the defense we ran (4 guys man up, with eyes on the receiver and not the qb), if just 1 of the 4 DBs gets beat, then its a converted 1st down...and that's exactly what happened. I still can not believe that happened. 3rd and 17, ball completed 18 yards downfield in the air, wide open receiver, and the pass wasn't contested at all at the point of completion. The fact that the ball can travel that far in the air and there was no one able to even try to make a play on the ball is unbelievable. Huge coaching mistake IMO. It was a good game. The LSU QB played a great game. The LSU receivers toasted our guys all over the place. Our offense played a good game as well. And even though our D got torched overall, on that final LSU possesion they stiffened up enough to force a 3rd and 17. That should be virtually impossible to convert. It's really a bummer that we didn't get a better defensive strategy on that play.
A lot of plays went LSU way, including the onside kick. Also, the Offense forced passes in 2nd quarter instead of trying to run and keep pressure off Sam. Net result was the last possession for LSU that went for a TD
Tod Orlando should be fired for that call. It was lost the game. If you think Gundy isn't paying attention. Just wait. OSU will have something special for us not even going to mention Lincoln Riley.
All of us at the game said the same thing--why blitz there? Makes no sense at all. Just tackle them short of 16 yards.
Orlando == Diaz part deuce. Hopefully he learns from this. Being stubborn is a bad characteristic of a coach.
Oh darn, it sounds like you are agreeing now with negative thoughts. You must possess a low IQ, or so I was told for posting negative comments.
Did we ever stop LSU without blitzing though? I remember an LSU touchdown where we dropped 7-8 in a confined space and they just stood there doing nothing in no man's land. Blitzing was better than those guys standing around in zone coverage nowhere near the open LSU receivers.
Yeah but Burrow also made a great throw under pressure. Both Herman and Orlando went aggressive and they got burned. Oh well. Sucks but LSU was up for it.
The bigger problem is that fact that we drop 8 and it is meaningless. The secondary needs vast improvement. Blitzing 6 should not be your best option. The bodies back there have to improve and cover better. We are going to have shootouts with Okie State, OU and Baylor
In hindsight, more than 75%, since we did in fact go right down and score on the next possession. Shows how far our defense has fallen: in 2005 we make the stop on 4th and 2, in 2019 we can't make the stop on 3rd and 17. Since we had done such a good job of that all game? Nope. Bringing extra guys and hoping they got to Burrow before he hit the open guy was about the only way we ever did anything positive on LSU passing plays.
It was a stupid **** call. Orlando needs two courses in football defense: 1) How to disguise your defense 2) How & when to blitz One of the best ever is an hour South in Blanco. I have Bill Bradley's phone number when Herman decides he wants a great defense. Mack Brown had to hire Dick Tomey to get a quality defense. Herman needs to contract with Bill to fix ours.
I get that the Cowboy formation wasn’t stellar last night, but with 3rd and 17 and 8 DBs, I like our chance of holding Burrows to 16 yards or less. After all, that was the goal, “prevent a first down and force a punt.” We had a sack on 2nd. Bringing 6 with one creeping up seemed like a terrible call to me. It just wasn’t necessary given the down and distance. One more point. Has anyone else noticed that Caden Sterns doesn’t quite seem to be the player he was last year?
Yes I noticed he missed some tackles. I have been assuming Orlando would coach up the defense and they would improve. That happened in 17’ and 18’.
Herman proudly stated at his first Monday presser prior to La Tech that the team has bought in to the physicality and methods and culture. Why we are still missing tackles is mind boggling, really.
Just watched the replay of the game. Agree. That 3rd & 17 was sadly, the play of the game. Yeah, and Cesspool Herbstreit is just awful.
Regarding Herbie, can’t stand the guy. Not objective. A “know it all.” Loves the SEC. Hates Texas. Probably a pipe dream but I wonder if CDC could request that ABC/ESPN put someone else on the Texas broadcasts when their “A” team is assigned. Think about it. This guy called the program and fans a “cesspool.” CDC would certainly have justification to make the request.
Worst play call of the game. Tom was asked in the press conference after the game 'why'. His answer was like 'we wanted to get the QB or prevent them from completing a pass'. Huh? Who care's if they get ten yards!? Just not 17 or more!
I finally read the game thread. Seemed to be a lot of complaints about not sending enough of a pass rush during the game. Was the problem that we blitzed or that LSU did a good job picking it up while Burrow stepped up in the pocket and made the throw? Not trying to pile on Sterns, but if he doesn't get burned and either knocks down the pass or immediately is in position to make the tackle, are we talking about the blitz? Or, he gets burned like he did and makes the tackle, are we talking about the blitz? Texas sacked Burrow on the previous play. TH said they felt it was the right call at the time. Hell, the defense had momentum right there. After the game he said they were trying to give the offense the best field position possible after a punt by LSU. LSU executed against the blitz better than Texas did performing the blitz and defending the pass.
What had Texas's secondary done most of the night to show that had Texas dropped 8 in coverage, Burrow still wouldn't find an open receiver for the first down? Disrupting and getting pressure to him was the right call, IMHO.
If they get 10, they go for it on fourth and 7 (they were not going to punt in that situation). Think we would have stopped them on a fourth and 7? I don't.
