LSU game take aways

Discussion in 'On The Field' started by WorsterMan, Sep 8, 2019.

  1. WorsterMan

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Watched at home, have not watched replay yet, so results are still sinking in:

Give LSU credit - they are top 5 good.

Great effort by the Horns - kept playing, never gave up

Think some players grew up, team saw what level they need to play on to be elite

2 early opportunities in Red Zone = 0 pts. were KILLERS !!

    Duevernay is a beast!

Why continue Sam runs up the gut when D in goal line D and looking / cheating to stuff you?

    OL played well.

    Corners were /are very vulnerable

Above could have been less so if more pressure was put on Burrows

Speaking of Burrows, he is really good, but he is a cocky and classless little prick...reminds me of Mayfield.

Crowd sounded LOUD and fully into it on TV.

That is all I can think of at the moment... what were some of your take aways?

Gave mine in game thread but I will say we’re facing challenges against any comparable passer with talented receivers; OSU, OU, and maybe Baylor if we cannot get enough pressure.

Good takes. Not sure if Ehlinger was just off last night, but his deep balls were under thrown all night. The short underneath passing game was working, but the Texas coaching affliction of abandoning what works struck again last night. At least it felt like they abandoned it for the most part in favor of trying to connect on 30+ yard passes quite a bit.

It felt to me like Texas made Burrow a Heisman candidate last night. Giving up not only 18 but a TD on 3rd and 17 is inexcusable.

Great play call on a suspect decision on the first 4th and goal play. The Ingram drop was bizarre. It looked as if he swatted the ball away.

After the interception to get the ball right back, not taking the points on 4th and goal is also inexplicable and inexcusable , in my low IQ opinion.

Burrow did look arrogant on the sideline, I agree.

The broadcast crew was terrible. Felt like it was on the SEC Network itself. Herbstreit suggesting LSU could be #1 was one fo the most ludicrous things he has said, and that is saying a lot. It's a compliment. in a way, to Texas, but for the most part just an odd suggestion.

The commentary throughout seemed to favor LSU. Only LSU made mistakes, it seemed, not Texas making good plays.

Doesn’t that seem to be an old time talent of ours? That an running blitzes that seemed destined to be picked up. Overall great game but sure some frustrating old habits I wish would go away.

Burrow in; Ehlinger out (for now)

Our o-line performed very well against a stout defense

Roschon plays hard and is our most effective RB right now

The TE could be utilized more and become an asset rather than a check-down option

Duvernay and Eagles are the best WR options and I especially like Duv’s physicality

Red zone O needs a little creativity

I love Sam and I think he will win us a championship of some sort at some point. But if there is one part of his game that is weak it’s his deep ball.

If he could just throw an accurate deep ball...!

We had a TD in first possession if he placed ball correctly.

    Nothing wrong with CJ.

That’s why CJ is not more productive and also what is going to create the opportunity for Dev and Eagles. That and the degree of coverage teams will devote to CJ.

Vol Horn 4 Life Good Bye To All The Rest!

I lay the end result on poor game management by the coaches. Instead of coaching a football game, I felt it was all about aggression trying to see who has the biggest dick instead of being smart and evaluating each moment.

    • Can't help a dropped ball in the end zone on 4th down, I probably would have gone for it too.
    • Second go around you take the easy 3 points instead of going for it yet again.
    • Two minutes left in the half and we call time out so LSU can kick a FG and leave us "time to score". We have a pretty bizarre series and give them the ball back again with about 1:30 left and it only takes LSU a few seconds to score a TD. Given this is a slobber knocker so far and a close game I would have run the clock.
    • Burrow was terrible every time we brought pressure and picked us apart when we gave him time and dropped 8 into coverage, yet much of the second half we brought little pressure and Burrow did his thing.
    • Sam was off last night so what did we do? Throw the ball 30-40 yards downfield costing us a down a few times on drives that seemed to already be going well.
    • Why didn't we run the ball more in the first half and seem to want to have Sam as the primary runner? We seemed to be running well (except at the goal line) when we did hand off and could have controlled the clock more. Then we were behind the entire second half because of the boneheaded move mentioned above so we couldn't.
That FG we didn't attempt and the late first half TD is the difference in the game. I thought overall we played well enough to beat that team, but in my opinion our coaching gave the game away. As David Simm's said in Tin Cup, sometimes par is good enough.

Agree VolH but on the pressure bit. We did have pressure on Burrow he just got rid of the ball quickly, think of the 3rd and 17 killer, and accurately. He probably had his best game of the year, the p****.

I agree with the announcer reviews. Herbstreit is the worst ‘cheerleader’ for a broadcaster, every single game. And he hates Texas with a passion. Makes me wonder if we didn’t recruit him, ala Mayfield, or something. I will never ever listen to that prick again. Turning off sound and going radio. Hell, the Longhorn broadcasters are more objective than those rah-rah clowns. And I do get tired of one-sided opinions even when it is our crew. I thought I was watching that ‘best team in history of college football, USC 2005’, again.
    2. Or maybe #1, referees cannot win a game , but BigXII refs deserve an assist. They are beyond pathetic. For both sides, terrible. They have completely lost control of game management. I paid attention and kept score. On the 19 play drive, they had seven, SEVEN players down. Herbstreit explained that it was hot! No,duh. But apparently only on one side of the line. For player to be down, stagger off one play, and run back on like a deer! BS. Three times down, sit out a quarter. Seriously, they are either hurt or not. NCAA needs to address this. For player safety. You cant play for 20 seconds, stand around five minutes while some fat tub of guts wallows around, and do it over. It’s not fair for either side.
    3. As for throwing long repeatedly, the answer is the question to why we didn’t run the short screens as against La. Tech. Seven or eight in the box, you cant do either till you make them respect deep pass. We scored twice because that worked. And nearly did two other times. That is why Ingram was so alone on the dropped TD pass.
    4. Sadly, until we have at least a 4 good RB’s (and Roschon is a stud, but that still is only 2) we cant afford to run full running offense. Traps, mis-direction, RPO, etc. is just not practical. One injury to one of the GREAT RB’s and we have to play intramural all pass.
    5. Damn what a stud OL! LSU is a damn good D and those guys did wonders. The game hasn’t changed in 90 years. Four of the first MNC’s in the 1930’s were Minnesota. Never threatened again. But back in the day, they had linemen with more X,Z, and Y’s in their names than vowels. Great, large corn fed Eastern Europeans (like Wisconsin today) and they ruled the line of scrimmage. Not sexy or flashy but it still works. Our current OL, new freshmen studs, and the recruits we have are going to put big big smiles on all of us for a long time. Bet on it.

We need Roy Miller type options on the goal line. Can’t only have the Sam option.

Very proud of team. Great effort and never quit!

The referee was John McDade, who used to live just across the Potomac from DC, and works for Microsoft. He is not a favorite of anyone in the SEC.

That said, there were marginal, if not piss poor calls, but I'll take an SEC crew all day long over the lousy **** that Walt Anderson saddled the Big XII with as he exited. Lots of people with dental backgrounds or connections with the dental industry.

Mike Defee is the best referee in college football, but Anderson, Walleye Burks, and Bowelsby have saddled him with a crew that 4A coaches would pass on.

    1. O-line played well and will be a real strength of the team going forward.

    2. Orlando needs to junk the three man line. Ossai needs to be rushing the passer on every down. He came up with the int., but he is more a speed d-end.

    3. Duvernay is one tough receiver. Eagles is a straight up playmaker. Duvernay is too. C. Johnson was not 100% last night he will be fine.

    4. Green will be fine at corner with more game experience. I have my doubts about Boyce. Brandon Jones was our best safety last night. Sterns did not have a great game. With the offenses in the Big 12 we’re going to have shootouts.

    5. Sam’s strength is not the deep ball. If he were more accurate on those we probably have a couple of long plays maybe for td’s.

    6. Coaching decisions continue to hurt the team. On first series with 2nd and short, get the first down rather than take a shot. We needed to control the clock. I thought we should kick the fg one the first fourth down to keep even, but in retrospect going for it was the right call because we had a play they weren’t prepared for. The drop hurt and no telling how the tone of the game changes if Ingram makes the catch. Second go round take the points. Before half we weren’t playing well on either side of the ball at that time. Get to halftime 13-7.

My take in 25 words or less:

    • Great effort - Horns never quit.
    • Inexperience in defense showed up. Very athletic and talented, but still a lot to learn.
    • Offense was very good - will improve when the RB situation gets resolved.
    • LSU is an excellent team - they have a chance to win the SEC, not a shoo-in, but a reasonable chance.
Time to put LSU in the rear-view mirror, make some adjustments, and get ready for the rest of the schedule.

Wondered about that since I first got here pre-VY days.
(several accounts... once had 15,000 posts)... Roy4 I believe twas.

I had prepared an image of team stats.
    But here's the link.
    LSU vs. Texas - Team Statistics - September 7, 2019 - ESPN

Horns put up 530 yds total offense, 409 passing, 121 rushing (out-rushed them) and TOP was 33:53 to 26:07.
To a top-level SEC program. that had won 7 against non-Bama top10 teams in recent years.
Overall pretty even stats as a whole.
For this to be a Big12 vs SEC matchup, the stats look like an OU game. Score, too. Or UT vs Okla State. It was the D that was not ready for this level of game, in Game #2.

Horns score early at the goal line, game/momentum might have been different.
Getting that score at that time is what creates a big win, or failure to grab a big win.

The dif was giving up 20-7 halftime lead.
Outscored Tigers 31-25 in second half, but coverage gave up too much mid-distance and that right side-line pattern, way too much late in game.

If you really look back over the game, the Horns made a lot of very good plays. But also gave up critical big ones, too. Honestly, the game could have gone either way, but as it progressed I felt the better-prepared-to-play team won. It was a 6-pt game however the last 5 min went. Our missed early TD maybe a big factor in how it came out.

As I understand we returned 5 starters on defense, and were up against pretty good talent and experience at receiver. I expect the defense to get lot better by Cotton Bowl.

I am suspicious of the Tiger injuries. They were gassed. That was way too obvious.

Not thinking long and hard about it, here are two things that popped in my head:

    1. Secondary is just not that good. Youth has something to do with it to be sure, especially at the CB position, but a lot of it had to do with...
    2. Coaching. Leaving those guys out there most of the night in man coverage was just blindly dumb. They have got to be able to come up with a better game plan than that to give those guys a better chance to learn, succeed and gain some confidence.

Yup, coaches were asking a lot / too much of some of the young CB's against that team in some of those situations. Hope the players and especially the coaches learned something from it. We will see.

Yes, especially on that 3 rd and 17 play. I just think we have 4 underclassmen CB’s with little experience and there is nothing much Orlando can do but train them on the job. Even if he dropped 8 Burrow could have found someone over the middle for 18 yards. That was probably 60/40. So, Orlando went for it with an all out blitz. We have to keep training these corners until they blossom. It takes a while.

Trouble is you take Sterns out of the game when you blitz the house. Now he's man and he can't use his closing speed to break up the play. Our strength is our safeties and their speed, but they can't cover up mistakes if they are always in man. ET was all over the field in 08. Sterns needs that same role.

Watching Texas Gameday Final. They just showed the Ingram drop. To be sure, he should have caught it. Looking at it though, I'm surprised no one has mentioned it wasn't an accurate throw. Wide open, Sam just needed to lay it out at the goal line. Instead, it was slightly behind Ingram. He should have caught it, but my point is to illustrate what I said that while he had a fine game, Sam just seemed off on many of his throws, this one included.

Tons of yards, 4 TDs, but it could have been even better. I will take that as a positive on what he can do the rest of the season.

And, being the competitor he is, he likely would agree he could have done even more.

Sam was tight in the first half. Remember his frosh year against OSU and TT? We blew those games that should have been victories. At least he is now only tight against top 5 competitors. It will come.
