This may have been covered in the Rice game thread, but I don't want to sift through five pages...... any chance we make him the starter and make his move to RB permanent? He sure looks good

Aggy said so weeks ago, but thought that was a dig against Texas offense. It turns out we got a lot of skills on offense.

I think that Duvernay could play running back with his strength
Certainly has the speed. Then Jake could be in the slot. But Rojo is playing well and Duvernay is playing well where he is at. But Duvernay would probably Excell at rb.

    Duvernay would be a stud.

Man do we need someone who can break a long run. Someone who scares the defense. Ingram doesn’t seem to have that skill set. Rojo might. Maybe Whittington, when he comes back. Most likely we’ll have to wait until Bijan gets here next year.

Interesting though, the offense is lethal without that threat because of Sam’s skill set and leadership, and our deep and talented WR group.

Johnson needs to be working at QB. We are in deep **** if Sam goes down. Shame Rising left. Very disappointed we didn't see Gbenda run the ball tonight.

I for one was down on Keontay but he still has that knee brace on. I'm hoping he gets better as time goes on and develops.

It was good seeing Daniel Young tonight. He needs five to ten touches per game

I thought Keontay still had a hangover the first couple of touches but than shook it off and looked great. Johnson may have more power but Keontay has more cutting and shiftiness. I trust Herman that he is no. 1. He was right on Sam when no one else, including me, agreed.

I don't know about "great". Serviceable I think is a better term. Alright maybe a little better than serviceable.

Ingram is OK. I mean a burst of wind will knock him down. Breaking tackles is not his strong suit.

I'm in the camp of "give Johnson a good share of touches until all the RBs are healthy again, and, if he keeps improving, even after that." I think he looks like a RB and shows great potential there.

Agree. I would get him 5 or so snaps at QB as well if the opportunity presents.

RJ needs to be QB if he can throw better than Thompson, and from what I've seen he should be able to do that. Imagine that running ability unleashed at the QB position when WRs aren't open !! Surely he is as accurate as Sam, or why would we even offer him at QB ? Sam is Sam ,but you can argue the fact he is not a consistent QB. Many many of his throws are off. Sam is good because of all his other qualities. RJ isn't as big , but he has the ablity to take it to the house and toughness to break tackles. If he can throw he should be a QB in this offense behind Sam.

The two reasons Thompson is #2 is he throws better and knows the entire playbook.

Sam's? Did you happen to catch the game last night? ;)

On the season, Sam is completing 73.2 % of his passes, averaging 8.5 yard per attempt, with 11 TDs and no interceptions. By way of comparison, in his senior year, Colt McCoy (whom I consider the gold standard) completed 70.6% of his passes., averaging 7.5 yards per attempt.

    Agree with stanhin....

Many , many,.....? Try being a QB sometime and go through what they experience.
Everything has to click to a science and few teams have that. It takes time to mesh the ingredients. Tom will get them there and they are certainly closer to that than anytime with Strong. Never would have happened.

Holy Cow! Are you blind? Sam is one of the top 5 QB's in the country right now! Last night was the best performance by a UT QB in the last 10 years! For the first time since 2009, I do not believe that we are ever "out of a game". Sam was surgical last night.

I pretty much take issue with most of what you’re saying.

“Surely he is as accurate as Sam.”

Sam’s accuracy has improved year over year and game over game. He’s very accurate on the short throws, and based on what we saw last night, his long passes are getting better too.

“...he is not a consistent QB.”

Are you watching the same games I am watching? Sam is a masterful game manager and it is obvious that the game has slowed down for him. For my money — and I was a huge critic until after the Maryland game last year, I believe Sam to be one of the best QBs in the country.

Sam is the franchise, and he can take us
to the promised land. With an improving defense, this team will be elite.

Sam was under quite a bit of pressure last week by LSU. Even though the OL played great, often times the pocket was collapsing as Sam was throwing. There was a lot of pressure even though it didn’t show up in the stats.

It’s ‘D’ we need help with, not QB. Biggest fear there is Sam getting injured.

Sam continues to get better. His 207 QBR last week was best I've seen since 2008 Colt although I didn't check it out. But Sam is turning into a very accurate passer. Some of the throws he made against LSU were outstanding and in very tight windows.

Amen to the positive comments regarding Sam. He is the leader and his performance can not be questioned except by the coaching staff.

Sam is by far the best Texas QB since Colt. I wouldn’t be suprised if he breaks Colts records and wins a Championship. The latter may just be wishful thinking, but I think this team can get there eventually.

We need to remain positive in our comments and the attitude needs to be positive and encouraging. Without a doubt he is the leader and best we've seen in a long time. Keep it up! Trust that he is health to lead without major injuries. At that time, I'm confident that the staff will know the next steps.

I agree that Sam has improved a great deal. I agree he is one of the best QBs in the country ( but not for his passing ). All the other things he does make him great, especially for the style offense Herman wants. I am watching the same games you are. I have seen him throw some very nice passes, some in tight windows; BUT I have also seen him throw some very off target throws that his WRs bail him out on, and poor throws as well. I know his stats look great, but if you re-watch those games WE have watched you will see what I'm talking about. Throws behind receiver, high, low, and many where if he places it better its an easy completion. The one Ingram dropped is one example...Should have been thrown toward the right shoulder where he wouldn't have had to turn toward the DB. Another...the throw behind Smith vs La Tech that should have gone to the house instead of on the ground. Throw to Duvernay vs Rice that was behind and low for a first down, should have been a throw leading him in stride and maybe a touchdown. If you re-watch you will find others..... Sam is getting better, and I love his grit and toughness. I was one of many who wanted to forget this kid after his Freshman year. Now I see how much he has improved ( hats off to Tom and Beck ). Its amazing. I agree he can lead us to a championship if our defense will step up. My post was mostly about RJ's QB potential , and the fact he needs to be a QB if he can throw. We can recruit RBs....For our offense to work we have to have a QB who can scare defenses with their feet...like Sam does....

Why anyone would question Sam’s passing competence is surprising to me. My gosh, he set a school record for passes without an interception last year, and he was masterful against arguably the best defense we will see this year.

Is he Tom Brady? No. But he is damn good, and he can do things that Brady can’t, like run, and escape.

MajesticII, I’m not sure what it will take to impress you but for me, I am convinced that Texas now has an elite QB and leader that will take us as far as the defense can support.

What I think some people lack is not "did you see the Texas games?" but do you watch what 99% of other colleges are playing with at QB? Mentioning Tom Brady is the point.

People watch one college game, UT, and then even when the QB goes 25 for 30, they say, "wow, did you see those 5 passes?" Then they watch NFL games--usually not the lousy teams, but the Tom Brady's the Drew Brees's, or whatever (i.e., the finest passers in the history of the professional game), and they say, "wow, why isn't our UT quarterback like that?"

Also, the fan can't always see why a pass is to one side or the other. Maybe you have to go through a gap in the DL's raised, or about to be raised, arms. Maybe the LB is coming across from the other direction and must be avoided. Maybe for that specific play--say, 3rd and 11--it is more important to play safe and just get the catch and the first down than to lead the man into what may be open field, or may be a safety that is going to blast your WR. Maybe you threw the ball before the WR made a break, and he broke differently than the play was planned. Maybe your pocket is collapsing and you have .1 seconds to decide, so you throw kind of high and easy to your tallest WR and let him figure it out.

    It's not a video game.
