What we do know is it was not one incident and then he tightened the program. It went on for years at Baylor.

I thought the fact that Pepper-Hamilton was specifically instructed to not put anything in writing says a lot about the atmosphere at Baylor in general.

Yes and as I have posted previously, I was talking to Baylor board members about it in 89-91. That is why I wanted and still want a a clean slate in McLennan County.

When Briles reported it to his superiors, why was nothing done, other than the victim lost her scholarship?

I have never understood some of the unsubstantiated accusations against Briles. Seems to me that he is a shady guy with a few demons. He and many others screwed the pooch because of the longtime sin of bad conduct......the cover up. They just can’t learn.

To suggest that he commited a crime against a student is not a proven fact. To suggest that he did nothing to protect the safety of these students and failed in this endeavor for the protection of his thugs and the almighty “W’s”, that appears to be correct assessment, and it justifies the ruination of his coaching career. I am not sure anyone knows all of the dirty little details, but no honorable man looks the other way when women are being assaulted.

    This phrase is misused

Does a child molesting teacher deserve a 2nd chance to teach? No way.

    2nd chance at life. Yes
2nd chance to make a living Yes

Everyone does not deserve a 2nd chance to do the exact same job.

If it walks like a cheater, talks like a cheater, wins like a cheater and hangs around other cheaters.........there is a good chance it's a cheater.

Or as the 9 year old son of a friend of mine said during the Probation-Mania 80's, "A winner never cheats but a cheater is generally the host team in the Cotton Bowl".

I'm on board with this. During the Penn State scandal, you heard Paterno's name more often than Sandusky. It was like people were angrier at Paterno, who never touched a kid, than they were at the guy who molested kids.

There's a lot of ire directed at Briles because he might've not done enough after, uh, what's-his-name, yeah, some guy committed rape. Maybe a few guys.
Why aren't we talking about the rapist(s) instead?

A football coach isn't supposed to be judge, jury, and executioner. Briles might be the kind of guy who figures if something criminal is occurring, not his job. That's what the police are for.

Could he have done more? Probably. Do I want him coaching my team? No. But let's be realistic about how much hate he deserves, at least based on the facts available.

EDIT: Sabrehorn pointed out at least one player was convicted, changed post accordingly. Previously I'd forgotten if anyone ever was, which is sort of my point - shouldn't that be what we remember?

At least one Baylor player went to prison.

It is my understanding that Briles did report one of the first incidents to his superiors (maybe Provost). and she was shut down by the administration. Perhaps the timing was off or bad, but what was reported was he took appropriate action under Baylor protocols. My opinion, he should have called the accused in, gotten his story, and acted if the Provost didn't.

I know it's double digits, but not sure how many other than the one death that occurred before Briles arrived.

IIRC, there were a number that were settled out of court and most likely the victims had to sign a non-disclosure agreement that basically prevents them from discussing the situation, like a “gag order”. Doesn’t mean they, the victim, didn’t have a good case, only that Baylor was willing to pay out the money to protect the integrity/reputation of the university.

Back in the day wasn't the rule if you transfer you sit a year?
No appeal, nothing, but sit a year and then play.
I don't see anything wrong with that rule. I don't think kids would suffer lifelong scars by missing a year of HS sports.
I think the transfer rate to certain High Schools would go down dramatically.

Holy geebus!! I'm not going to defend this scumbag, but some of y'all already have him swinging from a tree. Scumbag or not doesn't mean he's guilty...although I would bet he is at some level given his history.

Do we even know if these "1 and up to 4" new students are contributing or playing? I have no idea and neither do y'all, but some of you are acting like they are all state players who mysteriously moved to town. Heck, maybe they are which would be very curious, but we don't know. Also, to what a few others have said, it is a free country and if anyone moves into the district they can play. I don't believe those couple of players take a team from one win to blowing teams out 57-0.

One highlight of the Pepper Hamilton white wash* highlights how football staffers were allowed to "interview" some of the victims and failed to report it up, and thwarted cases from going to criminal investigation.

Do you all suffer from memory loss or are you just not familiar with the details of that "report"

I don't think Art Briles was 100% to blame. I do think he was scapegoated a bit but there is no honor amongst thieves and Art got his just deserts. Its just too bad others escaped. However Its impossible to fathom how Art Briles was not a willing participant in the machine that was churning this **** out.

If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, its a duck.

Art Briles is a career scumbag who has no business mentoring young people.

Does that = swinging from a tree? No

Me too. So calling him a willing cog is being generous and giving him the benefit of the doubt. Even in the best case scenario, that makes him a scumbag.

If the full Pepper Hamilton Report were released, we might be surprised at the extent of Briles involvement or at least the extent his knowledge of and failure to act on the assault matters.

Ask yourself why that entire report wasn't released?

To protect Briles? They threw him under the bus with a large check to shut him up.

To protect players? Since when do they give a **** about the kids?

To avoid lawsuits? They were writing checks left and right to shut people up.

What's left? BOR, BMD, Ken Starr, administrators

Y'all take yoour pick, I made mine in the early 90s

Just because they threw Briles under rah bus does not mean he was not culpable. The two are not mutually exclusive.

There are email exchanges between Briles and his staff showing Briles to Briles to be real scum including him questioning why the girl who reported one of the gang rapes was even hanging around bad dudes. As if the rape was her fault.

Yeah it's pretty dumb. A lot of baby-throwing-out-with-bathwater going on there.

Then you have someone whose family moves more than once, for the same reasons anyone else in the world moves, and they are effectively banned from sports for their junior and senior years?

Back to the OP, that article cited nothing in support of a cheating claim against Briles. Briles is a big-time name and a big-time on-field football coach, whatever else is true. The fact that his name would create a big stir in Mt. Vernon, and some parents might buy or rent a house in his district to join a bandwagon would not surprise me, even if he had nothing to do with it.

He even said a few months ago that when he got the offer, he had basically never heard of Mt. Vernon, which seemed odd for how much recruiting he must have done in East Texas. Knowing no facts, I would quicker assume that players followed him into the district that he had no knowledge of, rather than he brought them with him.

MT. VERNON, TEXAS (KLTV) - A District Executive Committee approved the eligibility of two Mount Vernon ISD football players.

It was reported a meeting for 7-3A DI took place at 10 a.m. Wednesday in regards to the eligibility of several student athletes, including members of Mt. Vernon’s football team.

The eligibility of two players was in question due to their residence. The students had transferred to Mt. Vernon and were living in a trailer park as they transitioned from Colorado.

Six members were allowed to vote on the issue. After reviewing the facts, three voted in favor of Mt. Vernon and were satisfied the students met the requirements while three others abstained.

The results of the vote will now be sent to UIL for review.

The DEC is made up of superintendents from various other districts. The 7-3A D1 chair is Superintendent Sidney Harrist with Atlanta ISD.

Earlier in 2019, Mt. Vernon ISD made a decision many considered controversial by choosing former Baylor Head Coach Art Briles to take over the football program. The program is currently 3-0 this season. The team beat Canton 57-0 on Sept. 13.

I wonder if they are brothers?

Briles learned how to cheat from WT Stapler at Sweetwater. Briles was a better coach than Stapler but never could shake the cheating he learned as an assistant.
