Introducing Dallas University (f/k/a SMU)

A new college football power has arisen in the State of Texas. They go by "Dallas University", or simply "Dallas." This is in spite of the fact they are located in University Park, and not Dallas. Don't confuse them with "The University of Dallas", that's a Catholic school that is also not located in Dallas. After defeating No. 25 TCU at TCU, they are bound to overtake aTm in the State of Texas power rankings, putting them second to only UT. They have a very good QB, who I think would be starting at UT if we didn't have Sam.

Their logo is a big "D" with a horse running through it. It's unclear whether their mascot is the "Stallions" or just the "Big Ds" (in either case, they must think their players have a future in the adult film industry after their football days are over). Their fight song is "She'll be coming around the mountain when she comes." It doesn't take too much imagination to see how that ties into the adult film theme of Dallas U.

    Here are some pics:

What’s the story with dropping the SMU name?

Also not to be confused with UT Dallas, which is also not located in Dallas.

Beats me, but below are some possible theories.

    1. SMU has taken notice of TCU's success in getting Fort Worth and other Tarrant County area people behind their team. This was not the case decades ago, when a stockyards worker (or other 'regular guy') in Fort Worth viewed TCU as a bunch of rich snobs that he did not want to associate with in any way. SMU is promoting itself as Dallas' team for college football. To mimic TCU's success, they have to consistently win and frequently appear in the top 25. So basically, it's a marketing gimic to get Dallas folks with no ties to SMU to support the team. They're trying hard to get the Dallas waiters, waitresses, Wal-Mart workers, carpenters, electricians, cops, school teachers, and short order cooks cheering for SMU.

This is the most likely reason, so Occam's Razor...

    2. Much of the sports world still remembers the SMU death penalty. The name "SMU" is toxic in the world of sports. They're turning over a new leaf and labeling themselves "Dallas" instead of SMU. "Dallas" has a mostly positive image nationwide with some negatives in there. It's been 55 years or so since the Kennedy assassination, and most people only know "R.L. Thornton" as the name of a freeway, not the arch-segregationist mayor of Dallas who was allegedly involved at a high level in a nefarious fraternal organization.

    3. It's an effort to distance the university and the sports program from anything Methodist, after the Methodist Church publicly affirmed their traditional biblical stance on gay marriage earlier this year. This assumes the PC types run the show at SMU, which they may or may not. But remember, many faculty members and students had fits when the GW Bush library and research center was announced, so this explanation is not out of the realm of possibility.

To annoy them and to refuse to play into this marketing gimmick, announcers could just start referring to them as “Southern Methodist.”

“First down Southern Methodist at the Southern Methodist 41 yard line.”

“Now for a commercial break with Southern Methodist up by 7.”

TCU and SMU, despite being chartered by religious organizations, never struck me as being “church schools” in the manner of Baylor or BYU.

But as stated above, the emphasis on”Dallas” is obviously rebranding and marketing. We’ll see how well it works.

No matter how well they do, they're not getting invited to the Big 12--that much is sure.

Could it be a one-time uniform that emphasized the Dallas-Ft Worth rivalry?

That is, not a permanent new image.

    Hmmmmmmm

You may be onto something there.

On edit—I just looked it up, and they used the “Dallas” jerseys and helmets against UNT also.

The Arlington Cowboys, f/k/a the Irving Cowboys, lol

I’ll say this for the Houston Texans: not only do they play in Houston, their stadium is Inside The Loop Houston.

Fort Worth is where the West begins, and Dallas is where the East ends.

They are sporting a new look; and playing with a new swag. But are certainly not a pig. Ask TCU.

This ‘Dallas’ team should get some consideration for the Top 25 poll.

For what it is worth (not much I realize) but the triple D is the official symbol of the City of Dallas.

SMU only replaced the marijuana leaves with the pony.

Rick Hart had stated that they'll probably roll those uniforms out whenever they play an "in-state rival" to show the university's connection to the city and claim some kind of ownership for regional rivalries. So... UNT and TCU? Will they wear them against UH? They didn't wear them against Texas State, but maybe San Marcos isn't as big as Denton so they didn't feel the need to gloat that day? Confusing criteria. Chop's thoughts about it echo mine.

I like the look but it should say "Ponies" or just SMU. The Triple-D is an outdated symbol of Dallas.

Side thoughts: I always had good things to say about Buechele when he was here, but now that he's gone it's far easier to objectively evaluate his shortcomings. I don't care if he's a gym rat or good teammate if he throws easy passes into the ground, or stares down receivers way worse than Swoopes/Case/Ash ever did. He would be a great system QB with quick hitters if he was given the opportunity and the OL to be able to do it. SMU's line is FAR improved from where it was the last couple years, but their runners benefit more from that than Shane has. His end zone pick was horrendous when you consider that he had open receivers elsewhere.

I REALLY want him to stick it to Chuck Strong this week, although Strong gave him the opportunity to start against ND as a true freshman and I'm sure Shane appreciates that. Outside of East Carolina, there are no cupcakes for SMU when you consider their relative strength in the AAC. They are very even against UH, Tulane, Tulsa, and Temple. And probably a slight step behind Navy and Memphis. They'll end up 8-4 and in one of the higher-profile AAC bowl games: Hawaii Bowl or something like it.

I just stopped by to say that while I very much approve of the new uniforms, I'm troubled that they stopped short of true greatness....

No team should go into the top 25 looking anything less than their best. Make this happen Dallas :hookem:

I dont like the new logo - the whole idea seems poorly thought out, even retarded

That said ..... there are currently only 5 teams (out of 130) in 2019 to date that have 4 FBS wins:
    #1 Clemson
    #2 Alabama
    #5 tOSU
    #7 Auburn
    Unranked SMU

And only 3 of these^ teams have beaten a Top 25 Opponent --
    #1 Clemson
    #7 Auburn
    Unranked SMU

Time to start giving them some props

Dallas should at least get some consideration for the Top 25. Another win or two and they'll creep into the rankings. There are some decent teams left on their schedule, so I'm not counting on Dallas to run the table.

They could also start calling Ford Stadium "The Dallas Palace".

Q: How do you know the new neighbor lady is a grad of Dallas U?

A: She puts on makeup, jewelry, heels, and a fur coat to walk to the curb and check the mailbox.

As a former Methodist Youth Group member, I am shocked how retro they have become.

On the other hand, I do remember how our Minister would preach on Sunday that just coming to church on Sunday was not good enough to be a good Christian. The other six days of the week counted also. They got rid of him after his first year although he was very effective and inspiring speaker and was a very jolly fellow.
