Is it time to start looking at Scott Frost differently?

I have to admit that I thought Nebraska hiring Scott Frost was a no brainer when Nebraska hired him. They are horrible. Yes, they are probably severely lacking in talent, but that is no explanation for getting ran out of the stadium by Minnesota. Are we supposed to believe that Minnesota has that much more talent than Nebraska? Or, do we have to wonder if Scott Frost had even better than assumed talent at UCF? I’m beginning to think that getting the scraps and leftovers of Florida schools is still better talent than you get to coach at Nebraska. Not to mention you have to play more difficult teams in the Big Ten. Their quarterback is horrible!

Nebraska is done as a power team, might as well rename them Wyoming. That is their peer now. They have no recruiting base and no one elite wants to go to play football in that state from places like Texas California or Florida. Their best bet is to hire the head coach at Army and bring back the option football tradition they lost. Or maybe hire the pirate and pair him up with up and coming DC. Other than that, they are never coming back.

It's not time to reevaluate Scott Frost. It's time to reevaluate Nebraska. Bo Pelini was probably the high water mark they'll see in the new era of everyone being on TV instead of just a handful of teams around the country (of which Nebraska was one, along with maybe a dozen others pre-ESPN).

To put it another way, in today's landscape, what exactly gives Nebraska a competitive edge over Kansas or Kansas State? Tradition (which the kids being recruited today, even their parents probably didn't witness), and a rabid fan base. That's not enough.

Nebraska is facing the same issue Texas faced when they hired Strong - the gap between Power 5 coaches and Group of 5 coaches is very wide. The job is more demanding and there is no comparison in the overall Conference strength. (As weak as the $EC East is - it is still much stronger than the strongest MWC or AAC division.) You learn more as a Power 5 Coordinator than you do as a Group of 5 HC.

They have no players or depth. When they left the Big 12, they lost Texas recruiting. They have no identity. They aren't smash mouth because they were trying to keep up in the Big 12. They aren't air raid either. They just exist. May take another 5-7 years to convince big uglies and power backs to go there.
They also must of shut down, those phony scholarships for walk ons and roid usage back in the day.

I understand that shutting down the walk-on/county scholarship program was one of the requirements for joining the Big12. Schools were limited to two Prop 48s, I believe.

So does the Big 10 have more relaxed rules regarding these scholarships? By the way, Nebraska needs a master recruiter, which is the reason I've always thought they should have hired Mack Brown after we let him go...

And blamed Texas even though the vote was 10:2 or 11:1.

Big 10 has stiff requirements. NU has no recruiting base period. I think KState has a better chance of relevance. At least they know where to go to get talent.

Perhaps you have been following the Frost era recruiting closely and you think year 3 of "his players" will make a difference on the field?

I checked, because I couldn't remember, how UN finished recruiting for 2019. One ranking service rated them #18 which is pretty respectable given their current circumstances and new coach in season 2. Not sure how they are fairing so far with the 2020 class....

I think their concern is the 2019 team may only win 4-5 games. This on the heels of a losing record / winning only 4 games and no bowl in 2018.
