Fort Worth cop shoots a woman for looking out her window. Or at least, that's what seems to be the story. Link.

    Sounds bad.

And a huge reason why no one should call the cops to "help out".

I know several FW cops. I guess I can see why some think this might be funny, like LH, but I'm surprised you did.

Sounds like a racially explosive situation in FW. The shooting PO has resigned albeit the Police Chief said they would have been fired for violation of a couple key use of force policies. The Chief claimed the shooting would be investigated as if the officer was still on administrative leave.

I suspect this officer ****** up royally. Not going to say this was racially motivated as its unclear the officer was aware of the womans race. How the FW police department (Sheriff?) handles this will be viewed with a racism lense though. Hopefully they do what's right.

As I watched this through the policeman's body cam, I don't think anyone could tell what color the person inside was. I may stand corrected when a clearer image is shown, but all I saw was a black window with his flashlight beam.
That being said, it is a travesty that he didn't identify himself loudly, and several times. She would have been justified, in my opinion, of shooting him. I live alone, and if I saw and heard some strange man rattling on my door at 2:30 am, you can bet I would at least have my pistola out and at the ready.

Her death itself is beyond tragic, but the fact that she was a black woman makes it all the worse, unfortunately. I honestly think this was the case of a twitchy cop, (not even on the force for 2 years) who has absolutely no right, or temperament, to be a policeman, and an innocent woman shot dead for no reason.
I am saddened that when it first happened, my my very first reaction was, "please don't let it be a black person".
I wouldn't have thought that even 5 years ago.

The video is completely ridiculous. The cop is nosing around the outside of the house, and he looks in the window. He shouts, "put your hands up! Show me your hands!" He basically fired while he was getting out the last "hands." The poor lady never had a chance.

Why the hell didn't he just go to the door?

They'll end up charging him with criminally negligent homicide or manslaughter. And they'll end up writing the family a check as well they should.

He walked right past TWO open doors and a locked gate into the backyard while never announcing himself as a policeman. This video will be used for eons for training on what NOT to do when doing a wellness check.

    Former cop.

Now that he has murdered an innocent bystander, how long before he is arrested and charged? He obviously won’t answer the police questions, per his forthcoming counsel.

I saw this on CBS11 the other night when the story first broke ... I was shocked.

I'm saddened that there is this cognitive dissonance with the Jean case. The ONLY thing that is shared by these two events are that two people are dead who should not be.

The neighbor about broke down during the interview, bless his heart. Blaming himself "If I hadn't called the cops, she'd still be alive."

That will be heard again where it really matters.

What I'd like to know is what the cops were told about the call ... that they didn't have at least one of them go to the front door tells me they didn't receive just a welfare call of an elderly lady at 0230.

But then ... if they were told this was a potentially violent/criminal situation why were there only two officers? Should have been at least 4; 2 at the front, 2 at the back for "runners." Either way, IDing themselves as police is job one or you invite taking fire.

@Mr. Deez made a GREAT point, though ... despite the possibly bad information on the condition of the call ... the microseconds between the (unidentified) command and the discharge was WOEFULLY short. Even if he had the woman's attention, she couldn't have complied that fast.

It's gonna be a mighty articulation to give this one the appearance of "a good shoot."

    Condolences to the family.

... and I wish we'd leave race out of this.

Unless it's found this cop was a grand dragon of the K K K underground ... leave that junk at the door. It's not helpful to anyone, let alone justice for this woman/family nor proper behavior for the rest of us.

This seems like the correct course of action. Police should be held accountable too. In this case the officer ACTED like the assaulter.

He's going to argue that he feared for his life, and let's be honest. He probably did, because I'm sure she startled him. And of course, the lighting is poor, so he has no idea if she's armed. I suspect that she wasn't, which is why he took the photo of the gun on the table rather than in her hand.

The problem he has is that he put himself in the position to be afraid by acting unreasonably. If instead of nosing around and peeking into windows like a cat burglar or a peeping Tom, he had just gone to the door and announced his presence like a normal cop, there would have been no problem.

Another argument he could make is that he didn't actually intend to fire the gun. If he can credibly make that argument, that could make the difference between murder and manslaughterer or criminally negligent homicide.

I wondered about this with the Guyger case as well. Suppose Jean or this woman shot the officer. Both would have reasonably strong arguments that it was justified.

The racial element comes in to drive a political narrative and ultimately a political agenda. If people are thinking, "it always seems to be black people who get shot by the police," that's going to foster political racial unity, anger, and fear on the part of blacks and of course, guilt and shame on the part of whites. And of course, both tend to be conducive to voting Democratic and supporting their policy agenda.

Of course, statistically we know that whites do get shot by the police. In fact, it happens far more often than blacks getting shot (though blacks are disproportionately shot). However, if you only got your information from the national news, what would you assume? You'd assume that blacks get shot all the time and that whites virtually never get shot.

Do I think that cops are quicker to the trigger with blacks? Probably so. Of course, most on the Left just presume that racial animus is the cause of it and then use that to demonize cops and anybody who is willing to defend a cop. Could all cops be latter day Nathan Bedford Forrests? I suppose, but that doesn't explain why black officers are also more likely to shoot blacks. Maybe it's something far more rational like statistics and profiling.

It's like flying your plane. If you see a group of dudes who all look like Mohammed Atta and speak Arabic get on your plane and see two old ladies get on your plane, which ones make you think, "we better keep that cockpit door locked and I hope there's an air marshal on board." It's the Atta lookalikes. You could be wrong. Those grandmas might be late-life converts who storm the cockpit, slit your throat, and hijack the plane. But your mind is naturally going to play the odds and assume that the Atta lookalikes are the more likely troublemakers. Is that fair to them? No. Odds are, they're just regular guys, but is it fair to fault you for making that assumption? Definitely not. The stakes are too high to worry about stuff like that.

If blacks get shot more it's because, in proportion to the population, blacks commit more crimes not because they are black. That's what happens when 13% of the population commits 38% of the crimes other than homicides, and 52% of the homicides. There was a fairly recent study that showed whites get shot more often than blacks in similar situations. The last thing black people need to do is jump on the anti-cop bandwagon because the victims of black offenders are usually other black people.

But you are, again, correct about the desired political narrative. We see SH and LH jump on the white cop wrongly shoots black person bandwagon every chance they get, but when have they ever pointed out the massive black on black crime problem, or the issue that blacks disproportionately commit crimes? That would be "never" of course.

    Mr. Deez Beer Prophet

You are correct. The similar situation factor is something that is frequently ignored. The overwhelming majority of the time, people shot by police are resisting, threatening, running from, or otherwise not cooperating with the police. Admittedly, I haven't seen numbers on that so I'm open to correction, but I would guess that blacks do this more often than whites do.

To be fair, though I have seen SH and LH criticize individual officers who have arguably screwed up in a specific situation, I haven't seen them overtly bring race into it or peddle the "systemic racism" trope to attack law enforcement in general. I can't guarantee that they haven't, but I can't recall such an occurrence.

And now, the blindingly brilliant insight on cops from LongestHorn:

LongestHorn overtly brings race into it, and apparently believes all American cops are wannabe killers, some just haven't had the chance to live out their murderous dreams yet. I offered him the chance to modify his blanket condemnation to "some cops", and he flatly refused.
