Here is an SB article noting a few key offensive and defensive drive stats and where UT ranks in the Big12 (hint: near top in offensive and at or near bottom in defensive).

    Personal caveats..
I believe the D played a pretty good game -missed tackles aside - last week all things considered. It was more O than D letdown IMHO....left too much pressure to keep holding off a potent offense.

Also worth noting LSUs offensive performance skews our defensive #s when compared to other Big12 teams...but if the defense didn't want that in the stats, they should have performed better in that game.

Some of these teams have yet to play OU, also.

Interesting Baylor's stats show weighted towards defense vs offense

Updated Big 12 offensive and defensive drive metrics

Thought it might spark some debate or analysis

it's hard to separate missed tackles from defensive performance, but i'm picking up what you're laying down.

i think they should bring back Hadnot and have them practice tackling him all week. Or Henry Melton. They need to run into a physical force and not bounce off half the time.

Excepting the missed tackles...I agree they did an okay job on defense.

right after the game that was my feeling as well. But after marinating on this game for a week, I think it was a total team failure. Offense and defense both equally to blame. The offense failed to take advantage of turnovers in the first half. When the offense finally strung together some scoring drives, the defense laid down.

There may have been a couple of individuals on either side of the ball that had respectable showings. But there is not a single unit that performed to expectations as a whole.

While the team has played a tougher schedule than most (to this point), these metrics mostly indicate an above-average offense and a below-average defense. Which makes the team sound, on the whole, painfully average.

Just my opinion. I would place blame like this.

    1. Offensive line- 9 sacks tells me they just weren't prepared for what blowu was doing.

    2. Special teams- look at our drive chart. We had the ball 11 times in that game. 6 of those drives started inside our own 15 yard line. Bone headed mistake after bone headed mistake. Most of which came from Devon Duverney.

    3. Pass rush - ZERO sacks is an inexcusable stat when we were supposed to have the more physical line and the greater talent.

    4. Tackling - We've beaten this to death but you can't have this many missed tackles and win a ball game.

Now look really close at this. Offensive line and special teams are coaching issues that can be corrected. If we make it to the Big 12 title game, we have a legit shot at fixing these issues.

Pass rush is a talent issue, we might be able to blitz a little better but we just can't get pressure without bringing extra guys.

Tackling will get better when we get healthier.

We aren't going to stop their offense, but we can do a better job of not stopping our own offense with stupid mistakes on special teams and actually blocking some people.

I don't think the LSU/OU games are the best barometer for where we belong in the college football landscape. One was arguably the loudest home game we've had in years, and the other is a rivalry game at a neutral site in which records are usually thrown out the window.

I think the OK State and WVU games are better measuring sticks. We kind of relied on turnovers in both games to pull them out, and had lots of issues from tackling to the OL. If we're marginally better than both of those teams, then we're probably somewhere between #20-25 in the nation in total prowess, if not worse. It's still preferable to the Chuck Strong days, and maybe the same as some of Mack's "lesser" years like 2000 or 2013. If this is part of the rebuild, then ok, but if this is the watermark for where we think we're heading, then I'm not completely satisfied.

I read an Orangebloods article that said that this year's defense, thru 6 games, is statistically the worse in Texas history! Let that sink in. We're worse than the Manny Diaz years!

We're giving up almost 500 yards per game! Everybody except Rice has moved the ball on us. La Tech had 400 yards passing. Okie Lite racked up big yards and, of course, LSU and Blow U killed it. And it's not all passing, we're allowing almost 5 yards per rush!

You have to be able to stop something; either stop them on the ground or through the air. We can't do either. The poor offense has to score almost every possession or we don't win.

Orlando's seat should be getting red hot about now.

I never thought it could be worse than that Manny Diaz defense.

To even be comparable to that defense is concerning.

(and yes - I know we have played better offenses and have injuries)

Manny D? I always gave Strong credit for our worst defensive stats ever.
