I didn’t read one post from the game thread.
UT was littered with Freshmen. I’m happy with any W just as I am unhappy with any moral loss.
That said- I get the negative comments that are assuredly there.
    Sam is king. Dudes ice.
    Hook em.
And geez- Michael Griffin I love you, but geez shut up.

Griffin had the courage to say what everyone was thinking. Ricky didn’t, which surprised me. Kudos to Griffin.

Griff basically said, when he was playing they had a clue. What's wrong with that? Needed to be said.

My point is every week Griffin is “the sky is falling” guy and that’s every week.
The way he argued with Ricky on the biggest injury impact being Whittington? And called Ricky out for naming Sterns? Huh?
For me, he has made the pregame hard to watch as he listens to no one and makes sarcastic comments when anyone makes a point that is not his own.

Sam's performance harkened back to his freshman season. Some real gems with some poor choices and bad throws. Throwing behind receivers you have been playing with for three years is not good

But he is from Austin so all flaws are unnoticed or forgiven or blamed on others

    Huh?
300 yds 4 TD,, ran for almost 100 yard. okay
The only people that I blame, and this is an ongoing UT tradition with me, is the ridiculous Longhorn fans
Fans who can’t throw a 10 yard out accurately, would take one hit that Sam took and be on the Questionable list, but are quick to point out flaws it’s almost laughable
Sams #10 out of 135 QBs in rating.
Total Quarterback Rating - College Football - ESPN
And not that this matter to the complaining group here , but Sams #3 out of 135 QB’s in pass EPA.
    Copied and pasted:
EPA is the measure of a play's impact on the score of the game. An individual player's EPA is the sum of the EPA of the plays in which that player was directly involved. Being directly involved is defined as an offensive player who ran, threw, or kicked the ball, was targeted by a pass, or flagged for a penalty.

You can’t be serious. Sam was beaten to a pulp through the first game last year by almost everyone, including me.

San is the heart and soul of this team and for my money, he has been performing at a high level. Did you see the final drive last night?

Ricky isn't "knee jerk" like fans are. Ricky understands what happens in real life when you lose 5-6 starters on one side of the ball. "next man up" is coach speak. there is no one on this planet with a shred of integrity that would say our back up QBs should be just as successful as Sam. Losing half of the defensive starters can't help but have an impact. it's irrational to contend otherwise.

it was better than his freshman year, but i agree he wasn't on his best game

this is rubbish. it's because his overall impact is still significant. and he has a huge heart out there, that he's given latitude.

    Austin???

I love Ricky but he is running interference for Herman IMO.

The issue is coaching on that side of the ball. As I have said in other posts, last year — with two senior corners, the best DE in the league, Roach, Nelson & Hager, Sterns, Foster and Jones, Gary Johnson — we collapsed late against OU, OSU and WVA, and lost two out of the three games.

I would dispute the contention that we have lost “5-6” starters. Here’s the depth chart going info La Tech. And don’t forget, because there was hardly any separation between those players, Herman wouldn’t even name has starting corners until late in the week.

    Malcolm Roach - Playing
    Keondre Coburn - Playing
    Ta'Quon Graham - Playing
    Joseph Ossai - Playing
    Ayodele Adeoye - Playing
    Jeffrey McCulloch - Replaced?
Kobe Boyce -or- 38 D'Shawn Jamison 5 - Jamison is playing.
Caden Sterns - Injured, but he had been struggling prior.
    Brandon Jones - Playing
Jalen Green - Injured, but is Cook a step down?
    BJ Foster - Playing injured.

My point is that practically speaking we have lost perhaps 2-3, but all have been at our deepest position except McCulloch...who I didn’t even know was hurt. I assumed that he had been replaced.

    Who said that?

Hager does not belong on the list. While his senior season was a bust on the field, his lockerroom presence was beneficial.

everyone who sticks to the "next man up" as a valid scientific argument. those who argue that "injuries are no excuse" for a poor performance.

some backups are almost as good as the starters. most are not, and are backups for a reason. you lose half of your defense, i think objective reality assumes a drop in performance. you lose your best player on defense (Sterns), I think objective reality assumes a drop in performance.

I absolutely disagree with this assessment. Sterns made a splash early “last year.” This year, before he was hurt, Sterns had been struggling from what I could tell. I would place a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order, this season, including Jones, Ossai, Chris Brown (now injured), probably Foster and perhaps Coburn.

    Actually I can see Ossai.

As long as Sterns has been injured (he had a high ankle injury in mid august and played hurt for a few games), i think people are not seeing the impact of injuries on the defense.

Not sure why this post is being pooped. I was at the game, 15 yd line and 5th row from the field. I saw close up he missed on several throws most of the time behind open receivers. He did hit a couple of really good ones too, but I too thought he was inconsistent. Thank goodness we were playing Kansas so he could get the stats because that defense was awful. He also is holding on to the ball way too long. A couple times he seemed to stare at the receiver for 3 seconds hoping his receiver of choice opened up. Had it been, say, OU again on Saturday he might have been taken off the field on a stretcher. Something just seemed off to me.

Agree on the Sam critique, but he has never been great on all throws, that’s just Sam. on Sterns I disagree with duke, I think that his presence would be a huge plus - but I do recognize he has missed some crucial tackles. Nonetheless his coverage, while maybe not stellar is vastly better than what we have gotten lately. Particularly with the injured Foster.

Sam is awesome. He may not be the greatest passer, and has issues with his accuracy at times, but he is a **** good QB. That INT he threw was ugly, but he more than made up for it later.

Next man up is all good, but our secondary situation is getting to the point where there ain't no men left.... getting very thin with walking wounded playing, adding to our defensive woes.
