How about just holding the players accountable for proper tacking? That would be a start, along with telling then when someone enters your zone you should cover them. Foster still keeps on trying to make the big hit rather than wrapping up and whiffs. On top of that he had another PF and should have been called for another on stanley at the goal line.

It really isn't that difficult. They aren't executing the most basic stuff you learn in Middle School.

Not 48 points and nearly 600 total yards impact. I thought they would score but I was thinking 24-28 points, not 48?!?

I’ve had a night to sleep on it. Missed the last 4 minutes but had it on the radio. Hey the Astros won in the bottom of the 9th! So there is that. But as for Todd Orlando. It’s time for a change. I don’t know the timing and what TO can do to prepare for TCU in FW. But we will lose that game guaranteed unless TO changes his schemes dramatically or he is replaced. Since he is the only DC on the staff it’s his word against the replacements, whoever that is. Probably the worst week of TH career this week. TO has been glaringly deficient at recruiting a D Line who can pressure a QB. All he wants are fast DB’s for his schemes so now tgat the entire secondary is hurt. TO has no D Line to carry the D. As Austin Bill says we have not recruited any true D Ends, only Tackles. They aren’t fast enough. Then the blitz schemes are getting redundant and predictable. So Erbody is throwing over the middle on 3rd and anything. I thought we would get better on D as this season wore on, preseason. But we’re getting a lot worse. It’s beyond injuries. TH has tough decisions to make this week. He needs outside advisors, there is lots of TO film from which to advise. He’s got 6 days for answers. TH is a good coach and I don’t think it’s on him but TO will sink his ship pronto if he does not do something about this crisis! He has a crisis in week 8. Let’s see how he responds! This week will define his career the next 3-5 years. It could kill his career if he sits on his hands.

Had this debacle of a game on LHN on the iPad while watching the ‘Stros on the big TV. Thank goodness for Sam and Dicker to bail us out of the defensive no-show and from there I could focus on the later innings of a classic baseball game. AC raises some good points above but I find myself also considering the injuries and lack of depth. This same DC had his squad completely contain a very good Georgia team in Atlanta. How could we have fallen so far? I have to wonder what adjustments we’ll make for TCU?

but but but Canzez has a new OC, and Texas had no film on him, and he wrote a book on RPO. How do you stop that?

But seriously, Texas has whiffed on a number of 4-5* pass rushing DE's. I'm not sure why, but I think having top recruiting classes while whiffing of 1 or 2 positions was one of the reasons for Mack's downfall. With Mack it was OL, with TH it is DE. I have no confidence of Texas even making a bowl game without a significant improvement in the pass rush. Any decent QB can sit back and pick a defense apart with all day to throw.

And I can't understand why Roach was a better pass rusher as a freshman than he is now.

    Heck yes it matters
OU also had a great offensive line that didnt get the qb sacked 9 times in a game heisman winner at qb lamb and brown at wr and 2 damn good rbs ie he knew he could score enough points every single game and have a shot to win, we don’t have that courtesy. I get it the dude sucks I want him out also I also wanted beck out after year the difference between beck and Orlando Herman can run the offense and has proven he can call plays who on the defensive staff can do that right if Orlando is gone. Riley replaced stoops with O Neil the guy has been a head coach as well as a dc and position coach do we have anyone on the defensive staff with those credentials? Herman will make some changes just don’t think he will can the guy now.

So you thought incorrectly as did I. I got over their splendid effort. Ehlinger and Herman both recorded a record offensive game. Be thankful, not remorseful.

    Just watched the highlights.

Every time we did a delayed blitz up the middle the KU QB was ready for it and made us pay. No one even got near the QB...

I am sure he's telling his guys they have to get better at shedding blocks and getting to the QB faster, but this is not a player/execution issue. Its the offense knowing TO's tendencies and exploiting them.

Its the Carl Reese donut hole defense but with faster players. Every more ineffective though.

Because he was a LB as a freshman? He did not play DE.

Perhaps it might help for some injured veter DB to heal? We are really beat up and young at DB presently.

Injuries hurt as well. But there are schematic, strategic, fundamental things wrong with this defense. For one no one on the defensive staff can teach zone coverage. And has been pointed out TO blitzes guys from 10 yards away. They have no chance of getting to the QB and they leave the whole middle of the field open.

True on the worst in Texas history but the last 2 years have not been much better. For some reason Poona and Chris could get push. Not sure if Coburn is being held back or is not as productive. The big difference between Tom and our hated neighbors up north is Lincoln saw he had a problem with Mike Stoops and made a decision. They are much better off for that!

One more thing on the blitz issue. Blitzing slow guys seems to have little impact again because they cant get to the QB in time. Have posted on other threads that Herman is getting guys that fit what he wants but he is sacrificing speed. Our DL and LBs are slow as molasses in the winter.

Our best and most reliable DB is Jones, and except for the end of the game yesterday, BJ has been healthy. Chris Brown was playing well so there’s that. Sterns wasn’t having a good year to my eyes. Sophomore swoon. But yes, there has been attrition on the back end...our deepest position. But did the problems “this year” start with the injuries? Not really.

The primary issue with our defense is scheme and coaching, pure and simple. I’ve come to the opinion as expressed on another thread that Orlando, probably a great guy who the players like, has reached his ceiling. Put 50% future NFL starters on the roster and sure, his D will be better. But perhaps not by that much.

I just don’t believe that he has the skill set for the job in this conference, and the longer TH avoids to obvious, the worse it will be for the team. Sure, there might be a great effort here and there. Perhaps TCU. But the underlying problem will continue to exist until a change is made.

    This is Manny Diaz rewind...

I am starting to think that some of you don't believe TO deserves his $ 2,000,000.00
plus per year. $ 166,666.66. per game. Plus bonuses! Just saying!

Who would you guess like as the new DC that’s a reasonable hire? If Tennessee cans Pruitt I wouldn’t have a problem with that hire, I like the guy at wisky also.

No...Its worse than the Manny Diaz Story. Mack did not have any great loyalty to Diaz and fired him when it was apparent he was going to get him fired. Tom Herman adores Orlando and is more loyal to him than Mack was to Greg Davis. Herman will go down in flames before firing his good buddy, and will take Texas with him. he won't even consider hiring a tutor for him. After this season recruits will see the writing on the wall and start to write Texas off. I told my wife we were going to have problems when I heard Orlando was experimenting with putting a bunch of DBs on the field and dropping 8 into coverage stuff....especially after our defense looked so good with a four man front in the Sugar Bowl. Why would you spend time with that crap instead of perfecting what worked so well ? Maybe he knew our front seven was going to suck ? IDK .....

Amazing TO was a hot HC commodity last January. Now, he’s been ditched to the college football garbage heap. I don’t see a DC change til after the season. But, unless this D wakes up from their nightmare in the next few weeks, TO will be looking for a realtor & a moving truck during the holidays. No way Herman can hang onto him going into next year. If he does (assuming no D improvement), TO will become Herman’s Greg Davis....a slow boat to his own demise.

When you put 40/50 lbs on a frame at 18-22 years of age its gonna slow you down, and that is what we do with the guys we bring in. Bulk 'em up at the expense of quickness and speed. We look great stepping of the bus, and then the game starts. SMDH.

CDC will not fire Tom this year. Tom will use the injury excuse into next season. After next season the axe may fall because OU isn't going anywhere, OSU's QB will be older and wiser and in Stillwater, Baylor will be just as good if they hold onto their coach, Tech will be into the second year of their new hire as well as KSU, KU will get us at Miles' house, LSU will rape us in Death Valley. THIS YEAR was our best chance to make some noise with so many new faces in the conference, ( injuries happened ) and it looks like we screwed the pooch.

The injury problems are worse than most people are giving credit for.

A walk on safety played last night during a close conference game. They are one injury away from pulling DBs out of the stands.

The pass rush sucks and so does tackling but Kansas stayed close all night because of long 3rd down conversions abusing kids that we didn’t expect to play this year. There are problems but don’t discount the injuries. A few guys come back and we will improve a lot

I’m referring to Herman firing Orlando. TH will be here at least thru 2021...the year 100% of the players are his in his 5th year. If we finish with mediocre results in 20 & 21, lose to OU both years, yada yada, TH could be toast. OK, I’m NOT endorsing firing him after 5 years, just projecting a scenario that might have the Longhorn nation lynch mob on fire.

BJ Foster is not healthy. Hamstring and shoulder issues, which do not allow him to raise his arm above shoulder level (at least against OU).

I question the weight we're allowing our DEs to reach. It seems like Graham and Roach played better when they were lighter.
