WTF??? KU guy has the ball out with his hands on it, but not tucked. Brewer makes a great play, lands on the KU guys arms and secures the ball before the KU guy ever gets the ball to his chest. Somehow they get the ball. Huge play that made no sense. Clearly didn't make a football move with the ball so how is just having your hands on it, recovery?

And to make it worse the ref who insisted that it was Kansas ball was the sideline judge. He wasn’t the closest ref. He made the same (wrong) initial call as the announcers. Typical Big 12 officiating

According to the rules: "The ball is in player possession when a player has the ball firmly in his grasp by holding or controlling it while contacting the ground inbounds."

Refs in general seem to give possession to the team with clear possession once the pile is removed. However, here, the KU player had the ball firmly in his grasp initially (though VERY briefly). I think it was the right call with not enough to overturn the call on the field. Probably could have gone either way.

Yeah, that's how I saw it - rules don't say you have to clutch it to your chest to have possession. It was very close and I think if both players had grabbed it simultaneously, we would have kept the ball due to having it more clearly possessed. But their guy got the ball about half a second sooner and we didn't get it in our possession until just after their guy was already down with the ball.

The call was wrong initially but its a hard one to overturn on replay which is why the whole "call stands" instead of "call confirmed" was used. There were some headscratcher calls last night.

Actually according to Big 12 refs, you only have to have control of the player who has control of the football to recover the fumble.

shouldn't have used that term. My point was just sticking your hand on top of the ball is not possession. You have to have control of the ball which he never did.

Even so, did the KU player control it? Seemed like the ball was still moving when the Texas player jumped on it.

Regardless why was Jake Smith making that dumbass move? He had a first down.

and he should have had both arms tightly covering the ball.

Good point. I am not sure he did, but I don't think there was anything to overturn the call.

Adequate officials won't allow the players to "rooster fight" for the ball, but rather make a quick call instead of waiting 3-4 minutes. Then again, the Big XII has no "adequate officials, instead having shared **** from the BigSky, WAC, & MWC, making the Big XII the only P5 conference sharing incompetence with the "if you can name three members of that **** conference you win an autograph picture of Walleye Burks".
