Well, then explain the reasoning for the delayed blitz every stinking 3rd and long if you support it? Enlighten me with how that decision is going to ever be successful because it seems physically impossible to me and it sure the hell isn't working so I have quite a bit of empirical evidence that it won't in the future injuries or healthy. Maybe once in a blue moon if you are also getting pressure off the edge and the QB is having to step up. But certainly not when the QB is expecting it.
wadster, The delayed blitz by a DB should & will work more often than not unless the defense doesn't know how to disguise it, or in Orlando's case you put it on the jumbotron before the opponent breaks the huddle. Why did the zone blitz work against OU, get Bomar killed, and result in a TD? Because OU never knew what was coming. I have said many times before - Todd Orlando couldn't disguise a blade of dead St Augustine grass in a 100 acre wheat field. Either that or our kids are too damn dumb to run it correctly. Since we have 15 DBs making the same mistake over and over, I choose to believe it is coaching.
I played DB in the 80’s but we defended a lot of option teams and I had the pitch man (RB). I was man to man if we blitzed. This was HS Football in the mid 80’s. Not too comparable to today. But if I had been asked to zone blitz would have been tough to get there, only if I’m blind side and well disguised. I think pass rush is a major problem for the secondary. Omenihue and Hager would get there last year and if not they collapsed the pocket. Not happening whatsoever this year, add in the injuries and youth on the back end and wallah, freakin train wreck!
They came right a way and their DL and LBs were looping and twisting etc...They had our OL's heads spinning....
So Inside Texas has now waddled into this issue as well. They now also say the possibility of coaching changes is on the table, no matter what Herman says or wants. This is all at the BMD level, of course, the folks Del Conte listens to because he has to. And he now knows (if he did not already) those folks are "quite unhappy" with the last 2 games (ou/Kansas). Supposedly Herman has been hearing about it since LSU. These are the people who forked out millions on the stadium project. IT says Herman lacks the same goodwill with this older, richer class relative to Mack Brown and Dodds
I think a couple of heads will roll. The Scapegoats will be the DL coach and one of the DB coaches. That will pacify the BMD and CDC until things don't change next year. Maybe the Special teams coach could get the axe as well. But that will be it.
Oh, and there is some grumbling we might be about to lose some recruits/commits -- Due to negative recruiting from guys already on campus.... Not good if true
Interesting, and not surprising. Nobody is satisfied with the defensive play, least of all those who pour big bucks into the program and (rightfully) demand the best talent on the coaching staff at Texas. We should accept nothing less.
On campus ? Players or other recruits ? I thought everyone had bought into "the culture". Guess not if players are being negative.
I was thinking about McKnight and the shoulder injury problem. First off, it could be a freak coincidence, but maybe not. I suffered from nagging shoulder problems when I played sports. The problem for me stemmed from working out my chest and shoulders more than working out my upper back, it created an imbalance pulling my arm forward towards my chest muscles. The fix for me was to lay off the chest workout and do more upper back workouts until I restored the balance in my upper body. I have no idea if this is what is causing many of the shoulder problems, but it wouldn't surprise me. I told you guys in the past, I think bench press is the most useless lift for any football player. If you want to impress me, show me how many push ups you can do. It's the best lift in the world for building chest muscles while also working out your core and strengthening you upper back muscles. Anyway, it's all conjecture, I don't have inside information as to why things are going the way they are. I've just had some experience with shoulder problems in my past and some of it looks very familiar to me.
Due tonegative recruiting from guysalready oncampus.... That would bother me more than anything else we’ve discussed. Not specifically sure what it could all mean but I’m guessing current players bad mouthing coaches, the program, or the school. Hurts.
Transfer portal will tell all. Already Shepherd is heading out I'm sure more is to follow. We shall see.
More or less the same story from both TFB and OB -- there is some tension in the locker room between certain players and certain coaches. A starter on offense skipped practice this week because of it
I dont understand. We lose to OU & LSU, play a close game with Kansas and we hear things that indicate the locker room might be crumbling? Transfers, players skipping practice, etc. I get we have a terrible defense but could that be causing the offense to be thinking "screw you, pull your weight" and modern day drama queens can't handle the pressure? Is there something else we dont know about?
i agree Vol, makes me really curious and start to speculate. Could the coaches be wanting to try something new the players don’t want to do or vise versa? Just what the heck is it?
If true, this is very troubling. When one side of the ball basically sucks, it will almost always create friction. (I know. Captain Obvious here.) You can’t orchestrate chemistry. It’s organic. When Herman talks about “the love between the players, “ I always cringe. Fix the defense and I believe that we will see less issues, and less defections.
I seem to remember many here wanting to fire Beck when we were suffering through multiple injuries on an Oline that was weak to start with and thus could do basically nothing on O as a result. Things have moved in our favor there now because we have some semblance of health, talent and experience. The current D is no different. Multiple injuries on a D that was questionable to start with because of youth and the loss of several upper classman starters. I’d like to see any Defensive Coordinator in the country do any better in similar circumstances. And I don’t wanna hear about how it’s all about not using a 4 man front...
The problem is we do it every damn 3rd and long. Every time. You can't disguise it when you do it every friggin time. Like I said you can do it every once in a while, but not as your primary play call on 3rd and long. I'm still pissed at TO. And now we get our 1st defensive decommit because these guys realize he has no clue on how to fix this mess.
Being able to disguise the defense has NOTHING to do with injuries and everything to do with coaching, teaching, training. I invite you to find and watch the tape of Bill Bradley's Baylor defense against Bob Stoops undefeated offense. Baylor didn't have a single player that could start on D for OU, and probably not for us that year. Problem is that if Herman's college friend wouldn't take the job, who do you get?
Unfortunately this might be a Herman thing. When we got up by 14 on Kansas, the energy and concentration just fell off from the team and fans. Like put it in cruise control, because we can relax and still blow them out. But KU came to play for 60 minutes. You bring in Clemson here this week, and it's a close game, where I would not be surprised with a win. We can play with anyone. Yet we could just as easily get beat at TCU or Baylor. Lack of focus and energy, mentality, just for a second is the difference between making plays and not. This happens a lot with Herman's teams.
