I was for going for it. Of course, I wanted a better play call.

My hand is down, I said go.
But I’m not a hypocrite. When Sam scored on a 4th down run against the best defense we’ve faced in 10 years, in the biggest game we have played in in 10 years, I didn’t yell at the coaching decision to let him run.
When it works we high 5 and clap.
When it doesn’t, our coach is an idiot.

I said kick. Told wife was too early and we hadn’t established any dominance up front, kick it.

    Too early. Kick it.

Herman’s MO is go for it. If he makes it (rarely does) we win. If we miss it, we lose.

We went for it twice and got 7 instead of 6. Net gain, so that's not why we lost.

We should have kicked the field goal. I was for kicking.

Look at it this way, if it was 20-20 instead of 21-20, Herman and Beck would have tried to score on our last drive instead of basically just giving Iowa State the ball back.

I was good with it. Didn't know we would try to pussyfoot our way through Iowa State tho.

The whole gameplan was garbage. I want Herman to be the guy, but he's a little like Mack, he needs to be the CEO and hire a couple of VPs he can trust to run the O and D. If he realizes that, he's the coach that leads us back to the promised land. If not, who's next?

I said Kick it. It's always about points in this league and Hermans teams can't hold a lead anyways. You know every Herman game is going to be close.
I also would of kicked the other field goal on 4th and 5, when we were down 20-14...Somehow Sam made a miracle throw under duress.

I think we would of been better down 20-17 than up 21-20 with Hermans team. Sam with the ball on a final drive wins or ties it.

That may be true, but that's not an argument for scoring fewer points actually being better.

We were 12 of 15 on 4th down last year, so almost certainly positive.

Since we never get under center to QB sneak we should have kicked the FG. Our SLOW developing runs are trash...especially when Sam runs the ball like he is scared to hum it up in there, and merely tippy-toes around like he has been doing.

Going for it was the right call. Herman has plenty of problems right now but his understanding of 4th down math is not one of them. Most of the cliches and tenets about "take the sure points" are decades old and came from a time where defense predominated and players played both ways. Blindly choosing sure points over what is on average more points doesn't make much sense, especially early in the game (the "it's early so you must always kick" is backwards. Early on you want the greatest number of points possible, only late do you worry about matching particular numbers based on the leading/trailing margin).

The particular plays chosen on 4th down haven't always been the best - although that's hard to judge since most people retroactively decide the call was good or bad based on if it worked or not. But it's been obvious for a while that the "QB sweep to the right side from the shotgun" isn't working this year, despite being almost a sure thing last year. Whether defenses adjusted, our OL regressed, or we really miss having Watson and Beck be the lead blockers in the backfield, or some combination of the above, I'm not sure.

In general this staff seems slow to adjust to stuff that clearly isn't working, even way beyond just a "it happened to not work a couple of times" fluke. It took them until late in the 3rd in the KSU game to make the defensive changes most of us were calling for by the end of the 1st quarter. It took them until late in the 3rd in the ISU game to make the offensive changes most of us were calling for at halftime if not sooner.

It's like, ok I get they know way more about football than us, but then how come they keep doing the same thing we advocate for, only with a big delay, and then immediately stuff starts working like we all said it would much earlier. That's a problem.

In the ISU game, they would put 8 in the box and Sam, Keontay and Rochan had dismal results. The OL w Angilau out was not the same effective line that played KSU. The endgame stats also reflect the poor running results

I was all in on kicking it and getting on the scoreboard. I suspected strongly that if we went for it, it'd be an Ehlinger keeper against a stacked defensive line, and sadly, that's what it was. I was hoping for a fake into the line and then throw a pass over the drawn-in defense. Alas . . .

(However, in looking at the play-by-play, we'd gained more than two yards on about 2/3 of our running plays up to that point, so maybe going for it wasn't the wrong choice. At that point in the game, I based my hope that we'd kick it on the belief that our running game hadn't really done much yet. As it turns out, we just hadn't had any huge running plays, but we'd gotten a lot of runs in the 3-5 yard range.)

    Maj,

You want to try a 4th and Goal sneak against Baylor? You can be under center or shotgun your choice. I would pay big money to see that!

Rational thinking is only allowed at Hornpumpers.com
Though I must say I was entirely for kicking there and viewed that play as the beginning of the end.

@Statalyzer I disagree with the first part of your post which we have both already discussed ad nauseam.

I am in complete agreement with the second part of your post. I do not know why our staff's adjustments are so incredibly slow, but they really really are slow to adjust. You can include our special teams from week-to-week as well. There has been some partial adjustment, but it has been very slow in implementation.
