What went wrong was that Beck and/or Herman didn't call plays that maximized our odds of getting a couple of first downs, which were what we needed in order to burn clock.

if not now ... then it'll be never.

well, perhaps a Route 66 ... but UCLA was a good team that year.

AFA BO's first post ... wow. Tea Sipper elite there ... and why we get harassed for that persona.

I know we have problems all across the board, but really, if we are ranking our problems in any order I'm going to replace assistants Here is where I'm starting.

    1. Todd Orlando - I like the guy and maybe this is Herman more than Todd, but this defense sucks and it has Orlando's finger print all over it.

    2. Wareheim - He never should have been kept after year 1 and now he is responsible for the crap show we call Special teams.

    3. Mehringer - This is mostly speculation based on what I am hearing by way of rumors in the locker room.

    4. Washington - It's his corners that have been getting toasted all year long. yes they were young, and I knew we would be feeling the growing pains, but I don't see any growth, I don't see anyone getting better.

    5. Beck - It's hard for me to put him here because the offense is still effective to a degree but it is too damn predictable. when our opponent knows what we are doing before we snap the ball then there is a problem, a big problem. Beck is a hell of a recruiter and a good QB coach, but he is the OC and we need one that strikes fear in defenses.

I think the biggest question out there, isn't that we need change, but who do we get.

For DC, I think we either make a run at Aranda, but it's more likely he gets a head coaching gig after this year, or we turn the defense over to Ash who already is here and has had all season to get to know our players. For Special teams I'd turn it over to Beady. Wr is a no brainer for me, I'd bring back Samples. Finally and most important, for DB coach I'd go hard after the LSU, Georgia, or Florida DB coaches, and possibly bring a player or two with them.

As for OC, I have no one in mind, maybe do what LSU did and find a genius in the NFL Or possibly take the OC from Ohio State. Who knows except we need a guy that will scare the hell out of everyone.

AB, I agree with the five points, and since Sabre is laid up, I will point out that: a) Herman tried for Aranda and failed; and b) Bill Bradley is sitting out in the Hill Country looking for something to do.

What has Beaty done that makes you think he is better than who we have? Only been a true OC at Rice, where they scored about 2 TDs a game against really good defenses, and sucked at Kansas too. I have to ask how he managed to get a HC job in the first place, and why the heck would Herman hire him to consult about anything ?
Why would Aranda leave a top 5 program, where his HC is probably going to get a raise and extended contract, for a HC who is on the hot-seat ?

What is more pressing is what did Aranda know or think to not come to Texas vs LSU in the first place? That is what troubles me.

Do you know for a fact Herman pulled out the stops to get him ? I'm sure $$$$ was a big part of the deal. LSU held off A&M when they came calling.
Besides...LSU's defense isn't all that good. Beck's offense ate them up when we played them.

Just going off what I read on here about it. If TH didn't go after him, that seems odd.

I know what I'd like to see happen this offseason with coaching changes, etc. But at this point, my base feeling is nothing will change. However, we, and I suspect most of the Longhorn Nation of fans, believe changes are necessary after watching the product on the field starting with the OU game and going forward. Inclusion of these topics/issues are necessary as part of the conversation CDC has with TH. Part of the focus may very well be topics such as who stays and whether certain coaches have to go, hiring replacements and how much will it cost to get them to Austin. Seems that since MB left, we've moved from shopping on 5th Avenue to looking in Macy's Bargain Basement. The business adage applies, "You get what you pay for."

Gotta disagree. I don’t remember anyone questioning the Herman hire. There may have been one or two but it was probably less than 1% of the people on this Board. The consensus everywhere was that Herman was the obvious choice and I don’t believe that there were any other serious candidates.

We can and do question — now — whether or not Herman was the right choice, but to suggest that at the time there was any doubt would be rewriting history IMO.

Idk, Bill. Seems to me like defense has rebounded a bit .. looking more like last year a bit since starters have begun working back into rotation...offense trending very badly of late.
Idk if Orlando needs to go or not, but I certainly wouldn't start there.

I believe that both coordinators need to go, with this caveat. If TO has his D play outstanding this weekend and next, I might move to an “on the fence” position. But that seems unlikely.

    DC, in this order:

    1. Bill Bradley. Please, finally!
    2. Jerry Gray, if they can persuade him.
    3. Muschamp if SC let’s him go.

    OC

I just don’t know who. People on this Board don’t like Morris but he was considered a genius while at Clemson.

Applewhite. Don’t laugh. I would actually prefer Applewhite over Beck.

But again, I really don’t know who might be out there.

Bradley doesn’t have a degree. Texas won’t hire him.

I know. It’s stupid. We need to change the rule...but we won’t.

I have said before and will until hell freezes over. The Athletic Department signs a consulting contract with "Palestine's Best, LLC" for services.

Who cares how he Herman responds to the press. Texas pays him big bucks and we needed results this year to keep the recruiting momentum.

Wholesale changes needed now at the coordinator level.

    OFFENSE:
A big fan of bringing Applewhite back to the 40 acres. There are many good reasons that Saban hired Major after Houston let him go.

Major was a smart and creative gamer and brought all of that to the table as an O coordinator. And he bleeds Orange, always has done so!

Currently we lack creativity and everyone knows what is coming.

Herman could make this call today and have him gameplanning for Tech!

    DEFENSE:
Pat Narduzzi. He can recruit and can scheme with all levels of talent based on the strength/weakness of each player. Superb game time management.

Herman will schmooze CDC with, " We need to keep stability in the program, and recruits have a relationship with the coaches on staff. Injuries and player execution were our problem. Winning is really really hard." If CDC says Herman needs to fire coaches to keep BMD happy, Tom will axe an assistant or two to keep them happy. It doesn't really matter since Tom has admitted he has the final say on what the "offense by committee" comes up with week to week and play to play. " This is our offense. We are not a Jack of all trades master of none offense."
Tom is right about the offense.
THAT is for **** sure. We can't master anything right now..... LOL
I'm fine with keeping Orlando if he changes his scheme to what we saw the last two weeks. The design was functional. When you hold good Big 12 offenses to 24 points, you are doing something.
The offense HAS to change or we need a QB who can operate the simple passing game we have. Sam is too eratic and has become hesitant with everything he does.
( VY was kind of un-coachable, so GDGD finally told Mack we needed to let VY be VY and it worked. ) Unfortunately Sam was coachable, and Herman and Beck coached the SAM out of Ehlinger this year. Maybe it was to protect him, but you can't do that and be successful. The running game is garbage, and it isn't due to talent on the OL or in the backfield. Its scheme.
Can we fire Herman for cause and not have to pay him $20 million ? What cause ??/ 'CAUSE he sucks. :lmao:
