Certainly not talking trash about a 17-18 year old kid, and I wish him well. But ever since we signed the 3 star out of Utah, I've had questions.
I don't think I'm insecure, nor am I about to let some internet smartass lead me to insecurity. I was just wondering out loud how good a 3-star recruit from Utah might be. And yes, that is me issuing an indictment against Utah high school talent that he plays against.
I wondered the same when I saw he was a 3-star from Utah. But then again I'm neither a coach nor a recruiter.
I want the kid. He's had a solid season and hope he ends up sticking here. Just because he's decommitted with coaching change, doesn't mean he's lost for good. Need to get coordinators announced before early signing day if possible.
Considering most of not all good coaches will be coaching up to the New Year I doubt we'll have much finalized until then. If we do I might be concerned we're settling for someone "with potential".
At this point I'm not sure if I care about commits leaving due to coaching changes. I sure would love it if they would all sign. I am sure no matter who we signed they would under perform with the most recent staff. We'll keep most and maybe lose a couple more. In the end it's the right decision to go another direction.
We need Robinson. Haven't had a top tier back in a long long time. I can't even remember a 5* commit since Gray and injury changed him for good unfortunately.
Darn. He’s got great film, tricky moves, and is freakishly strong for his size. He’ll probably end up all conference and leading his team in sacks 3-4 years down the road. As for this 3 star stuff. I bet he’s not rated any lower than Stills or some other DLs who have eaten our lunch In recent years. Andrej Karic was rated 3 stars until a few weeks ago. I suppose some folks don’t want him either. USC wants this guy., as does Oregon, Utah, and plenty of other strong programs. Utah is in the process of turning into something like another Hawaii in HS football. So they’re a small hotbed for talent in the trenches.
It's transition. You can't have it all when you're not successful. Hopefully the new choices right the recruiting ship Some losses a few new wins
Good DCs who took HC jobs and were fired are free agents right now, so we could grab one of them right now... Odem is available if he is good enough. His DC stat sheet looks pretty good. Morris was a good OC for Clemson, and he is available right now. We do need some splash hires to hold class together and maybe flipping others we want.
One always has to wonder about the lower stars from out of the way locales...are they lower rated due to an actual lack of talent or is it the out-of-the-limelight locale that leads to a suspected lack of competition? And it is always possible that there was some manner of non-analytic measurement recruiters doing the signing looked at (like larger family members and a suspicion that a kid will pack on some additional size between graduation and collegiate arrival). I don't know the answer to either of those but also know that we have seen (at Texas as well as other schools) where players would either be well-above or well-below the star ranking. The higher ranked kids sometimes had too much of a sense of entitlement whereas the lower star kids had a tremendous work ethic and demonstrated that they WANTED to be part of a program. Looking at the pictures I saw of this particular player, he seemed to be undersized... Regardless of what the coaches and recruiters saw or the reasons he is revisiting the recruitment process, I wish the kid well...better that he makes this decision NOW than next fall.
I have no doubts Fillinger is going to be a great player for whoever gets him. State of Utah has a lot of talented guys, most are Polynesian, but they produce a few players. Usually they produce about 20 top notch P5 level players each year. I have no doubts Fillinger can go toe to toe with anyone from the country and hold his own. I'm sorry to lose him, it sucks, but not unexpected. Get Alfred Collins and Texas should be good. Miss on him and we are in deep doo doo.
Well, obviously you did not watch any of the Corner Canyon games, but they did win state. Usually had a couple of high 250+ OL on him. Seems to be a lot of Samoans and other Polynesians in Utah, of which Fillinger is one. If you think he is truly still rated a 3 Star, yo have not been paying attention. This is him this summer while still only 16: Capiche?
Yeah, I guess all those decades of Mormon missionaries doing their missions in Polynesia has paid off on the football field as well as the mission field. Little did they know that the top island players would move to all over the Western half of the Mainland and eventually want to play for the hated Youts of U of Utah, USC, Oregon, Washington, etc instead of BYU. I’m probably biased, having lived in Hawaii for a number of years, but I’d say as a general principle, the more of these players we can get, the better (especially in the trenches).
Who cares, just go get some local farm boys that have some heart and passion for the game. This star rating bs is why we are in this hole. Get players that play with heart and have upside. You keep offering freshmen, sophs and juniors in HS? That is why we get so many pampered super stars , they coast all the way.
