I hope he saved all that money he was paid by us. Doubt he will land another HC position any time soon, at least not at the P5 or at D1 level.
I think everyone saw this coming. His trajectory at USF was established and it was definitely time to pull the plug. He's likely done as a head coach at any major university that cares about winning...it'll be interesting to see what he does next.
This can't be true. I bet that USF administration never really had his back. That's why he got couldn't win. Nothing he did, not his fault, fake news....
Zucker, Interesting scenario in that Strong had a minimal contract with the school, but a larger one with the Foundation. I can't believe that USF has a foundation. How many members? Tuning in a couple of their games, they dress out more players than they have fans in the stands.
@SabreHorn They actually have a pretty strong fanbase and were filling up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stadium under Leavitt. Charlie Strong killed attendance the last few years and the number of season ticket holders dropped tremendously (sound familiar?). The drop in revenue and support meant they had to pull the plug on Strong. USF also have some pretty active message boards. I think their issue is, I do not know how many big money donors they have though. Anyway, if they get a good coach and win again, I think they are a viable candidate to move up to P5 in the long run.
^^^^THIS!! Fans can boo and bash all they want, but until their dissatisfaction hit's and puts a dent in the coffers, nothing happens. College sports are a business, big business, and there's nothing like falling revenue and disappearing margins to spawn a change.
The stands were nearly empty in the few USF games I watched bits and pieces of. But poor Charlie. He's never treated fairly anywhere he goes...
I'm sure wanting to fill up the South end zone, and raise ticket prices played a roll in CDC putting the pressure on Tom to make some moves to make Texas fans interested again.
I don't think they have raised prices in about 3 years, so figured they would want to. With 7-5 surely they figured that was out the window for 2020, and they need a strong 2020 season to hit fans with one for 2021.
Charlie had his chances at the Golden Ring. Unfortunately, the tasks were too big for him. I liked him. But my guess is his head coaching future is exactly as bright as mine. Hope he lands somewhere that fits his talents.
I was going to say something along the lines of "we've just got to get better" but I was beat to the punch.
No, the ingredients are in the bowl...the bowl just never made it to the pan to get into the oven to get baked...
