I thought this was interesting. Should be a no brainers but I guess nowadays you have to spell it out. Preferred qualifications Experience as an offensive/defensive coach, creating and calling effective and successful strategies and plays. Guess you can't apply if you haven't had creative, effective, and successful strategies and plays.
I think we all know there are a multitude of qualified head coaches and even more qualified OC's and DC's in here. All you have to do is read the posts. Should be the only resume any potential employer needs.
Even if that "successful experience" is only playing the college and NFL football computer games, if you were successful, then put it down. I put down I was the DC for my son's grade school team for 3 years and won a the league championship each year. Someone with a sense of humor will read that and get a good laugh. But we know that Tom Herman already has his list of viable candidates, so who ever applies on-line will get the standard "thanks but no thanks" letter, or in my case a "please don't ever do that again" response. I'd like to be able to read some of those online applications for the humor factor.
Your post has inspired me Joe! I was the Head Coach of my son's flag football team when he was 8 and 9 years old. I developed offensive strategies each week, diagrammed plays on 3 x 5 cards for the offense to call plays in the huddle, created the Defense and weekly strategies, made game time adjustments, clapped, yelled a lot of encouragement and taught good sportsmanship. Therefore, I think I'm qualified to apply!
I coached a flag football team at Cimarroncita Ranch Camp in Northern MN in 1973, and we were very proficient. I’m pretty sure that a Dukesteer coached offense could score more than 3 points — over 59 minutes and 58 seconds — against Baylor. Think I’ll apply.
About 8 or 9 years ago I sat down with my nephews PlayStation and NCAA game and spent about two hours creating the dam fest team! Gave em all power, speed, strength, size etc..... he came home one day and I told him I made a team......of course I was PlayStation illiterate in his mind do he played mine! I believe it was 35-0 in the first quarter when he got pissed and ditched it!! He kept my team around for a while and would lure his friends into playing and they all got drilled and quit!!!! Can I put that on my resume?
I think I am the best choice for both OC and DC. When I was in college, a small Bible college in Houston Texas, I coached the freshman women to victory over the upper classmen (uh, classwomen) in the annual powderpuff flag football classic, 35 years ago. The upper classwomen always won the game handily..til I became the coach of the freshman. I was a last minute choice to be the coach, with one week til game day. We had one practice before game day. I taught both offense and defense in one practice. How to maintain gaps, how to block, keep your eye on the ball, how to ward off successful blocks, etc. We won the game 2 touchdowns to zero. So you see fellow hornfans it is I who is the best candidate for the OC and DC positions.
Here's the thing. It doesn't take a coach to know you have to be multiple. You can't do the same damn thing over and over and expect a different result. We got better on D not just because we got guys back, but because we didn't blitz every 3rd and long. Still telegraphed the blitz too much, but at least the O wasn't 100% sure what was coming. See any friggin moron knows that to vacate the middle of the field every time is suicide. TO got fired because he refused to learn. Put his corners on an island play after play. Even when you're starting 2 freshman corners. You see you don't need to have ever coached to realize the folly in that. Just watch a little football will tell you that.
On offense and defense a coach has to study their opponents to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Attack the weaknesses, but disguise how and from where the attack will come. The more a coach keeps the opponent off balance, the greater the probably of putting a check mark in the W column. But that seems to have been the basic flaw. The was little study of this and the O and D were too vanilla. The opponents knew what we were going to do since very little was disguised and almost no deception was worked in. Also, a three man front has its place, but not in short yardage early in the contest, and certainly not on every single down. I hope that changes for the bowl game, but at this point I doubt it.
I applied. I promised no more wide receiver screens. I lied, I was going to but didn't want to create a user id and password.
I was joking with my wife at breakfast this morning about applying and under qualifications/experience state that I've been fixing defense issues at Texas as the defensive keyboard coordinator for years. She almost spit out her water at the table.
I have successfully won over 75% of my games in Super Tecmo Bowl, which, at the time, had some of the best analytics available. I feel like only having only 8 offensive play options available per down helps me stand out as that is similar to what our team is used to seeing. I NEVER punted during a single game even if it was 4th down with 35 yards to go. I also didn't kick field goals. I know that most posters here feel like we need to move in a new direction, but I honestly feel like these strategies give me a huge leg up on other applicants.
