Rumor for now, but other boards are saying that Shepard has taken his name out of the transfer portal. Rumor is that the coach he had a problem with was fired, it's the same coach that just about ran off all our Wrs.

Wow, that would be a welcome change. This Mehringer ordeal should be a soap opera. Might even explain Bru's "homesickness."

If true that is significant and it may have implications for other players, including some recruits. Perhaps Mehringer was the source of the rumors discouraging other players to come to Texas.

My question is, how did Herman not know, or if he did, why didn’t he remove Mehringer during the season? The rumors were everywhere.

How in the world could Tom let that (a problematic coach undermining program) happen?!? We talked about this a bit back after TCU when rumors were circling. I bet you anything he didn't want to push someone out as it might give look if instability....bad move if so...bad move no matter what the explanation. A disruptive, problematic or undermining coach must go at once.

For a coach who came in to the program preaching alignment, Herman let Mehringer get extremely misaligned before he did anything about it. I don't understand the decision making process myself.

    This is all very interesting.

If this was what happened with Shepard (a big "if"), then...

Big Q: Why is a WR position coach riding and giving a bunch of sh%t to an OL? I would think the OC, OL coach, and HC would handle any issues with Shepard.

    Lazy,

There are schools out there which are like sinking ships, where the requirement for employment is breathing. Manny Diaz is one, Sumlin, UNM, among others

Having coached at Texas is a big step up for some places. He’ll land on his feet, if for no other reason than he’s so hard headed if he lands on his head, it’ll break the pavement.

Good point! I hadn't thought about Mehringer having an effect on Bru's leaving. But knowing what we've learned the last few days, the probability has gone up.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Mehringer firing might also explain other players or recruits wanting out.

    Jordan Pouncey transferred to FL.

Shepard was in the portal but announced he was staying after the firing.

Eagles skipping practice and being held out of the TCU game due to a "personal issue". A Mehringer issue?

Did part of Lil' Jordan going early to the draft have anything to do with Mehringer?

Garrett Wilson - 5 star WR from Westlake WAS coming to UT but switched to tOSU. Mehringer?

Bru McCoy transfer as pointed out....

Where there is smoke, there is fire.... seems to me TH ignored the smoke because Mehringer was his buddy.

Me thinks some of this contributed to attitudes and team chemistry and issues we were seeing on the field around the midseason point. Perhaps the little fire we were giving some of the transfers and decommits etc maybe should have been directed elsewhere, as they may have had legitimate observations/complaints at the time...and weren't just being flaky.

Citations, please? I never read anything about them.

In retrospect, one does have to wonder. Seems like Mehringer was Jekyll and Hyde: great recruiter but bad coach. I mean if it affected Shepherd who is OL, something must have been smoking.

1.) I think Pouncey hit his ceiling, but one wonders why he thinks he can do much better at FL. He ranked in the lower 800 in his class. Ethan is #88 in his class. I fear Jordan may find little happiness in FL.

2.) If Shepherd withdraws from the Portal, that will speak volumes.

3.) I think since Eagles blew up with Mehringer that week and missed the next day, this was a shot across Herman's bow. I am guessing Herman thanked Eagles for his input and asked him to stay the course until after the season when Herman could act. I wonder what a search of Mehringer's UT cell phone might reveal?

4.) Interesting question. Surely LJH wishes he had returned by now. I think following bad advice and bad agents probably was the determining factor. Both Mom and Dad were encouraging him to get his degree.

5.) Maybe yes, maybe no because Wilson had very tenuous ties to Austin. I would look instead at NJS because at one time this Summer he was seriously considering switching to UT. The aOSU receivers coach is considered an ace recruiter. Maybe Mookie Cooper? He never returned for his OV although promised through the summer and was always in Texas workout gear until he committed to aOSU.

6.) I wonder if Herman asked Helton for permission for a call to Bru to speak with him and wish him well in his recovery? Recruitment would not happen and I would imagine if Bru mentioned it, Herman would say we cannot talk about that but I would advise you to stay in any case. At one time, Bru was effusive in his praise of Mehringer even while committed to USC. I think Mehringer did go to LA on the expedition to re-recruit him, but that did not work despite that deep connection. Hmmmm ......

    Very interesting takes. Some thoughts:

    3) We really don’t know what happened (do we?) so it may or may not have been Mehringer related.

    4) If LJH stays, Duvernay doesn’t get moved to the slot, and doesn’t have one of the greatest seasons in Texas history. Further, I’ll bet that we might have lost another WR to the portal had LJH stayed.

    6) This seems old and wildly speculative to me. Further, I don’t believe that Herman could make such a call, nor should he. After all, we wouldn’t want other HCs calling our players.

3.) Has been recounted in the fan sites. The fact that it was Eagles birthday initially obscured the fact that there was boisterous confrontation between Mehringer and Eagles. Doubtless that Eagles and Herman had a come to Jesus discussion afterwards.

6.) Totally speculative that Herman would call Bru. But I bet he would like to know or does already really know now why Bru left.

I am disappointed about Floyd retiring.
I had high hopes for him. I am sure it was not a decision he wanted to make.
It is my perception he loves football but health trumps the game.
I wonder if Orlando ran his 3-3-5 scheme due to a lack of quality linebackers. Well no I guess that doesn't make sense.

I wonder if Duvernay (my favorite player) is considering not playing in the bowl game. A business decision. If he does play it's because he is a team player.

Keep in mind, he was or top recruiter and all these players came here because he recruited them - especially Bru. I think he won Rivals or Espn's Recruiter of the Year either last year or year before. Also, you can't put an OL transfer on the WR coach, that's a pretty big reach. Something must have happened though, see Eagles suspension. However, I doubt there would be an issue if Texas beat TCU, Iowa ST, and BU. I didn't hear anyone saying Washington should be fired (probably should since the lack of development at DB is painfully obvious) when Boyd got suspended last year for Okie State which costs us a W.

BUT, if true then Beck and Herman should have dealt with this before it escalated to the rumored levels. That's one of the jobs of a leader/manager in any type of organization. This falls on the Head Coach especially one that meets with the leadership council every Sunday and has 2 Senior WR's in that meeting.

All of the seniors except CJ have said they are playing in the Bowl game. As far as the 3-3-5, you actually need quality LB's to make it effective. That's a big issue on this team that isn't getting fixed anytime soon. Deli improved but Mitchell isn't a starter on any other team in Big 12 IMO. See BU and Iowa St who run similar schemes.

Handler, I'm really surprised you view Mitchell that way.
And you don't like McCullough, see potential in Gbenda?
I'm not promoting the 3/3/5...just curious about your view of our current linebackers and future potential.

Keep in mind that all these things are rumors from from 9.95ers and fan sites, but the rumor is that Mehringer used a racial slur and it got around and evidently Shepherd threatened to kill him. What ever happened, if Mehringer was kept just about every WR in the program would have entered the transfer portal.
