    11th hour of 11th day of 11th month 1918

On this day, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiegne, France.

    Blackbeard meets his demise..........

    November 22, 1718
Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is killed off North Carolina’s Outer Banks during a bloody battle with a British navy force sent from Virginia. Believed to be a native of England, Edward Teach likely began his pirating career in 1713, when he became a crewman aboard a Caribbean sloop commanded by pirate Benjamin Hornigold. In 1717, after Hornigold accepted an offer of general amnesty by the British crown and retired as a pirate, Teach took over a captured 26-gun French merchantman, increased its armament to 40 guns, and renamed it the Queen Anne’s Revenge. During the next six months, the Queen Anne’s Revenge served as the flagship of a pirate fleet featuring up to four vessels and more than 200 men. Teach became the most infamous pirate of his day, winning the popular name of Blackbeard for his long, dark beard, which he was said to light on fire during battles to intimidate his enemies. Blackbeard’s pirate forces terrorized the Caribbean and the southern coast of North America and were notorious for their cruelty. In May 1718, the Queen Anne’s Revenge and another vessel were shipwrecked, forcing Blackbeard to desert a third ship and most of his men because of a lack of supplies. With the single remaining ship, Blackbeard sailed to Bath in North Carolina and met with Governor Charles Eden. Eden agreed to pardon Blackbeard in exchange for a share of his sizable booty. At the request of North Carolina planters, Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia dispatched a British naval force under Lieutenant Robert Maynard to North Carolina to deal with Blackbeard. On November 22, Blackbeard’s forces were defeated and he was killed in a bloody battle of Ocracoke Island. Legend has it that Blackbeard, who captured more than 30 ships in his brief pirating career, received five musket-ball wounds and 20 sword lacerations before dying.

Afterward Japanese Admiral Yamamoto when congratulated on the success of the mission, Japanese Admiral Yamamoto replied, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

On December 16, 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven was probably born in Bonn, Electorate of Cologne, though there is no certainty of his actual day of birth (despite what Schroeder has been telling us for 55 years).
    He was baptized December 17.

Today in 1846, for better or worse, Republic of Texas President Anson Jones raised the US flag as Texas joins the Union.

On Sunday, March 6th, 1836, the siege of the Alamo ended following Santa Ana's pre-dawn attack. The battle lasted about an hour. By the time the sun rose, all of the Texan defenders had died. Santa Ana did not count on the resolve in the Texans, believing that a massacre would scare the rebels into submission. The reality of how wrong he was would come crashing down on him six weeks later at a little spot in east Texas called San Jacinto, where a new nation would be born.

not all of the Alamo defenders died that day. One of them got away to Port Lavaca and died of his wounds later; two more showed up in Arkansas a few days later, one of them seriously wounded, and told people there what happened before Houston found out; and Joe, Travis' slave/manservant lived for many years afterward.

And the men at San Jacinto were a lot more upset about the massacre of the Goliad men who had surrendered than they were about the Alamo defenders, who at least died in combat.

The distinguishing fact is, the men at Goliad surrendered on March 27th of 1836, were marched out and shot. The men at the Alamo died fighting and faceing and attacking force. According to historians, there may have been 4-5 men who surrendered at the Alamo including Crockett. According to some records found afterward, General Castrillón asked they, the 4-5 survivors, be spared, but Santa Ana would not hear of it. So, they were all either bayoneted or put to the sword including Crockett, but that has been argued over for years. I had heard of one wounded man escaping but died soon after due to the severity of his wounds, but I've not seen anything that would confirm the story. Also, another survivor, a man named Joe, who had been William Travis’ slave survived. While fighting alongside Travis and the other defenders, Joe was shot and bayoneted but lived, becoming the only adult male on the Texan side to survive the Alamo. That was an account given by Susanna Dickinson who along with her daughter, survived the battle. Joe was one of several slaves spared by the Mexicans, who opposed slavery. Essentially, all the combatants, except Joe, that fought at the Alamo, died. There were perhaps 15 survivors, women and children who were in the Alamo but did not fight.

As to the men at Goliad, they came under fire of the Mexican Army, but it wasn't until Mexican General Urrea with a large force was very close, that Fannin decided to retreat, even though Sam Houston had earlier sent word for him to fall back to Victoria. But, as he did with sending aid to the Alamo, Fannin hesitated, but did leave eventually. However, he came under fire and when Urrea's forces arrived, a truce and surrender was negotiated. The Texans were taken back to the fort at Goliad and imprisoned until March 27th when they were marched out and shot. An additional 40 men unable to march, were also shot. As with the Alamo defenders, their bodies were thrown into a mass grave and burned. Estimates range between 300-400 men were executed. If Fannin had taken his force to reinforce the Alamo garrison, then perhaps not all the men would have died at both the Alamo and Goliad. With Santa Ana tied down at the Alamo, perhaps Houston's army may have been able to approach and attack Santa Ana from the rear, perhaps wiping out or capturing the entire Mexican army. There will always be stories and rumors, like the Frenchman, Moses Rose, who claimed to be an Alamo survivor and did not cross over Travis's line in the sand, opting instead to leave and take his chances. His name was not on the rolls or list of defenders, but that by itself isn't proof he wasn't there at some point during the siege.

Thus, the difference is that a force of about half of what Fannin commanded, were all killed in battle at the Alamo. Although Fannin's me fought the Mexican forces during a retreat, when the main Mexican force showed up, they surrendered, laid down their weapons, and were executed. But, not on the 6th of March, but three weeks later on March 27th on a dusty road outside of Goliad. As such, the defenders at the Alamo were the first massacred and died fighting, which seem to be the ones thought of at this time of year.

    April 3, 1865
Confederate capital of Richmond is captured

Virginia falls to the Union, the most significant sign that the Confederacy is nearing its final days.
    For ten months, General Grant
had tried unsuccessfully to infiltrate the city. After Lee made a desperate attack against Fort Stedman along the Union line on March 25, Grant prepared for a major offensive. He struck at Five Forks on April 1, crushing the end of Lee’s line southwest of Petersburg. On April 2, the Yankees struck all along the Petersburg line, and the Confederates collapsed. On the morning of April 3, blue-coated troops entered the capital. Richmond was the holy grail of the Union war effort, the object of four years of campaigning.
