Hiring of Matt Rhule...

I thought this was an interesting piece on Baylor's AD and the hiring of Matt Rhule (from an Oklahoman site no less).
Seems like they basically went out and hired the anti-Briles...and still came out with winning football.
I'll say this, though. They're a good team, no doubt, but football is tricky business. Time will tell. They've won all of their nailbiters this year [some in amazing(miraculous?) fashion], so that helps.
Certainly not all scheme with them...
They are obviously a well-coached team.

OU football: Baylor wouldn't be waiting in the Big 12 title game without Mack Rhoades

I hope he stays at Baylor. Great coach and a good man. The conference needs more coaches like him.

Zero chance he stays at Baylor. He's going to get big time offers from every major program looking for a coach.

Rhule probably has too much integrity to come play for a school that didn’t know who he was until he moved 90-100 miles north of Austin.....

That pretty much applies to most of the FBS schools.

Yeah that doesn't sound like an integrity issue to me.

That's true of 99% of all coaches. The coaches who didn't change teams are very few once they got their skies up out of the water.

Give it another year, maybe two. Anything is "possible."

Rhule isn't going to a different Power-5 team. He'll go to the NFL. He was the runner-up for the Jets job last offseason. Someone will get the itchy HC firing mood and pluck Rhule up with little resistance. Baylor being "good" has been beneficial for the Big 12 this year, so it'll suck to lose Rhule in that regard, but I sure hated playing him this year. So did the team, apparently.

    Rhule is a PK.

    Where will he go?

ACC? st that other Baptist school, which can't match Baylor $$$. No school looking is as attractive as his deal at Baylor

SEC? Not an attractive deal on the horizon. Maybe to Florida when Mullen fails

PAC? Coaching turnover capitol of the NCAA

BigTen? Only Michigan & Ohio State are worth taking

ND? Possible except Rhule is Baptist

Houston's wannabe NFL team? That's where I'd put my money, but while McNair was a good guy, he surrounded his franchise with idiots. Wiil/can his son find the smarts to finally hire a qualified coach?

I bet he stays at BU 10+ years. He is from the Northeast but says his family really enjoys Waco. He will raise his kids first and we’ll see. Definitely good for the conference.

The religion thing is very overplayed at every school other than BYU and Notre Dame. I can guarantee that if he has a repeat of this season next year he will get a few great offers. I could see him going to USC or UCLA easily. Same with Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State or Virginia Tech or even Texas. If he is a good Baptist I could easily see him in South Carolina heart of Baptist country.

Lets face it, yes he is great for the conference and specifically Baylor, but I don't see them having the resources to keep him with so many big boy programs needing a quality coach.

The religion thing is overplayed, Bill (at least in regards to schools).
I'd say especially the "Baptist " angle. i don't think many people these days say "I'm Baptist"...other than to reference which church they go to.
That church/denomination/community has changed quite a bit over the last 10 years or so in my observation (They've been influenced by non-denominational and Charismatic trends, as well as secular forces. Let's be honest, most religious-affiliated schools these days are only loosely related to the God/faith/values they were once founded on...unfortunately. And I mean no disrespect to the individuals within those entities to which this indictment doesn't apply. When talking about an individual, these things still matter greatly, and there are many high-profile and successful coaches who are devout in their faith, wear it right up front, and would cite it first as their greatest influence on how they run their program. Not sure about Rhule personally, but it wouldn't surprise me.

As I stated before Rhule is a PK.

Any coach at Baylor or Wake Forest has to be a Baptist. The same as any coach at ND has to be a Catholic. Baylor uses the "Baptist" to recruit. particularly the inner cities.

You are correct about non denominational churches expanding away from what I'll call "traditional" doctrine. Two of the fifty largest in America are Woodlands and COF. Mark and Kerry are sons of Demond, who built Champions Forest Baptist into a megachurch. The percentage of members reared in the Catholic Church of each is approaching 40%; again supporting your post.

There are certain public schools with unwritten requirements. Arkansas is one. Jerry Jones "took over" and the Hogs wound up with Chad Morris, who couldn't recruit, couldn't build a staff, couldn't coach what he had.

Revert to poultry, mattresses, and gasoline for the power. Johnny pretty much controls Washington County, he is friends with the Waltons, who are not really involved with athletic politics. It was Johnny that forced Frank Broyles to hire Malzahn out of Springdale HS. Gus was to Coach Broyles as Fred was to Coach Royal.

Not sure about that. I doubt seriously the women’s BB coach is a Baptist. Shoot, when I was a student there in the 80’s the President was a Presbyterian.

In the last 20+ years, it is the first question asked about a candidate for either position. I have actually had members of their BOR, as well as people funding scholarships, ask me about candidates and that always includes, "is he Baptist".

And, yes, Kim Mulkey is a member of the Baptist church - I leave it at that.

I stand corrected on that point, Sabre. Thanks for the insight.
I think it is an odd thing..I'll leave it at that.

As someone that supported Baylor, as well as Texas until Baylor selected a certain president, AD, and coaches, I do not necessarily support their decisions. As I've said for decades, "If you have two Baptists together, you have a major difference of opinion. If you have three Baptists together, you have at least one splinter group."

You left off Dallas, but that's probably because Jerrah is even more incompetent than the boobs running the Texans.

3 Super Bowl trophies say maybe not. Granted all three were with Jimmy's players, but Jerry still wrote the checks.

See there's that money thing...Jerry has money he should win...Texas has money they should win....Writing checks does not "coach up".....

That is actually encouraging to hear. I took my son there recently for a prospective college visit and was surprised how much they were advertising as a Christian University. When I was there 35 years ago there was a movement to pull away from the Texas Baptist Convention.

Liberty is probably the only D-1 University that adheres to Southern Baptist doctrine in their teachings and faculty choices. Even Belmont in Nashville has succumbed to outside pressures to become more “liberal”.

    Slowrider,

Wake Forest is probably more closely aligned with doctrine than Baylor. Carson-Newman will be as long as Randall is president. Baylor should have made him president when they hired Sloan.

FWIW, I have had private meetings with a number of well known Baptist preachers about choosing a college for their children, none of whom you consider "scholars". Everyone of them were not happy with Baylor. I advised them to look at TCU. All of them chose TCU.

I was around for the attempted takeover of Baylor by conservatives, led by my pastor at the time. We had multiple conversations during which I told him I supported an independent board of regents. Little did I know how naive and corrupt that board would become.

Of course that failure led to the takeover of Southwestern Theological Seminary and the infamous "you got time for lunch".

As I mentioned in a post above, two other forces that I believe have affected the Baptist Church and entities connected to it (and I would personally think for the better) are the Charasmatic and non-denominational culture and movements.
I have no idea how this may or may not affect Baylor, academically, football or otherwise. From reading the obviously well-informed posts by Sabre, maybe not enough it seems, and I could be overestimating this.
And maybe they hired Rhule just for looks.

God forbid there be free thought at a University! Thinking rationally is so dangerous. Original ideas are like original sins, are they not?

I religiously constrained education is like a Jeep spinning its wheels in a mud hole. There is no progress of the individual.

But the checks were to Jimmy's players, which is the more salient point.
