Biggest since 1982 Virginia vs Chaminade?

Although, much as I hate to point this out, wasn't that a travel on the SFA player who picked up the loose ball and then rolled over to throw the pass?

That's twice in like 7-10 days that the #1 ranked team has been knocked off by a lower unranked program. Way to go JACKS!!

To me this upset was similar in college football to Appalachian State upsetting Michigan @ Ann Arbor a few years ago.

Hey, outside of a few years, SFA has been generally mediocre to poor in football, but for decades they have had very competitive / good Men's and Women's basketball teams.

2-3 years ago the Men's team made it to March Madness and won the first game! Forgot who it was against.

We're sitting in a pretty good (and often overlooked) basketball state.

Another team from Texas threatening to take down another #1

Not as big of an upset, but Tech leads #1 Louisville by 8 with ~5m left

Congrats to ttu. This is good for the B12 and our strength of schedule.

As much as I want to believe our record isn't a facade I have to ask. Do you believe strength of schedule will really matter at the end of the season? I don't

Well, I guess I'm being a cockeyed optimist. But if we were to somehow steal one of the games with ttu, and wind up going .500 in the B12 we will get into the NCAA. Purdue was a good win; and ttu would be considered a good win.

But your view is understandable, and I would agree with you more than half the time. Especially when I'm watching games, seeing the players unwilling/unable to attack the basket, score in the paint and settle for jumper after jumper which usually results in long stretches of NOT scoring.

The teams defense is ok, pretty good really.

But Shaka coaches offense like he thinks he's coaching Colby, Luca, and Steph Curry--guys who can create and make shots from anywhere. News flash: those guys are not on our team!

As much of a pessimist as I've been you are right they are playing better. The thing that sticks with me is that it seems like in every game, for at least a half, something completely falls apart like having 22 turnovers today. BUT, I don't think I've seen several things fall apart in the same game like last year which is much improvement to me.

I really hope this continues in conference play because if it does you might be right we could end up .500.

We play a bad Providence (5-5) and High Point then LSU (7-2) in the middle of conference play. If we go 2-1 or 3-0 in those three then 9-9 in conference that puts us (to me) at an unfathomable 21-11 or 22-10 this year. What?!?! You are right at that point we start jockeying for a better seed around 7 or 8 so SOS will play a role however playing an Alabama style non conference won't help much. But Purdue just crapped all over #5 Virgina last week beating them 69-40.

I feel so confused, but we're 10-1 and I hope this continues!!

^^^You said it better than me. Good post. I did not know Purdue beat VA. And I had lost sight of our current record which you pointed out is now 10-1! I was encouraged that the team went to the paint with K. Jones and Sims more last night. They also have Hamm, who could be really good down low. If Smart makes these kids play smarter (I know, fat chance) we could have a bit of a run in the NCAA.

Sounds like Virginia just crapped all over the court.

Is it just me or have there been an unusual amount of big upsets before the turn of the calendar year, compared to most college MBB seasons?

I don't remember a year like this where no one seems to want to be #1. I think the answer to why this is happening deserves it's own thread.

All you need to know about the state of Texas basketball under Shaka is that we are hoping to get to .500 in conference play with major doubts we will get there. The non-conference schedule has been trash for the most part and to me is not much of an indicator of improvement. If they shoot 45% from three they will be in those games. If not, they probably won’t. Improvement in team defense won’t mean much if you can’t rebound defensively.

I would say that this^^^is basically a good summation. And if the Horns get to .500 in conference, it will be a significant improvement over last year. Shaka is a decent recruiter, and a below average coach.
He seems to have no clue (or desire, not sure which) how to coach an offense that includes a smart, tough inside game to accompany setting up an open jumper from the arc.

Shaka must have read your post, because he just said Providence is a very tough team and their record doesn't indicate how good they are. He said to look at last years game against them as proof. WTF? No Shaka, you lost to Providence last year because you sucked.

Yep^^^. Last year at this point Shaka was regularly losing to teams he should have beaten: Radford, VCU, Providence. This year the team is winning those games--so far. Its early, we are 9-1. Last year we were 6-4 before our first B12 game.
We still have the same problems scoring down low, in the paint; but we are playing better defense, and shooting the "J" better. If shaka would have a brain transplant and suddenly know how to teach an inside/outside/inside motion offense to complement the three point shooters this team might go somewhere.
