Has anyone ever ordered a Greenberg Smoked Turkey? How are they? I think we're going to order our bird this year because, well, our oven sucks. So until we finish our kitchen remodel, we will have to rely on someone else's culinary talent. Any other suggestions for turkey (smoked or fried)? We've tried Rudy's before and it was good, but not great. Thanks. Edit: See my new post
I've gotten a couple as gifts. No complaints really. I'd say they're a reasonable buy from the little research I did after I got my first one about 8-9 years ago.
I had one once. There was nothing wrong with it, but it didn't live up to the billing of the person who touted it as being awesome or something like that. It was fine. It just wasn't awesome.
I went to school with Mike Greenberg, yes my family buys them and yes they are just average peppered smoked turkey.
i get one every year from a client every year i give it to the homeless shelter not that its bad, its just not going to be nearly as good as anything homemade in my house
You don't need a kitchen to fry a turkey - why not get a propane kit (sold @ Academy & other spots) & then do a test run or two on some chickens. Once you get the chickens down, move up to a full turkey for T+1-1? You'll be able to use the kit for all sorts of other stuff (boiling mudbugs, making a massive gumbo, etc) & if you have questions or need some add'l help, come back here & ask. That's how I'd do it, anyhow. Other option: spiral sliced ham (yes, I know - not a bird).
My grandparents-in-law introduced me to Greenberg turkey last year and I was floored.... thought it was absolutely incredible. Just my $0.02...
I have not eaten a Greenburg's smoked turkey but I did get a few of WalMarts smoked turkey breasts (bone-in) last year. They were incredible. I heated it in the oven at 400-450 until they were warm and the skin was crisp. My husband does not care for turkey that much and I could not keep him out of the leftovers.
My Mom has been getting them for Thanksgiving for years and years. We like them, but my wife is not so fond of them. Of course, she's a lawyer...
Okay, so we gave Greenberg a shot. It had a great smoked flavor but was a tad dry and a little too salty. I'd probably give it a 7/10 and would not order it again anytime soon. I will say, however, that the Greenberg folks were extremely friendly and helpful, and the leftovers made deeelicious smoked turkey and brie sandwiches. Thanks for all the feedback y'all.
My family (from Tyler) has always had a Greenberg on Thanksgiving since I can remember. In fact, this year we only had a Greenberg. The people who say they are overrated, are overrated.
The first time I had a Greenberg turkey about 10 years ago I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Delicious smoked flavor, moist. But the last few turkeys I've had have been really dry. I had one this Thanksgiving. They sent it to me about 10 days before T-day, so I had to freeze it. I was careful not to reheat it b/c I was concerned about drying it out further. Again I was disappointed this year. Maybe the turkeys we're ordering are too small.
Typically, a larger bird will not have as much flavor as a smaller one so I'm not so sure that's your issue. IIWY, I'd call them fine folks @ Greenberg & tell them.
