2021 Recruiting - Football

So your argument is that Texas would be better to be an NFL minor league Farm School? So let me ask you this, are you a UT alumnus and that did you graduated there from?

 

Would you rather have a 9 - 1 football team or a great University? Do you think Harvard or even Stanford is really that worried about their football record? And do you understand why they are not? Do you understand why Rick Perry could not change UT into a vocational trade school?

 

Methinks you would be better served on the Bio-Chemistry forum. On this forum people care about the win-loss record of the football team. Haven't seen too many posts extolling the 3.5 GPA of [fill in the blank]. If you want a championship team, you need to attract the players.

In a perfect world. Only happens once every fifteen years at Texas, on average, since the sixties. At least there have been no Reggie Bush scandals. It was tough in the Eighties losing to the best paid college football team in America, SMU. But they reaped as they sowed.

Funny I never hear any Mustangs brag about that National Championship and USC voided the 2006 Rose Bowl game because they were post game on probation that year and had to forfeit victories due to Mr. Bush's activities, so it never occurred!

I always hope, no matter what, Texas always plays it honorably straight. There is no pride in cheating the players nor the other teams.

 

I'm pretty sure you never played sports. I had very little talent, and it was hard for me to give up playing, even when my lack of talent was staring me in the face. Now try to talk about "real life" to someone that has been elite his whole life and is faced with giving it up. It's not easily done.

Besides, why are you talking about this in a recruiting thread. I think you reveal more about you and your dreams than I bet your willing to admit. Texas has been and should always be a pipeline to the NFL, you don't like it, it's your issue.

 

What does that have to do with the topic at hand? I have family that taught at Texas. I am a descendant of one of the original 300 that settled Texas with Stephan F Austin. I might not have gone to Texas but my family has done more to build this state than most, I think my opinion is pretty valid.

It doesn't matter if you don't want Texas to be a "NFL Farm System", they are and always will be.

That is Stanford, arguably the finest institution of higher learning in the country.

That is Stanford, the only P5 school that has NEVER flunked a football player out of school and brags about it.

That is Stanford, where the administration and alums freely admit that annual donations are directly proportionate to the number of football games won.

 

Yes and no. The player's academics has always come first. Maybe in the old days they got away with not going to classed and passing courses, but not these days. Texas certainly recruits players capable of being drafted into the NFL (or undrafted recently) and performing well. But that applies to only a few. You should peruse the majors of some of the roster players. Some of the ones with no NFL expectations are making the most of their opportunity and will be valuable contributors to society.

Congratulations on your family's rich history. I have ancestors who were on the Oregon trail and helped build the tabernacle in Salt Lake City. However I do not feel entitled to comment on football programs in either state. However I am a UT graduate so I do have some skin in the game. But I also know what UT 's main purpose is and I can assure you it is not to sponsor a NFL farm team.

 

That is the Stanford that few kids can qualify to attend. And the Stanford to which UT has lost some academically well qualified recruits, probably because the staff does not know the academics at UT as well as they should. Texas can compete well with other schools if the student chooses the right path.

I must admit I have always wondered how Stanford, Cal Berkeley, and a few of the other better academic schools kept their players eligible. The B1G schools are well known for their for their special football curricula. NWU is a very good university and not that easy to attend.

 

We already have a great university. You're delusional if you think great academics and football go together. Ask Harvard/Yale/Princeton why they don't dominate college football like they did 100 plus years ago. Similar to basketball players that can jump over everyone and dunk, no one is thinking to make themselves bigger stronger faster in football. It's athletic ability and practice to put that athletic ability to its best use. Not that there CANNOT be a smart, great athlete, but they don't usually go together. Notre Dame claims to make their players go to the same classes as regular students, but I doubt it. It's supposed to be this incredible university but just not buying the holier-than-thou (no pun intended) regarding classroom prowess. Texas isn't a football factory. It got very close when Vince and co were in town. After that, not so much. Your attitude is one that will keep Texas from more natty's and even conference championships. I think we're a little like ND in that it appears not many 5-stars want to come here and make a difference. We got one last year who transferred back, now another ONE is on the way. Clemson got 6 or some crazy number. I don't hear about Ohio State/LSU/Oklahoma/Clemson academics at all. But they're winning and they're going to keep winning. Not trying to emulate those schools (don't forget Bama) will keep us from ever being elite. RJ Young (OU podcaster) claims that's what gets OU fans' goats....that Texas fans just say that they're elite (see Michigan) and because they're loaded ($ not talent), and everyone throws respect/rankings their way. OU has won at least 11 games the last 5 years, finishing #1 in the Big 12 each year. And as soon as Texas gets a little bit of talent, OU, watch out. And all Stoops and Riley have done is win. So, keep lauding Baylor and TCU for doing more with less. Keep wanting to have programs like theirs. We'll get a 10 win season every once in a while. Change your perspective and become an NFL farm team, and you'll see what Texas $ can do. But I believe this university has so many Jerry Jones' that they get in the way of progress (winning). That was a lot of rant so I'll stop....for now...

Couple of points of interest for you:

1) Ivy League schools don't give athletic scholarships and don't care about football. but try to find a football player there that is paying tuition.

2) Even the service academies have a special block of appointments just for football. Tell me any of these have to meet the same requirements.

3) ND has a graduation rate equal to Rice, but Rice doesn't own a little business across town where the players have "privileges".

4) Find a graduate of Berzerkley that has sense enough to pour piss out of a boot, and I'll buy you lunch. Their football players may be the closest thing to normal on campus, but just check out the **** storm that Tedford left for Sonny to clean up.

 

And you would be wrong again.

 

1.) I think they give grants. The academics are first rate. What is your point?

2.) They still serve as officers when graduated and still have to pass the same core courses. What is your point?

3.) I have no knowledge of Rice other than it is a good college. I understand ND has similar difficulties finding athletes who can meet its entrance requirements. What is your point?

4.) I did not know that Berkeley issued boots for lavatories. Do you know any one who graduated there? I did not think so. The ones I have met are pretty bright whereas you are pretty dim based on these ill informed statements that have no point.

Your ignorance is proven manifestly. Please let the topic return to 2021 Texas recruiting now that you have faceplanted so many times.

I happy for you that you chose to get your degree from the University of Texas, but it doesn't validate your opinion any more than anyone else. This is like me saying I'm a vet and my opinion on the government is more valid than yours because I served my country (I didn't, but my dad did).

Now, if you had said, I give a lot of money to the program and I take an active part in its success, then you have real skins on the wall in how it's run. I would count your opinion of greater note than mine.

I think the academic reputation of the school is in no jeopardy so I'm pretty sure your diploma will be secure.

 

4) Does Steve Wozniak count?

 

So the scholarships are just shills? I bet you sell used cars too, right?

 

I wish that we had an NFL farm system going like we briefly had in the 2000s and other times. And that doesn't even have to assume a certain percentage of recruits being unsavory. But it is what it is for right now. I still say our 2021 recruiting class will be top 3 when we get all those great o-linemen.

 

If anyone thinks college football is just about W-L records and NFL picks, one might want to watch Chris Petersen's last game from about 8:58 on and listen to the tribute the announcers give him.

I've said this before: football doesn't last forever, but a good education will last and serve you well the rest of your life.

 

No one thinks differently.

 

Yes, we all know the value of an education, but some of the guys coming out of HS are looking to be a starter, do three and jump to the league, because they think they are that good and when that jump doesn't work out, they don't have a degree they can fall back on. Coaches, I believe, want them to stay for four and graduate, many perhaps most do, but there are some players who believe they know better than coaches.

 

No Doubt that is happening especially among higher ranked players. That is why they are so susceptible to a line of BS that a coach will feed them about how great they are and they have a clear path to the NFL. Avoiding those guys is key to building team chemistry and a winning tradition.

Bijan who has NFL abilities is not one of these guys. I think Texas has successfully avoided these deluded personality types in its 2020 class.

I think Milroe is just showing respect to a school that just offered him a 4 year ride. I don't think it means anything more than that. Polite gratitude, nothing more.
