Horns are down 24-13 midway through first half. Neither team looks very good. Horns back to their normal shooting pattern and 0ne on one offense.

I keep hearing that Shaka is a great recruiter. That may be true as a person, but I don't think he is a very good evaluator of talent. The more I watch this team, the more I come to the conclusion that it is not really a very talented team. Maybe athletic, but not basketball talented or skilled. Possibly it is due to a lack of coaching as the same players keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over again.

1 for 12 on the threes and down 43-28 at the half. The Friars are 7 for 14

Yep, this is what I alluded to on the Central Michigan thread. If we run into a team that plays man, or if our shooters can't hit the 3, we will lose. A lot.

When the jumpers aren't fallin, this team has NO Clue. No strategy. Zip zero.

Even the announcers said it: "Texas has no offensive strategy." Embarrassing. Not to mention painful to watch for UT fans.

I have only watched a portion of the Cal, A&M and Providence games this year, and I have no idea how anyone watches our team.

It is not even how good or bad they are in wins and losses, it is the complete lack of fundamentals, strategy, coaching, etc. that makes them so unwatchable. For everyone who does watch, God bless you.

^ Anyone that keeps up with it knows we have played a horrendously easy schedule and have now lost to two mediocre big east teams. Our ceiling in Big 12 play is likely 8-10 and our best case scenario is winning the NIT again. There is no reason for buzz.

Also, I truly do not understand why any recruit comes here. You'll lose a bunch of games in an empty arena and not get any better as a player. There has been a lot of smoke around whether Shaka's recruiting is on the up and up, and if it is not above board... that just makes the results even more sad.

Anyway, I miss having Texas basketball to look forward to and hope we hire a good coach again sooner than later.

I wish we could move on from Shaka. He has proven to be not only subpar as a coach, but just plain bad (there aren't enough negative adjectives to describe his lack of coaching). There has been zero improvement in any phase of the program under his watch and I am including recruiting as well. I was on the Forty acres for the Kaiser Bob years and this is just about as bad. I will be surprised if this team finishes higher than 7th in the conference.

Unfortunately, thanks to the administration just being stupid and giving money away we are locked into this crap for at least two more years. This is especially true give the precarious position that Herman has managed to place himself in. With the real prospect of having to fund a buyout and hire a new football coach at the end of next year (God I hope not) Shaka will just continue to do nothing and we will fall further and further behind. I don't see how he can turn it around. Shaka cannot out recruit his coaching. I wonder if Coleman ever reflects on what it would be like if he had gone to Duke instead.

    Ramey 2 A, 3 TO, 37 Min.
    Coleman 0 A, 3 TO, 34 Min.
    Baker 2 A, 1 TO 11, Min.
    Jones, K 2 A, 0 TO, 7 Min

    Pathetic

If we do NOT get rid of Shanka Ball, we can cancel the new arena and just play in a 1/3 full Gregory.

This game was hard to watch. Even under Barnes our offense was usually stagnant. Hopefully this was just one of those games where nothing goes right. Somebody needs to step up and be a consistent scorer.

Nope, this is who we are. We make 3's we possibly win. We miss 3's we definitely lose. The coach has no other offensive plans if they arent dropping. Relying on the long ball without a backup plan is a horrible strategy and this is what Shaka wants us to be. The last two years have proven that to be true.

It's hard for me to believe we pay this much to Shaka for a "strategy" I could and would be willing to implement for free just to say I am the Texas Longhorns coach. The saving grace to keep us from winning less than 10 games a year is recruiting/talent. Shaka does a good job getting them here, but these stud athletes are being let down in my opinion.

    Think about these final stats:

5 assists - most middle school teams will get 5 assists in a game by accident having a basic offense. This is what happens when your offense isn't designed to "create" shots. They just try to dribble around and take an open shot. After 11 games with a 9-2 start we are 144th nationally in assists per game and #202 in actual assists.. Shaka should be fired on that result alone. I have no idea why any true point guard would want to play here, but wait it gets better. :rolleyes1:

2 steals - where is the defensive genius assistant Shaka hired to coach this team? That's zero defensive effort. The CMU game was a head scratcher to me because we had the best offensive game of the year shooting over 50% but were still losing with 8 minutes left. We are ranked 218th nationally in steals per game! Hows that possible? Bad defense. Where again is that defensive specialist coach?

9 offensive rebounds and being out rebounded by 13 - that means the ball goes in the air and one maybe two guys are even trying to get the ball. That's either lazy or bad priorities given to them by the coach. I thought the lack of assists were bad until I looked up our rebounding stats. We are ranked 288th out of 353 teams in total rebounding per game. :puke: Again, where is our new defensive coach?

We were favored by 1.5 pts, lost by 22 and I dont think it was really that close. I love basketball, but I can't watch this crap anymore. Someone mentioned the Big XII is down this year, but will it really matter? I hope DelConte is looking at more details than the record 'cause it's about to get ugly.

Just when things looked like things were getting better, Shaka has the most pathetic coaching performance in his Texas career.

I think this says it all:

Asked if he was bothered by Saturday’s outcome, Ramey said no.

Hell I was bothered. I bet our practices are just 5 on 5 for the entire session with the coaches cheering an occasional dunks while drinking a beer.

The only decent team of the Shanka era was the first when he inherited a Barnes trained point guard. We have not had one since. Coleman has an occasional point guard game. We win those. He and 0 (zero) assists yesterday. I could not even watch the second half of that **** show yesterday.
I think we should start a Go Fund me account to buy out Shanka's contract.

Please. If you want to be critical of Shaka, go ahead. He has given us plenty of ammunition. But Kaiser Bob fielded far and away the worst UT basketball teams in my lifetime, and Shaka isn't even close to that level of pathetic.

If we had just missed a bunch of 3s while Providence made them, that would have been one thing. But seemingly every time I switched to the game, Watson or somebody else was getting an easy dunk at the rim, usually from offensive rebounds or backdoor cuts.

And that's about the most disheartening of all. No competitive fire. I get pissed when my semi-competitive softball team loses.

Yes, that's addressed in my 3rd point mentioning we are ranked 288th in the NCAA in rebounds per game and my general "where is the defensive specialist assistant coach we hired". The whole package is pathetic propped up by a 9-2 start against a terrible schedule. You'll hear a bunch of surprise and wonder at what happened when we end the season near .500. The clues are in the stats already.

@Vol Horn 4 Life The stats you mention are why we are so unwatchable. It is not the winning or losing, it is that regardless of whether we win or lose we play atrocious basketball lacking any strategy or fundamentals. It is more or less street ball where we just throw up 3s. Like you said, we pay Shaka a ridiculous amount of money for this. He makes more than Barnes ever made here by a good margin. Who gives a basketball coach a 7 year contract and extends it to an 8 year for 20 win season and getting bounced in the first round? (see what we fired Barnes over the year before).

The amazing thing is Barnes was fired for not winning enough and the fans wanted someone to take us to the next level. Instead, we more or less no longer have a basketball program at our school. The sport is dead here until Shaka is gone.

People got into with me on this board because I was tooth and nail against firing Barnes. I mean I get being for firing if we had actually gone out and hired an upgrade. However, following the Charlie Strong debacle, this disaster was completely predictable and wanting to dump Barnes was totally the wrong call. Barnes went to a worse program and it has now completely surpassed Texas. Anyway, we are where we are now. Hopefully we can move on from Shaka sooner than later.

Patterson had some kind of progressive (and I'm not talking politics) ideas that led him to Strong and Smart....and a few other bad ideas.
Time to get back to some Texas values and reboot. Shaka doesn't fit the bill...and certainly doesnt earn the bill we pay for him. Hit reset...find a real, good, old-school basketballer who can coach.
In the meantime, guess we can enjoy our NIT banner.

I have been following Longhorns basketball ball for 55 years (all the way back to the end of the Harold Bradley Era). We've had successful tenures and terrible ones, but even the darkest Weltlich Years were not as unwatchable as Shaka's teams.

Really? We couldn't beat teams like Rice, or like SMU under Weltlich, and this was back in an era when the ONLY SWC teams worth two squirts of piss were Arkansas and UH. Weltlich's teams were extremely poorly coached, but had the additional feature of having untalented players to boot. Weltlich had to have open tryouts just to find warm bodies, for God's sake.

If you find Shaka's teams more unwatchable than that, I suggest you get your vision checked.

I thought Penders inherited Mays and Wright from Bob.

Think of the similarities, Fired Abe Lemons and brought in Weltich. Fired Barnes and brought in Smart.

I believe this debate should tell it all when you are comparing the two and trying to decide which was worse.

Personalty, I think Smart is worse but I see your point.

Sadly I think Shaka is priced in to being coach for at least one more season after this regardless of how this year ends. It is hard to see this team winning 9 conference games but even if they do or if somehow they win 8 and that is enough they will be eeking into the tournament as a 10-11-play in type seed and will almost certainly be another first round and done team. Texas just totally whiffed on Smart and is going to have to live with that until the price is right to move on.
