The problem with Joyner is she plays out of control all too often. She's not a 5'6" G!!

I also blame Karen for not managing the post position. She lost both Ashley and Sedona. With those 2 still on the team Karen could bench Joyner for some attitude adjustment; learning. She's now in a position where she has to play Joyner regardless of attitude or failure to learn issues, or both.

Speaking of transfers/recruiting, I wonder how often it’s not a good fit with the coach/program vs not a good fit with classes/professors/University? Lots of factors come into play especially when dealing with 18/19/20 years old.

I have what may be a silly question. Somebody put a red X and disagreed with WCCBBNUT when he said "Nice road win. Way to go Horns."

Does that mean that that person disagrees with the FACT that it was a nice win? Or does it mean that they just disagree with someone posting such a statement?

Just can't see why anyone would disagree with such even if they're not a Horn fan.

Ha ha. There is a certain poster on here who thinks that the program deserves zero praise until we beat Baylor. The red X or more recently the sh*t emoji makes me laugh at the immaturity. You’ll notice the red x or the poop next to most of my posts all from the same person. It’s pretty funny :lmao:

I often hit the red "X" or "thumbs down" accidentally and then have to correct it.

How did Coach Aston "lose" Ashley? I, for one, have no idea what happened so I have no idea what Coach Aston could or should have done differently.

Sedona Prince has repeatedly claimed that she left Texas due to disagreements over her medical treatment. I am fairly certain that was not under Coach Aston's control.

Finally, the transfer situation is hitting most schools and coaches at programs high and low are struggling to manage their rosters. Muffet McGraw at Notre Name subscribed to the small roster philosophy in part because she did not want to 'recruit over' players and wanted all players to have the opportunity to play meaningful minutes. Now a combination of transfers, injuries, and players leaving early for the WNBA has left Notre Dame barely able to field five to seven scholarship players. National champions two years ago, the Fighting Irish have a losing season record right now. McGraw now plans to try to fill all fifteen scholarships understanding that means some players (perhaps highly ranked recruits) will sit on the bench. That may lead to more transfers.

I hope Joyner does "blow up" in the WNBA and have a great career. If so, I will be surprised if her success is as quick as was Ariel's. And I may not draw the same conclusions as others. I may think it just took Joyner a little longer to grow up. No judgement from me. I do not care to tell you how long it took me to grow up.

I have many posts on multiple message boards pointing to Ariel's WNBA success as evidence that Aston does not develop players. My opinion is that a coach does not "develop" a player between a draft day in April and a regular season that begins in May. The fact that Ariel had a great rookie season tells me she was well prepared. Also, Ariel's stats at Texas showed improvement year over year, another sign of a player developing her game. I think it may be more fair to say Aston did not fully utilize Atkins in the offense, which I think is different from not developing Ariel. Also, Atkins does not necessarily like to focus so much on scoring. She has written about that. Coach T at Washington has had to strongly encourage Ariel to take more shots. Ariel seems really happy playing great defense and feeding Della Donne. For greater team success, I agree that Coach Aston should have made Ariel more of a focus of the offense, particularly as a senior.

Ariel already was a great defender and had an outstanding motor and mentality when she left Texas, two qualities that tend to separate who does well and who rides the pine in the W.

Joyner is neither a strong defender nor does she have particularly good work ethic and mentality in the game. I'm sure she'll be drafted, but I'll be very surprised if she gets much playing time -- if she can even make a roster.

How can you say that a college athlete doesn’t have work ethic?

I think it’s system/ personnel. IMO coach Aston’s offensive system isn’t very good which isn’t the case for Washington. Also the spacing in the WNBA is much better than college because of the longer 3 point line and also the fact that Washington is such a good 3 point shooting team. All 5 players on the court for Washington can usually make the 3 point shot consistently.

I don't even know how to answer this question.

Surely you can recognize that not all players have the same "motor" and effort level. Some are better in this area than others. Ariel is superb in this area. Joyner is more in the mediocre range.

I thought Ariel needed to be the go to player of the team during her junior and senior season. She was the most proficient shooter and scorer from anywhere on the court and she was misused by Coach Aston. Ariel needed to be that go to player averaging 18-20 pts per game for our women's basketball program.

It's all in Joyner's own head. It's not the coaches, except to the extent they have never figured out how to reach her and motivate her consistently.

I have seen projected drafts where Holmes goes 9-15. We’ll see. Her size and still unrealized potential apparently still being valued by the pros. The pro game is lights out different. I have no idea how her game will translate. However in my fair and biased opinion, that slot is too high.

Based on athleticism alone I think it’s a correct projection; based on production and results, she’s not a pro. I think it’d take her a few seasons in the pros to see any kind of significant playing time, and with her attitude I don’t see her sticking around to ride the bench that long. Hope I’m wrong, just my opinion.

Oh......I think she is a pro. Just not that high in draft. I think she will make a WBNA roster and will play some. And will play in Europe and play some. Would be nice to see her as an impact player someday and somewhere. She will be given the opportunity. I would rather root for her than having to root for Cox in Dallas Wings uniform. Draft projections have Cox at number 2 to Wings. I have some tough choices to make.

She’s a post who barely shoots 40% and turns the ball over way too much. She’s too inconsistent. She will get drafted and ‘be a pro’ but she won’t go far. Again, just my opinion.

She’s a post that leads the team in SCORING, is second on the team in STEALS, second on the team in ASSISTS, and second on the team in BLOCKS. Again, some of you are talking crazy.

None of those are ‘pro’ numbers, though. Again, just my opinion. If she was consistent, I would agree she is a pro; but the past four years have taught me that you can never rely on her to show up. Pro teams are not gonna give her the playing time we are forced to when she starts throwing the ball away and missing bunnies. I’m not questioning her talent at all.

I'm thinking maybe she'll come into her own after going overseas to play. She definitely has some skills and athleticism that would translate well at the next level. IMO it will depend mostly on whether or not she wants it bad enough to put in the time and work.

To me it’s about Holmes finding a team with the “right fit”. I was reading about the NBA and someone said that the stars will be stars on any team. But for all the rest, it’s all about finding the right fit. That’s all about the surrounding players, the playing style, the opportunity, the management, the coaching and other important things. That’s why you will find a few role players changing teams and suddenly having success. Players like Brandon Ingram at New Orleans and i “think” Wiggins going to Golden State are examples. Playing with Curry, Thompson, Green and coached by Kerr will allow a disappointing Wiggins to flourish......I hypothesize. Holmes needs to find that “fit” for her and embrace it in order to do well. The trial will be starting this summer and we’ll all follow to see the verdict. The verdict could take several years though. Lots of time for all to reassess what our opinions are now. I value every opinion.
